TL;DR: This work uses data of older men from the US Health and Retirement Study to estimate the effect of continued labour market participation at older ages on later-life cognition, and finds no clear relationship between retirement duration and later- life cognition for white-collar workers and, if anything, a positive relationship for blue-collar Workers.
Abstract: Cognitive impairment has emerged as a major driver of disability in old age, with profound effects on individual well-being and decision making at older ages. In the light of policies aimed at postponing retirement ages, an important question is whether continued labour supply helps to maintain high levels of cognition at older ages. We use data of older men from the US Health and Retirement Study to estimate the effect of continued labour market participation at older ages on later-life cognition. As retirement itself is likely to depend on cognitive functioning and may thus be endogenous, we use offers of early retirement windows as instruments for retirement in econometric models for later-life cognitive functioning. These offers of early retirement are legally required to be nondiscriminatory and thus, inter alia, unrelated to cognitive functioning. At the same time, these offers of early retirement options are significant predictors of retirement. Although the simple ordinary least squares estimates show a negative relationship between retirement duration and various measures of cognitive functioning, instrumental variable estimates suggest that these associations may not be causal effects. Specifically, we find no clear relationship between retirement duration and later-life cognition for white-collar workers and, if anything, a positive relationship for blue-collar workers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derived preimage security bounds for block cipher based double-block-length, double-call hash functions, such as Abreast-DM, Tandem-DM and Hirose's scheme.
Abstract: We present new techniques for deriving preimage resistance bounds for block cipher based double-block-length, double-call hash functions. We give improved bounds on the preimage security of the three "classical" double-block-length, double-call, block cipher-based compression functions, these being Abreast-DM, Tandem-DM and Hirose's scheme. For Hirose's scheme, we show that an adversary must make at least 22n−5 block cipher queries to achieve chance 0.5 of inverting a randomly chosen point in the range. For Abreast-DM and Tandem-DM we show that at least 22n−10 queries are necessary. These bounds improve upon the previous best bounds of Ω(2n) queries, and are optimal up to a constant factor since the compression functions in question have range of size 22n.

TL;DR: The q-error is defined to measure deviations of size estimates from actual sizes and bounds are provided such that if the q- error is smaller than this bound, the query optimizer constructs an optimal plan.
Abstract: Query optimizers rely on accurate estimations of the sizes of intermediate results. Wrong size estimations can lead to overly expensive execution plans. We first define the q-error to measure deviations of size estimates from actual sizes. The q-error enables the derivation of two important results: (1) We provide bounds such that if the q-error is smaller than this bound, the query optimizer constructs an optimal plan. (2) If the q-error is bounded by a number q, we show that the cost of the produced plan is at most a factor of q4 worse than the optimal plan. Motivated by these findings, we next show how to find the best approximation under the q-error. These techniques can then be used to build synopsis for size estimates. Finally, we give some experimental results where we apply the developed techniques.

TL;DR: Time should be an important aspect of organizational theory, but it has been neglected for decades as discussed by the authors. But it has not yet been adequately considered in organizational research, which is a serious issue.
Abstract: Time should be an important aspect of organizational theory, but it has been neglected for decades. In this essay, I describe four different ways in which time can be conceptualized in organizational research. I give examples from recent theoretical work that include a temporal perspective. I also specify some directions about how future theory development and refinement should incorporate time.

TL;DR: In this paper, an econometric analysis of firm performance in Germany is presented, based on a unique panel data set with detailed information on almost 400 manufacturing firms over the 1986-94 period, and they find that firms operating in industries which are characterized by more intensive product market competition experience higher rates of productivity growth.
Abstract: Productivity growth has been slow in many continental European countries over the last few decades, especially in comparison with the United States. It has been argued that lack of product market competition and poor corporate governance are two of the main reasons for this phenomenon. However, predictions from theoretical models are far from unambiguous, and empirical evidence is sparse, in particular at the level of individual firms. In this paper, we aim to close this gap with an econometric analysis of firm performance in Germany. Based on a unique panel data set with detailed information on almost 400 manufacturing firms over the 1986-94 period, we find that firms operating in industries which are characterized by more intensive product market competition experience higher rates of productivity growth. We also find weak evidence for the notion that in Germany?s bank-based system of internal control, ownership concentration is harmful for productivity growth.
