Abstract: Many e-tailers providing attended home delivery, especially e-grocers, offer narrow delivery time slots to ensure satisfactory customer service. The choice of delivery time slots has to balance marketing and operational considerations, which results in a complex planning problem. We study the problem of selecting the set of time slots to offer in each of the zip codes in a service region. The selection needs to facilitate cost-effective delivery routes, but also needs to ensure an acceptable level of service to the customer. We present a fully automated approach that is capable of producing high-quality delivery time slot offerings in a short amount of time. Computational experiments reveal the value of this approach and the impact of the environment on the underlying trade-offs.

Abstract: The detection and extraction of complex anatomical structures usually involves a trade-off between the complexity of local feature extraction and classification, and the complexity and performance of the subsequent structural inference from the viewpoint of combinatorial optimization. Concerning the latter, computationally efficient methods are of particular interest that return the globally-optimal structure. We present an efficient method for part-based localization of anatomical structures which embeds contextual shape knowledge in a probabilistic graphical model. It allows for robust detection even when some of the part detections are missing. The application scenario for our statistical evaluation is spine detection and labeling in magnetic resonance images.

Abstract: We propose a graph-based semantic model for representing document content. Our method relies on the use of a semantic network, namely the DBpedia knowledge base, for acquiring fine-grained information about entities and their semantic relations, thus resulting in a knowledge-rich document model. We demonstrate the benefits of these semantic representations in two tasks: entity ranking and computing document semantic similarity. To this end, we couple DBpedia's structure with an information-theoretic measure of concept association, based on its explicit semantic relations, and compute semantic similarity using a Graph Edit Distance based measure, which finds the optimal matching between the documents' entities using the Hungarian method. Experimental results show that our general model outperforms baselines built on top of traditional methods, and achieves a performance close to that of highly specialized methods that have been tuned to these specific tasks.
