TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of changing labour market conditions on early career outcomes for those who entered the labour markets in 12 European Union countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom) in the late 1980s and the late 1990s were investigated.
Abstract: This article sets out to address the effects of changing labour market conditions on early career outcomes for those who entered the labour markets in 12 European Union countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom) in the late 1980s and the late 1990s. It is based on data from the 1988-97 European Community Labour Force Surveys (ECLFS) and the analyses focus on the responses of the outcomes of unemployment risks and occupational allocation to different aspects of socio-economic change. The article begins by discussing the theoretical background and hypotheses of the study and then describes the ECLFS database and the methodology. The study found that unemployment risks have closely followed the evolution of aggregate economic conditions with demographic factors having only a slight impact. Consequently, changes in occupation allocation are more dependent on the relative evolution of educational expansion and occupational upgrading trends. The article concludes with a summary of the results and their implications.

TL;DR: The European Commission's new governance strategy, which was launched at the beginning of the century, varies according to normative standards set by different theories of democracy on the one hand and to the confidence in the malleability of society on the other as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: European integration has added an extra dimension to the perceived crisis of contemporary democracy. Many observers argue that the allocation of decision-making powers beyond the nation state bears the risk of hollowing out the institutional mechanisms of democratic accountability. In EU governance, the Commission has emerged as a particularly active and imaginative actor promoting EU–society relations, and it has done so with the explicit desire to improve the democratic legitimacy of the EU. However, assumptions concerning the societal prerequisites of a working democracy differ with the normative theory of democracy employed. Therefore, expectations concerning the beneficial effect of institutional reforms such as the European Commission's new governance strategy, which was launched at the beginning of the century, vary according to normative standards set by different theories of democracy on the one hand and to the confidence in the malleability of society on the other.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the simultaneous effects of brand equity and human capital on firm value and showed that both resources create relatively more value in a service setting than a manufacturing setting.
Abstract: Research and managerial practice generally contend that human capital and brand equity constitute a company’s most valuable resources. Relying on similar underlying theoretical rationales, research on the value relevance of these two resources has developed in different disciplines. Combining diverse data sources, the authors examine the simultaneous effects of brand equity and human capital on firm value. In addition, they consider how much the effects of these two resources differ between services and manufacturing. Results provide evidence for a complementary relationship between human capital and brand equity and show that both resources create relatively more value in a service setting.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated politically connected German firms and found that members of the conservative party (CDU/CSU) and the liberal party (FDP) are more likely to work for firms than members of left-wing parties (SPD and The Left) or the green party (Alliance 90/The Greens).
Abstract: This paper investigates politically connected German firms. With the introduction of a new transparency law, information on additional income sources of all members of the German parliament is now publicly available. We find that members of the conservative party (CDU/CSU) and the liberal party (FDP) are more likely to work for firms than members of left-wing parties (SPD and The Left) or the green party (Alliance 90/The Greens). Most importantly, politically connected firms significantly outperform unconnected firms on market- and accounting-based performance measures. The eect is more pronounced the higher the monetary compensation the delegate receives from the firm is.
