Abstract: Importance Clinical trials assessing the efficacy of IL-6 antagonists in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 have variously reported benefit, no effect, and harm. Objective To estimate the association between administration of IL-6 antagonists compared with usual care or placebo and 28-day all-cause mortality and other outcomes. Data Sources Trials were identified through systematic searches of electronic databases between October 2020 and January 2021. Searches were not restricted by trial status or language. Additional trials were identified through contact with experts. Study Selection Eligible trials randomly assigned patients hospitalized for COVID-19 to a group in whom IL-6 antagonists were administered and to a group in whom neither IL-6 antagonists nor any other immunomodulators except corticosteroids were administered. Among 72 potentially eligible trials, 27 (37.5%) met study selection criteria. Data Extraction and Synthesis In this prospective meta-analysis, risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Inconsistency among trial results was assessed using theI2statistic. The primary analysis was an inverse variance–weighted fixed-effects meta-analysis of odds ratios (ORs) for 28-day all-cause mortality. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome measure was all-cause mortality at 28 days after randomization. There were 9 secondary outcomes including progression to invasive mechanical ventilation or death and risk of secondary infection by 28 days. Results A total of 10 930 patients (median age, 61 years [range of medians, 52-68 years]; 3560 [33%] were women) participating in 27 trials were included. By 28 days, there were 1407 deaths among 6449 patients randomized to IL-6 antagonists and 1158 deaths among 4481 patients randomized to usual care or placebo (summary OR, 0.86 [95% CI, 0.79-0.95];P = .003 based on a fixed-effects meta-analysis). This corresponds to an absolute mortality risk of 22% for IL-6 antagonists compared with an assumed mortality risk of 25% for usual care or placebo. The corresponding summary ORs were 0.83 (95% CI, 0.74-0.92;P Conclusions and Relevance In this prospective meta-analysis of clinical trials of patients hospitalized for COVID-19, administration of IL-6 antagonists, compared with usual care or placebo, was associated with lower 28-day all-cause mortality. Abstract: Prostate cancer is a highly heritable disease with large disparities in incidence rates across ancestry populations. We conducted a multiancestry meta-analysis of prostate cancer genome-wide association studies (107,247 cases and 127,006 controls) and identified 86 new genetic risk variants independently associated with prostate cancer risk, bringing the total to 269 known risk variants. The top genetic risk score (GRS) decile was associated with odds ratios that ranged from 5.06 (95% confidence interval (CI), 4.84–5.29) for men of European ancestry to 3.74 (95% CI, 3.36–4.17) for men of African ancestry. Men of African ancestry were estimated to have a mean GRS that was 2.18-times higher (95% CI, 2.14–2.22), and men of East Asian ancestry 0.73-times lower (95% CI, 0.71–0.76), than men of European ancestry. These findings support the role of germline variation contributing to population differences in prostate cancer risk, with the GRS offering an approach for personalized risk prediction.

Abstract: This study contributes to estimate the municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling effect on environmental quality and economic growth in the United States. Few studies have been given to macro-level aggregate analysis through national scale MSW recycling, environmental, and economic indicators. This study employs bootstrapping autoregressive distributed lag modeling for investigating the cointegration relationship among MSW recycling, economic growth, carbon emissions, and energy efficiency utilized quarterly data from 1990 to 2017. The result implies that a one percent increase in MSW recycling contributes to economic growth and reduce carbon emissions by 0.317% (0.157%) and 0.209% (0.087%) in the long-run (short-run). Similarly, a one percent improvement in energy efficiency stimulates economic growth by 0.489% (0.281%) and mitigates carbon emissions by 0.285% (0.197%) in the long-run (short-run). A higher per capita income and population growth caused higher emissions by 0.197% and 0.401% in the long-run. The overall results reveal stronger impacts in the long-run than the short-run with significant convergence towards long-run equilibrium, suggesting a prominent long-run transmission of economic and environmental fallouts. This study confirms a uni-directional causality from MSW recycling to economic growth, carbon emissions, and energy efficiency. These outcomes signify that any policy intervention related to MSW recycling produces significant changes in the level of economic growth and carbon emissions. The finding provides valuable insight for policymakers to counteract carbon emissions through recyclable waste management that simultaneously create significant economic value.

Abstract: Recently, many optimization algorithms have been applied for Feature selection (FS) problems and show a clear outperformance in comparison with traditional FS methods. Therefore, this has motivated our study to apply the new Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) on the FS problem. However, SSA, like other optimizations algorithms, suffer from the problem of population diversity and fall into local optima. To solve these problems, this study presents an enhanced version of SSA which is known as the Dynamic Salp swarm algorithm (DSSA). Two main improvements were included in SSA to solve its problems. The first improvement includes the development of a new equation for salps’ position update. The use of this new equation is controlled by using Singer's chaotic map. The purpose of the first improvement is to enhance SSA solutions' diversity. The second improvement includes the development of a new local search algorithm (LSA) to improve SSA exploitation. The proposed DSSA was combined with the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier in a wrapper mode. 20 benchmark datasets were selected from the UCI repository and 3 Hadith datasets to test and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed DSSA algorithm. The DSSA results were compared with the original SSA and four well-known optimization algorithms including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO), and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA). From the obtained results, DSSA outperformed the original SSA and the other well-known optimization algorithms over the 23 datasets in terms of classification accuracy, fitness function values, the number of selected features, and convergence speed. Also, DSSA accuracy results were compared with the most recent variants of the SSA algorithm. DSSA showed a significant improvement over the competing algorithms in statistical analysis. These results confirm the capability of the proposed DSSA to simultaneously improve the classification accuracy while selecting the minimal number of the most informative features.

Abstract: The performance is presented of the reconstruction and identification algorithms for electrons and photons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The reported results are based on proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded in 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 fb$^{-1}$. Results obtained from lead-lead collision data collected at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV are also presented. Innovative techniques are used to reconstruct the electron and photon signals in the detector and to optimize the energy resolution. Events with electrons and photons in the final state are used to measure the energy resolution and energy scale uncertainty in the recorded events. The measured energy resolution for electrons produced in Z boson decays in proton-proton collision data ranges from 2 to 5%, depending on electron pseudorapidity and energy loss through bremsstrahlung in the detector material. The energy scale in the same range of energies is measured with an uncertainty smaller than 0.1 (0.3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in proton-proton collisions and better than 1 (3)% in the barrel (endcap) region in heavy ion collisions. The timing resolution for electrons from Z boson decays with the full 2016-2018 proton-proton collision data set is measured to be 200 ps.

The investigation was carried out in ferromagnetic (FM), anti-ferromagnetic (AFM), and the non-magnetic (NM) phases of the Cu2MnAl-type structure (regular structure) and Hg2CuTi-type-structure (inverse structure). Both alloys were found to be more stable in the ferromagnetic phase of the Cu2MnAl-type structure. The equilibrium lattice parameter in this structure is equal to 6.39 Ǻ for Rh2MnZr and 6.35 Ǻ for Rh2MnHf. The electronic properties reveled the metallic nature of the Heusler Rh2MnZ (Z = Zr, Hf) alloys. The interpretation of the elastic properties confirmed the elastic stability of the two alloys in the studied structure with a good agreement between the resulting bulk modulus from the structural properties and that of resulting from the elastic properties. Other elastic parameters such as modulus B, shear modulus G, Young’s modulus E, Poisson’s ratio (ν) and Pugh’s ratio B/G, and the Zener anisotropy parameter A showed that the Rh2MnZ (Z = Zr, Hf) alloys are slightly deformed. They show high rigidity, anisotropic, and little deformation and behave in ductile way. The magnetic properties confirmed the ferromagnetic state of both compounds with computed total magnetic moment equal to 4.76 μB for Rh2MnZr and 4.60 μB for Rh2MnHf. The thermodynamic parameters were evaluated with various temperatures between 0 and 1200 K and a pressure from 0 to 50 GPa using the quasi-harmonic Debye model.

Abstract: Objective Liver biopsy is still needed for fibrosis staging in many patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate the individual diagnostic performance of liver stiffness measurement by vibration controlled transient elastography (LSM-VCTE), Fibrosis-4 Index (FIB-4) and NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) Fibrosis Score (NFS) and to derive diagnostic strategies that could reduce the need for liver biopsies. Design Individual patient data meta-analysis of studies evaluating LSM-VCTE against liver histology was conducted. FIB-4 and NFS were computed where possible. Sensitivity, specificity and area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) were calculated. Biomarkers were assessed individually and in sequential combinations. Results Data were included from 37 primary studies (n=5735; 45% women; median age: 54 years; median body mass index: 30 kg/m2; 33% had type 2 diabetes; 30% had advanced fibrosis). AUROCs of individual LSM-VCTE, FIB-4 and NFS for advanced fibrosis were 0.85, 0.76 and 0.73. Sequential combination of FIB-4 cut-offs ( Conclusion Sequential combinations of markers with a lower cut-off to rule-out advanced fibrosis and a higher cut-off to rule-in cirrhosis can reduce the need for liver biopsies.

Abstract: The current COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has prompted investigators worldwide to search for an effective anti-viral treatment. A number of anti-viral drugs such as ribavirin, remdesivir, lopinavir/ritonavir, antibiotics such as azithromycin and doxycycline, and anti-parasite such as ivermectin have been recommended for COVID-19 treatment. In addition, sufficient pre-clinical rationale and evidence have been presented to use chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19. Furthermore, Zn has the ability to enhance innate and adaptive immunity in the course of a viral infection. Besides, Zn supplement can favour COVID-19 treatment using those suggested and/or recommended drugs. Again, the effectiveness of Zn can be enhanced by using chloroquine as an ionophore while Zn inside the infected cell can stop SARS-CoV-2 replication. Given those benefits, this perspective paper describes how and why Zn could be given due consideration as a complement to the prescribed treatment of COVID-19.

As such, it has provided a steady restructuring of related technologies. However, the irregularities and uncertainties in dimensions and chemical compositions, makes the viability of such materials questionable. Concerns have been inclined about the transport, destiny, and transformation of nanomaterials discharged into the environment. A critical analysis of the present phase of knowledge concerning the exposure and effects of nanomaterials has been discussed in-depth. In this review, different nanomaterials along with their applications have also been reviewed, that include graphene-based nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes, and their composites, nanoclay composites, nanostructured thin films, metal-organic frameworks, conducting polymers and their composites, MXenes, chalcogenide nanocrystals, and quantum dots. Besides, a few of the groundbreaking applications of nanomaterials for different sectors like human health, processes, photochemical process, energy conversion and energy storage, separation and purification processes, optoelectronics, etc. are discussed in detail with their chemsitry. Moreover, the unique characteristics and applications of nanomaterials, they inherently introduce challenges for their applications and large-scale production. Abstract: With the increasing demand for Lithium-ion batteries in an electric vehicle (EV), it is always crucial to develop a highly accurate and low-cost state estimation method for the battery management system (BMS). Presently, the dual extended Kalman filter (DEKF) is extensively utilized for online SOC estimation. However, the problem of battery model parameter divergence from the true value greatly affects the estimation accuracy under realistic dynamic loading conditions. In this paper, the new dual forgetting factor-based adaptive extended Kalman filter (DFFAEKF) is proposed for SOC estimation. The proposed SOC estimation method is combined with the simple SOE estimation approach to develop the combined SOC and SOE estimation method. The quantitative relationships between SOC and SOE for all the test battery cells, which are established with the experimental data collected from different constant current discharge profiles are employed for SOE estimation. To evaluate the performance of the developed combined SOC and SOE estimation method, the three different chemistries battery cells are chosen for the testing under different dynamic loading profiles such as dynamic stress test (DST) and US06 drive cycle. For all the considered test battery cells, the experimental results indicated that the combined SOC and SOE estimation method using the proposed DFFAEKF can estimate the battery states under dynamic operating conditions with root mean square error (RMSE) less than 0.85% and 0.95% respectively. The proposed method also demonstrates fast convergence to its true value under erroneous initial conditions. Additionally, the order of worst-case big O notation complexity of the proposed DFFAEKF is equivalent to DEKF. Besides, the simplicity of the proposed method also supports to reduce the computational burden of the processor used in BMSs, and therefore it is well-suited for EV applications.

Abstract: In this article, a new maximum power point tracking algorithm based on a modified butterfly optimization algorithm has been proposed. The proposed method is capable of differentiating between different partial shading patterns, uniform shading, solar intensity, and load variation conditions with fast convergence speed (CS). Only one dynamic variable is used as a tuning parameter reducing the complexity of the algorithm. The search space skipping method has been proposed to improve the CS. The proposed method is hybridized with a constant impedance method to improve the response time of the system for fast varying load variations. The proposed method has been validated experimentally on the SEPIC converter topology with a sampling time of 0.05 s. The experimental validation proved the average tracking time for different shading patterns is less than 1 s with steady-state efficiency of 99.85% on average. The CS for uniform shading conditions is improved by 47.20%. The response to load variation is also improved by 86.15% and becomes eligible to be utilized for fast varying load variations. Finally, the comparison table based on the MPPT rating has been presented to determine the effectiveness of the proposed method among other popular metaheuristic approaches used for MPPT.

Abstract: Multilevel inverter (MLI) topologies play a crucial role in the dc–ac power conversion due to their high-quality performance and efficiency. This article aims to propose a new switched-capacitor-based boost multilevel inverter topology (SCMLI). The proposed topology consists of nine power semiconductor switches with one dc voltage source and two capacitors, capable of generating a nine-level output voltage waveform with twice voltage gain. With the addition of two switches, the proposed topology can be used for higher voltage-gain applications. Other features of the proposed topology include the self-voltage balancing of the capacitors, parallel operation of the capacitors, lower voltage stress across the switches, along with the inherent polarity changing capability. To obtain the high-quality output waveform, a selective harmonic elimination pulsewidth modulation technique is applied. In this technique, the detrimental low-order harmonics can easily be regulated and eliminated from the output voltage of MLI. The proposed topology is compared with the recently introduced SCMLI topologies considering various parameters to set the benchmark of the proposed topology. The performance of the proposed MLI is investigated through various experimental results using a laboratory prototype setup.

Abstract: This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent trends in incorporating biomass ashes from agricultural waste in Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and geopolymer concrete. The material properties of different biomass ashes and their effect on fresh and hardened concrete properties (i.e., mechanical and durability properties) are reviewed. Partial replacement of OPC with byproducts, such as bamboo leaf ash, date palm ash, elephant leaf ash, banana leaf ash and plantain peel ash, rice straw ash, olive waste ash, wheat straw ash, and corn cob ash, escorts reduction in carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions and global warming. It will also contribute to the effort of achieving zero-waste technology and sustainable development. This paper provides essential background information on the global status, composition, and ash preparation procedures of green and sustainable cementitious materials and then explores their potential applications. This review also highlights the areas requiring further research and indicates the possible negative impacts of utilizing these non-traditional supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The findings from this review confirm the feasibility of using biomass ashes as pozzolanic materials in cement concrete or as alternative activators in geopolymer concrete, with the required properties of building materials. Also, it is expected that this review will provide a better insight into biomass ashes incorporated in concrete for the benefit of academic/fundamental research and the construction industry.
