TL;DR: In this article, the effect of anticorrosion additive in biodiesel (from palm oil) on diesel engines, performance, emissions and wear characteristics was evaluated and the results of this investigation will be used to find compatible lubricant for biodiesel engine.
Abstract: If the agricultural products market is limited and much of agricultural land is not utilized as is the case in many countries in the world at present, then agriculture should be directed to the production of new alternative products. The land can be used to produce non-food products including biodiesels for the domestic energy market to diminish imports. Much research has been done on biodiesels over the last 20 yr after the oil crisis in 1973. At present, concern about environmental regulations has been the major reason to look for alternative fuel. A significant level in terms of physico-chemical properties of biodiesel has been obtained but there is a lack of full or partial replacement of fossil fuel that needs to be discussed. This paper presents the experimental results carried out to evaluate the effect of anticorrosion additive in biodiesel (from palm oil) on diesel engines, performance, emissions and wear characteristics. This biodiesel is defined as the methyl ester of palm oil also known as palm oil diesel. The results of this investigation will be used to find compatible lubricant for biodiesel engine.

TL;DR: In 1998, an outbreak of acute encephalitis with high mortality rates among pig handlers in Malaysia led to the discovery of a novel paramyxovirus named Nipah virus as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In 1998, an outbreak of acute encephalitis with high mortality rates among pig handlers in Malaysia led to the discovery of a novel paramyxovirus named Nipah virus. A multidisciplinary investigation that included epidemiology, microbiology, molecular biology, and pathology was pivotal in the discovery of this new human infection. Clinical and autopsy findings were derived from a series of 32 fatal human cases of Nipah virus infection. Diagnosis was established in all cases by a combination of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and serology. Routine histological stains, IHC, and electron microscopy were used to examine autopsy tissues. The main histopathological findings included a systemic vasculitis with extensive thrombosis and parenchymal necrosis, particularly in the central nervous system. Endothelial cell damage, necrosis, and syncytial giant cell formation were seen in affected vessels. Characteristic viral inclusions were seen by light and electron microscopy. IHC analysis showed widespread presence of Nipah virus antigens in endothelial and smooth muscle cells of blood vessels. Abundant viral antigens were also seen in various parenchymal cells, particularly in neurons. Infection of endothelial cells and neurons as well as vasculitis and thrombosis seem to be critical to the pathogenesis of this new human disease.

TL;DR: It is concluded that a unique relapsing and remitting encephalitis or late‐onsetEncephalitis may result as a complication of persistent Nipah virus infection in the central nervous system.
Abstract: An outbreak of infection with the Nipah virus, a novel paramyxovirus, occurred among pig farmers between September 1998 and June 1999 in Malaysia, involving 265 patients with 105 fatalities. This is a follow-up study 24 months after the outbreak. Twelve survivors (7.5%) of acute encephalitis had recurrent neurological disease (relapsed encephalitis). Of those who initially had acute nonencephalitic or asymptomatic infection, 10 patients (3.4%) had late-onset encephalitis. The mean interval between the first neurological episode and the time of initial infection was 8.4 months. Three patients had a second neurological episode. The onset of the relapsed or late-onset encephalitis was usually acute. Common clinical features were fever, headache, seizures, and focal neurological signs. Four of the 22 relapsed and late-onset encephalitis patients (18%) died. Magnetic resonance imaging typically showed patchy areas of confluent cortical lesions. Serial single-photon emission computed tomography showed the evolution of focal hyperperfusion to hypoperfusion in the corresponding areas. Necropsy of 2 patients showed changes of focal encephalitis with positive immunolocalization for Nipah virus antigens but no evidence of perivenous demyelination. We concluded that a unique relapsing and remitting encephalitis or late-onset encephalitis may result as a complication of persistent Nipah virus infection in the central nervous system.

TL;DR: The potential of developing strain G10 for the biological control of Fusarium wilt disease of banana is suggested, which shows in vitro antagonistic effects against F.sp.
Abstract: f.sp. cubense is the causal pathogen of wilt disease of banana. A cost-effective measure of control for this disease is still not available. Streptomyces violaceusniger strain G10 acts as an antifungal agent antagonistic towards many different phytopathogenic fungi, including different pathogenic races of the Fusarium wilt pathogen. In an attempt to understand the mode of action of this antagonist in nature, the interaction between S. violaceusniger strain G10 and F. oxysporum f.sp. cubense was first studied by paired incubation on agar plates. Evidence for the in vitro antibiosis of strain G10 was demonstrated by inhibition zones in the “cross-plug” assay plates. Microscopic observations showed lysis of hyphal ends in the inhibited fungal colonies. Culture of strain G10 in liquid media produces antifungal metabolites, which showed in vitro antagonistic effects against F. oxysporum f.sp. cubense such as swelling, distortion and excessive branching of hyphae, and inhibition of spore germination. An indirect method was used to show that antibiosis is one of the mechanisms of antagonism by which strain G10 acts against F. oxysporun f.sp. cubense in soil. This study suggests the potential of developing strain G10 for the biological control of Fusarium wilt disease of banana. TL;DR: It is now recognized that the contribution of dietary fats to blood lipids and cholesterol modulation is a consequence of the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the fats.
Abstract: Palm oil is an excellent choice for food manufacturers because of its nutritional benefits and versatility. The oil is highly structured to contain predominantly oleic acid at the sn2-position in the major triacylglycerols to account for the beneficial effects described in numerous nutritional studies. Oil quality and nutritional benefits have been assured for the variety of foods that can be manufactured from the oil directly or from blends with other oils while remaining trans-free. The oxidative stability coupled with the cost-effectiveness is unparalleled among cholesterol-free oils, and these values can be extended to blends of polyunsaturated oils to provide long shelf-life. Presently the supply of genetic-modification-free palm oil is assured at economic prices, since the oil palm is a perennial crop with unparalleled productivity. Numerous studies have confirmed the nutritional value of palm oil as a result of the high monounsaturation at the crucial 2-position of the oil's triacylglycerols, making the oil as healthful as olive oil. It is now recognized that the contribution of dietary fats to blood lipids and cholesterol modulation is a consequence of the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of the fats. Lipolytic hydrolysis of palm oil glycerides containing predominantly oleic acid at the 2 position and palmitic and stearic acids at the 1 and 3 positions allows for the ready absorption of the 2-monoacrylglycerols while the saturated free fatty acids remain poorly absorbed. Dietary palm oil in balanced diets generally reduced blood cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides while raising the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Improved lipoprotein(a) and apo-A1 levels were also demonstrated from palm oil diets; an important benefits also comes from the lowering of blood triglycerides (or reduced fat storage) as compared with those from polyunsaturated fat diets. Virgin palm oil also provides carotenes apart from tocotrienols and tocopherols that have been shown to be powerful antioxidants and potential mediators of cellular functions. These compounds can be antithrombotic, cause an increase of the prostacyclin/thromboxane ratio, reduce restenosis, and inhibit HMG-CoA-reductase (thus reducing) cholesterol biosynthesis). Red palm oil is a rich source of beta-carotene as well as of alpha-tocopherol and tocotrienols.

TL;DR: Malaysia has blindness and visual impairment rates that are comparable with other countries in the South East Asia region, however, cataract and uncorrected refractive errors are still the leading causes of blindness, suggesting the need for an evaluation on accessibility and availability of eye care services and barriers to eye care utilisation in the country.
Abstract: Background: A national eye survey was conducted in 1996 to determine the prevalence of blindness and low vision and their major causes among the Malaysian population of all ages. Methods: A stratified two stage cluster sampling design was used to randomly select primary and secondary sampling units. Interviews, visual acuity tests, and eye examinations on all individuals in the sampled households were performed. Estimates were weighted by factors adjusting for selection probability, non-response, and sampling coverage. Results: The overall response rate was 69% (that is, living quarters response rate was 72.8% and household response rate was 95.1%). The age adjusted prevalence of bilateral blindness and low vision was 0.29% (95% CI 0.19 to 0.39%), and 2.44% (95% CI 2.18 to 2.69%) respectively. Females had a higher age adjusted prevalence of low vision compared to males. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of bilateral low vision and blindness among the four ethnic groups, and urban and rural residents. Cataract was the leading cause of blindness (39%) followed by retinal diseases (24%). Uncorrected refractive errors (48%) and cataract (36%) were the major causes of low vision. Conclusion: Malaysia has blindness and visual impairment rates that are comparable with other countries in the South East Asia region. However, cataract and uncorrected refractive errors, though readily treatable, are still the leading causes of blindness, suggesting the need for an evaluation on accessibility and availability of eye care services and barriers to eye care utilisation in the country.

TL;DR: It is shown that the NiV and HeV glycoproteins are capable of highly efficient heterotypic functional activity with each other and may provide new insights into paramyxovirus membrane fusion mechanisms.
Abstract: Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV) are novel paramyxoviruses from pigs and horses, respectively, that are responsible for fatal zoonotic infections of humans. The unique genetic and biological characteristics of these emerging agents has led to their classification as the prototypic members of a new genus within the Paramyxovirinae subfamily called HENIPAVIRUS: These viruses are most closely related to members of the genus Morbillivirus and infect cells through a pH-independent membrane fusion event mediated by the actions of their attachment (G) and fusion (F) glycoproteins. Understanding their cell biological features and exploring the functional characteristics of the NiV and HeV glycoproteins will help define important properties of these emerging viruses and may provide new insights into paramyxovirus membrane fusion mechanisms. Using a recombinant vaccinia virus system and a quantitative assay for fusion, we demonstrate NiV glycoprotein function and the same pattern of cellular tropism recently reported for HeV-mediated fusion, suggesting that NiV likely uses the same cellular receptor for infection. Fusion specificity was verified by inhibition with a specific antiserum or peptides derived from the alpha-helical heptads of NiV or HeV F. Like that of HeV, NiV-mediated fusion also requires both F and G. Finally, interactions between the glycoproteins of the paramyxoviruses have not been well defined, but here we show that the NiV and HeV glycoproteins are capable of highly efficient heterotypic functional activity with each other. However, no heterotypic activity was observed with envelope glycoproteins of the morbilliviruses Measles virus and Canine distemper virus.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a drought driven by the severe 1997-1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation event led to a reduction in the availability of flowering and fruiting forest trees for foraging by fruitbats and culminated in unprecedented encroachment of fruitbats into cultivated fruit orchards in 1997/1998.
Abstract: In late 1998, a novel paramyxovirus named Nipah virus, emerged in Malaysia, causing fatal disease in domestic pigs and humans with substantial economic loss to the local pig industry. Pteropid fruitbats have since been identified as a natural reservoir host. Over the last two decades, the forest habitat of these bats in Southeast Asia has been substantially reduced by deforestation for pulpwood and industrial plantation. In 1997/1998, slash-and-burn deforestation resulted in the formation of a severe haze that blanketed much of Southeast Asia in the months directly preceding the Nipah virus disease outbreak. This was exacerbated by a drought driven by the severe 1997-1998 El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. We present data suggesting that this series of events led to a reduction in the availability of flowering and fruiting forest trees for foraging by fruitbats and culminated in unprecedented encroachment of fruitbats into cultivated fruit orchards in 1997/1998. These anthropogenic events, coupled with the location of piggeries in orchards and the design of pigsties allowed transmission of a novel paramyxovirus from its reservoir host to the domestic pig and ultimately to the human population.

TL;DR: The 1998 outbreak of severe febrile encephalitis among pig farmers in Malaysia caused by a newly emergent paramyxovirus, Nipah virus, is a good example as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Emerging infectious diseases involving zoonosis have become important global health problems. The 1998 outbreak of severe febrile encephalitis among pig farmers in Malaysia caused by a newly emergent paramyxovirus, Nipah virus, is a good example. This disease has the potential to spread to other countries through infected animals and can cause considerable economic loss. The clinical presentation includes segmental myoclonus, areflexia, hypertension, and tachycardia, and histologic evidence includes endothelial damage and vasculitis of the brain and other major organs. Magnetic resonance imaging has demonstrated the presence of discrete high-signal-intensity lesions disseminated throughout the brain. Nipah virus causes syncytial formation in Vero cells and is antigenically related to Hendra virus. The Island flying fox (Pteropus hypomelanus; the fruit bat) is a likely reservoir of this virus. The outbreak in Malaysia was controlled through the culling of >1 million pigs.

TL;DR: In this paper, social representations of history and historical leaders tended to be hegemonic or consensual, showing low levels of conflict across ethnicity and nationality, even regarding the separation of these two nations.
Abstract: Social representations of history were investigated using surveys among university populations of ethnic Malays, Chinese, and Indians in Singapore and Malaysia. Representations of history and historical leaders tended to be hegemonic or consensual, showing low levels of conflict across ethnicity and nationality, even regarding the separation of these two nations. Tendencies towards in-group favoritism and ontogeny were slight, but statistically significant on some measures. National and ethnic identity were positively correlated, with ethnic identity stronger than national identity in Malaysia, and strongest among Malays in Malaysia. National identity was strongest among Chinese in Malaysia, followed by Chinese in Singapore. Results of regression analyses on national identity suggest that ethnicity is more sensitive in Malaysia than in Singapore. Results are interpreted through the frameworks provided by social representations theory and social identity theory. It is argued that hegemonic representations of history are associated with positive correlations between national and ethnic identity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the bicontinuous cubic phase has been shown to have a high importance for cell fusion, transportation processes and drug delivery, and also has a high potential to form chiral nanostructures, e.g. nanotubes, fibers, gels, biconuous and discontinuous cubic phases, and lyotropic and thermotropic cholesteric phases.
Abstract: Glycolipids have important biological functions in nature: as membrane formation, mediators of cell–cell-recognitions and various specialized functions. Thousands of very complex glycoconjugates have been described by the biochemistry research, whereas the liquid crystal research in the previous decades only recognizes the structure/property relationships of more simple alkylated sugars, e.g. most of the natural materials have never been tested for their mesomorphous properties and the relation between the physical state of matter and the biological functions. This is the challenge of the present research. The bicontinuous cubic phase seems to have a high importance for cell fusion, transportation processes and drug delivery. Glycolipids also have a high potential to form chiral nanostructures, e.g. nanotubes, fibers, gels, bicontinuous and discontinuous cubic phases, and lyotropic and thermotropic cholesteric phases, etc.

TL;DR: If there was a seasonal variation in Malaysia in the incidence of RSV infection in young children admitted with LRTI, and possible associations with local meteorological parameters, is determined.
Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most important cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in young children We determined if there was a seasonal variation in Malaysia in the incidence of RSV infection in young children admitted with LRTI, and possible associations of RSV infection with local meteorological parameters A total of 5,691 children, aged less than 24 months and hospitalized with LRTI (ie, bronchiolitis and pneumonia) between 1982-1997, were included in this study Nasopharyngeal samples were collected and examined for RSV by immunofluorescence, viral culture, or both Seasonal variations were determined by analyzing the monthly RSV-positive isolation rate via time series analysis Possible correlations with local meteorological parameters were also evaluatedRSV was isolated in 1,047 (184%) children Seasonal variations in RSV infection rate were evident and peaked during the months of November, December, and January (test statistics [T] = 537, P < 0001) This seasonal variation was evident for both bronchiolitis and pneumonia categories (T = 428 and 569, respectively, P < 0001) The rate of RSV infection appeared to correlate with the monthly number of rain days (r = 026, P < 001), and inversely with the monthly mean temperature (r = -038, P < 0001) In the tropics, seasonal variations in the incidence of RSV infection are evident, with an annual peak in November, December, and January This information provides a guide for healthcare provisions and implementation of RSV prevention

TL;DR: Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed that the clinical isolates of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden remained drug sensitive but that the vegetable isolates were resistant to at least two antibiotics.
Abstract: The incidence of food-borne salmonellosis due to Salmonella enterica serotype Weltevreden is reported to be on the increase in Malaysia. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) subtyping method was used to assess the extent of genetic diversity and clonality of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden strains from humans and the environment. PFGE of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA from 95 strains of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden gave 39 distinct profiles with a wide range of Dice coefficients (0.27 to 1.00), indicating that PFGE is very discriminative and that multiple clones of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden exist among clinical and environmental isolates. Strains of one dominant pulsotype (pulsotype X1/X2) appeared to be endemic in this region, as they were consistently recovered from humans with salmonellosis between 1996 and 2001 and from raw vegetables. In addition, the sharing of similar PFGE profiles among isolates from humans, vegetables, and beef provides indirect evidence of the possible transmission of salmonellosis from contaminated raw vegetables and meat to humans. Furthermore, the recurrence of PFGE profile X21 among isolates found in samples of vegetables from one wet market indicated the persistence of this clone. The environment in the wet markets may represent a major source of cross-contamination of vegetables with Salmonella serotype Weltevreden. Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed that the clinical isolates of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden remained drug sensitive but that the vegetable isolates were resistant to at least two antibiotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to compare clinical and environmental isolates of Salmonella serotype Weltevreden in Malaysia.

Abstract: Seven cadmium(II) arenedisulfonate compounds, namely [Cd(2,2'-bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(peds)].4H(2)O (1), [Cd(2)(2,2'-bpy)(4)(H(2)O)(2)(1,5nds)](1,5nds).4H(2)O (2), [Cd(cyclam)(1,5nds)](2) (3), ([Cd(inia)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(2,6nds)].4H(2)O)(n)(4), ([Cd(inia)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(bpds)].4H(2)O)(n)(5), ([Cd(2)(inia)(4)(H(2)O)(3)(peds)(2)].2H(2)O)(n)(6), and [Cd(1,5nds)(H(2)O)(2)](n) (7), where 2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, inia = isonicotinamide, nds = naphthalenedisulfonate, bpds = 4,4'-biphenyldisulfonate, and peds = 4,4'-phenyletherdisulfonate, have been obtained from aqueous solution by using similar procedures and structurally characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. In 1, the peds anion coordinates as a monodentate ligand, leading to a mononuclear unit. In 2 and 3, the 1,5nds anions coordinate as mu(2)-bridging ligands in different modes, producing charged or neutral dinuclear clusters. In 4 and 5, 2,6nds and bpds behave as mu(2)-spacers, resulting in 1-dimensional polymers. While in 6, the peds acts both as terminal and bridging ligands with the SO(3)(-) groups being either monodentate or mu(2)-bridging, creating a knotted 1-dimensional polymer with dinuclear clusters as the repeating units. In 7, 1,5nds acts as a bridging ligand with each SO(3)(-) coordinated as a mu(2)-bridging group to adjacent Cd(II) centers, leading to a 2-dimensional polymer. Together with the reported ([Cu(en)(2)(1,5nds)].2H(2)O)(n) (8), all of the six possible coordination modes adopted by organodisulfonate anions, on the assumption that each SO(3)(-) group could be monodentate or mu(2)-bridging, are realized by introducing nitrogen-containing organic ligands as auxiliaries.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impacts of climate change on the Chalk aquifer in west Norfolk and found that the most noticeable and consistent result of the climate change impact simulations is the decrease in recharge expected in autumn for all scenarios.
Abstract: Abstract This study investigated the impacts of climate change on the Chalk aquifer in west Norfolk. A two-layer transient groundwater flow model of the aquifer system was calibrated and validated for the period 1980–1995 and provided the historic flow record for the climate change simulations. Two future scenarios were selected from the Hadley Centre’s climate change experiments using HadCM2: (1) a medium-high (MH) emissions scenario; and (2) a medium-low (ML) emissions scenario of ‘greenhouse’ gases. Two future periods were considered: 2020–2035 and 2050–2065. Future recharge to the aquifer was estimated by adjusting the historic record of monthly precipitation and potential evapotranspiration by factors calculated from comparing control and future HadCM2-generated values. Impacts of climate change were evaluated by incorporating the monthly estimated recharge inputs within the flow model. The most noticeable and consistent result of the climate change impact simulations is the decrease in recharge expected in autumn for all scenarios (decreases ranging from 17 to 35%) as a consequence of the smaller amount of summer precipitation and increased autumn potential evapotranspiration. For the 2050MH scenario, these conditions lead to a 42 0ncrease in autumn soil moisture deficit and a 26% reduction in recharge. Hence, west Norfolk can expect longer and drier summers that are predicted to have relatively little effect on summer groundwater levels (generally a 1 to 2 0ecrease) but will result in a decrease of up to 14 0n autumn river baseflow volumes.

Abstract: In this review, tuberculosis of the genital tract was diagnosed retrospectively in 11 females over 15 years. The presentations of nine cases are described. Seven of the nine cases presented with ascites, vague abdominal distension, weight loss and were misdiagnosed as ovarian carcinoma. Eight women had no relevant past history. A review on clinical presentations and diagnosis of pelvic tuberculosis is presented. We conclude that although the incidence of tuberculosis is uncommon in developed countries, its prevalence appears to be increasing worldwide. Therefore, clinicians should consider tuberculosis as a differential diagnosis when encountering clinical presentations of pelvic mass and ascites.
