Observations on the fine structure and development of the spindle at mitosis and meiosis in a marine centric diatom (Lithodesmium undulatum). I. Preliminary survey of mitosis in spermatogonia.

Abstract: SUMMARY A spindle precursor is shown to be a relatively constant feature in non-dividing cells of Lithodesmium undulatum and its structure is described and illustrated. It is a small somewhat rectangular body closely pressed to the nuclear envelope and composed of a series of parallel plates of semi-opaque material placed edgeways on a square ground plan about 0·6 μm in length and breadth. The plates at each end are the densest and the next most dense marks the centre. During prophase in the spermatogonia the spindle proper is laid down between the precursor and the underlying nuclear envelope. It consists of tubules which increase in size and number as prophase advances, the spindle poles being marked by extensions from the terminal plates of the precursor, the rest of which ultimately breaks down, thereby permitting rapid elongation of the spindle itself to take place. After breakdown of the nuclear envelope, the spindle sinks into the mass of chromosomes, as previously described with the light microscope in other diatoms. The fine structure of the metaphase spindle is described and illustrated, special attention being paid to the number and arrangement of the component microtubules, both in a normal cell and a giant cell. Anaphase is not examined but a few stages of telophase are added, including some stages of cleavage. The results are discussed in a preliminary way pending completion of a study of meiosis. Points raised include consideration of a possible homologue of the so-called centrosome of pennate diatoms and certain aspects of the numerical relation between chromosomes and spindle tubules.

Quantitative polarographische Sauerstoffdruckmessung auf der Kopfhaut des Neugeborenen

Abstract: Auf der arterialisierten Kopfhaut von 2–6 Tage alten Kindern wurde unblutig — und zur Kontrolle blutig — der Sauerstoffdruck mit einer neuen Mesanordnung bestimmt. Es zeigte sich, das reprasentative und vergleichbare Messungen auf der Kopfhaut moglich sind. Das eigentliche Problem besteht in der Fixierung der Elektrode auf der Kopfhaut. Auf der arterialisierten Kopfhaut wurden 67,7±7,1 mm Hg gemessen, die entsprechenden Blutwerte betrugen 67,8±8,4 mm Hg. In einer zweiten Serie wurde der Gewebsdruck auf der nichtarterialisierten Kopfhaut mit 36,8±9,4 mm Hg bestimmt. Ein Vergleich der Ergebnisse mit den Werten der Literatur ergibt eine weitgehende Ubereinstimmung.

Electron microscopical studies on experimental ischemic lesions of the heart

Abstract: Electron microscopical alterations of the myocardium during or following an ischemia may be investigated by any one of the following three experimental methods: (1) permanent ligation of a coronary artery branch, (2) temporary ligation of a coronary artery branch, and (3) cardiac arrest without coronary perfusion. Since a report on the effects of a temporary ischemia on the myocardium is given by Dr. R. B. Jennings in this monograph, and since cardiac arrest is a special case-in which not only the ischemic but also other factors, such as body temperature and the method used to cause the arrest, are of importance-we should like to concentrate on the electron microscopical findings during and following the development of an experimental infarct.

Phänomenologische „Thermodynamik“ des Schmelzens von Polymeren

Abstract: Unter Ausschlus von Relaxation und Rekristallisation wird allgemein angegeben, wie man gehemmte partiell kristallisierte Zustande phanomenologisch mit dem Formalismus der Thermodynamik bei sinngemas erweitertem Variabeinsatz vollstandig kennzeichnen kann. Dieses grundlegende Verfahren wird speziell auf kristallisierende oligomere und polymere Einstoff- und entsprechende eutektische Mehrstoffsysteme aus linearen stereoregularen Ketten ubertragen. Selbst die stark gehemmte partiell kristallisierten Zustande von physikalisch und chemisch vernetzten Copolymeren konnen mit demselben Formalismus quantitativ charakterisiert werden, wenn man die Diffusionshinderungen der kristallisierfahigen Molekulteile durch eine empirische Ahnlichkeitstransformation der tatsachlichen Molekulgegebenheiten berucksichtigt. Die Gegebenheiten des Molekulbaues, Kettenlangen, deren Verteilungsfunktion sowie die Verteilung der Comonomereneinheiten, werden mittels geeigneter Parameter in die phanomenologische Beschreibung eingefuhrt. Eine derartige kombiniert molekular-phanomenologische Beschreibung bewahrt sich auch fur gehemmte partiell kristallisierte Zustande von oligomeren, polymeren oder copolymeren Proben, die als Mehrstoffsysteme unter optimalen Bedingungen kristallisiert sind, weil die Kristallisationshemmungen in ubersichtlicher Form von den Pramissen des Molekulbaues abhangen.

Static and dynamic properties of warm fibres in the infraorbital nerve

Abstract: Specific warm receptors in the nasal region of cats show a static discharge at constant temperatures between 30 and 48°C. The frequency of single fibres rises steeply with temperature, reaches a maximum between 45 and 47°C and then falls to zero. Rapid warming causes an overshoot, rapid cooling a transient inhibition of the warm fibre discharge. Below the static threshold, dynamic reponses can still be elicited. The dynamic maximum frequency increases with the adapting temperature and with the amount of temperature change. Dynamic and static differential sensitivities depend also on temperature, the dynamic values being several times higher than the static ones. At high temperatures, slow linear cooling causes a decrease but no complete inhibition of the continuous warm fibre discharge.

Phase transitions and the distribution of temperature zeros of the partition function

Abstract: A general method is given by which the density of complex temperature zeros of the canonical partition function, characterizing the temperature behaviour of a many particle system, can be calculated if only line densities occur. As a result it is shown that straight lines of zeros and a simple power law for the line density form a necessary and sufficient description for equal critical indices α=α′. The most important conclusion is that different critical indices α≡α′ occur if and only if the line of zeros ∁ cuts the real axis under a certain limiting angle. Die postnatale Entwicklung der Harderschen Drüse der weißen Ratte

Abstract: The postnatal development of the Harderian gland of the rat was studied by light microscopy using paraffin- and epon-embedded tissues of animals ranging from newly born to the age of 13 weeks. In one week old rats two types of glandular cells can be distinguished: A-cells and B-cells. At this time the more numerous A-cells are less vacuolated than the B-cells. When the rats have opened their eyes (14th day) conspicuous changes in the morphology of the Harderian gland become evident: There is a pronounced increase in secretory activity, in cytoplasmic vacuolation (particularly of the A-cells) in cell height and in the diameters of the tubular endpieces. At the end of the 2nd week the occurrence of a third cell type (C-cells) with pale cytoplasm and pycnotic nucleus is observed. C-cells are interpreted to be necrobiotic A-cells or B-cells. It is considered that the Harderian gland might have not only an apocrine (or merocrine ?) but also a holocrine mode of secretion. At the 9th day the first yellowish-brown pigment granules can be observed in some of the glandular lumina. One day earlier some areas of the gland (unstained kryostat sections) exhibit a pink fluorescence in ultra-violet light, indicating the presence of porphyrin. The pigmentation of the gland reaches highest intensity about the 3rd and 4th postnatal weeks. Sex dimorphism with respect to pigmentation has not been stated. From the histogenesis there was also no support for a sex dependent function of the Harderian gland. Die Hardersche Druse neugeborener bis 13 Wochen alter Ratten wurde an Hand von Paraffin- und Eponschnitten untersucht. Dabei liesen sich bereits im Alter von 1 Woche erste Zeichen einer intrazellularen Sekretbildung in Form feiner Fetttropfen beobachten und zwei Zelltypen (A- und B-Zellen) unterscheiden, von denen die B-Zellen zunachst dichter vakuolisiert sind als die zahlreicheren A-Zellen. Nach der Offnung der Lidspalte am 14. Lebenstage steigt die Aktivitat der Drusenzellen deutlich an, wobei die Sekrettropfen — vor allem in den A-Zellen — an Zahl und Durchmesser zunehmen und die Zellen vergrosert werden. Gegen Ende der 2. Lebenswoche treten neben den genannten Zelltypen auffallend blas getonte Zellen mit z. T. pyknotischen Kernen auf (C-Zellen), die als zugrundgehende A- oder B-Zellen gedeutet werden. Es wird in Erwagung gezogen, das die Hardersche Druse nicht nur nach dem apokrinen (oder merokrinen ?), sondern auch nach dem holokrinen Mechanismus sezerniert. Die bei erwachsenen Tieren mehrfach beschriebenen porphyrinhaltigen Pigmentkornchen in den Drusenlichtungen treten erstmals im Alter von 9 Tagen auf. Porphyrin last sich fluoreszenzmikroskopisch bereits 1 Tag vorher nachweisen. Die intensivste Pigmentierung der Druse besteht wahrend der 3. und 4. Lebenswoche. Eindeutige Geschlechtsunterschiede bezuglich der Pigmentierung waren nicht festzustellen. Auch aus der Histogenese ergab sich kein Anhalt fur eine geschlechtsgebundene Funktion der Harderschen Druse.

Der konstruktive Bau des Zonulaapparates beim Menschen und dessen funktioneile Bedeutung

Abstract: An menschlichen Autopsieaugen wird der konstruktive Aufbau des Zonulaapparates anhand von Totalpraparaten, isolierten Hautchen und histologischen Serienschnitten neu untersucht. Im Zonulafasersystem, das als eine Einheit aufgefast werden mus, existieren zwei funktionell verschiedene Fasergruppen: a) die Haltefasern, die vom Orbiculus bis zur Linse durchlaufen und sich in der Mitte der Ziliartaler in 2 Bundelscharen aufgabeln (Zonulagabel) und b) die Spannfasern, die sich im hinteren Bereich der Ziliarfortsatze und Ziliartaler vom Hauptsystem abspalten und dort an der Grenzmembran festhaften. In diesem Gebiet weist das Ziliarepithel strukturelle Besonderheiten auf (inselartige Zellproliferationen am unpigmentierten Ziliarepithel, zapfenartige Vorbuchtungen des Pigmentepithels, Schragstellung von Epithel und Bindegewebe in Richtung der Spannfasern). Im Gegensatz zur Helmholtzschen Akkommodationstheorie wird angenommen, das fur die Akkommodation nicht die hinteren Abschnitte des Orbiculus, sondern vielmehr die vorderen Teile der Pars plana sowie die Ziliartaler funktionell von Bedeutung sind. Bei der Ziliarmuskelkontraktion werden diese Abschnitte nach vorne innen verlagert, wodurch vermutlich die Spannfasern gespannt werden konnen. Dieser Zug wird sich dann auf das Hauptfasersystem ubertragen und damit die Zonulagabel mit ihren Faserfachern zur Linse hin entlasten, was die Erhohung der Brechkraft ermoglicht.

Integrated static acitivity of lingual cold receptors.

Abstract: Static discharge frequencies of 72 single or few cold fibre preparations from the lingual nerve of the cat were measured as a function of constant temperatures of the tongue. The average maximum discharge was at ca. 27°C. At 10 and 40°C some cold receptors were still firing continuously.

Zur Spezifität der Osmoreceptoren in der Leber

Abstract: 1. An wachen Ratten mit einoperierten Gefaskathetern wird gleichzeitig und mit gleicher Geschwindigkeit in die V. portae und V. cava caud. Wasser bzw. 1,8% NaCl-Losung infundiert. Bei der gewahlten relativ kleinen Infusionsrate tritt nur im Falle der Infusion von Wasser in die V. portae und gleichzeitig 1,8% NaCl-Losung in die V. cava caud. eine starke Steigerung der Diurese auf, wahrend bei vertauschten Losungen, d. h. Wasser in die V. cava caud. und 1,8% NaCl in die V. portae eine vorubergehende Antidiurese beobachtet werden kann. 2. Kleine Mengen hypertoner Losung, intraportal bzw. intracaval injiziert, haben nur im ersten Falle eine antidiuretische Wirkung (Verney-Versuch an der V. portae). 3. Auch bei Infusionen von Na-freien Losungen in die V. portae last sich die diuretische Aktivitat uber die Osmoreceptoren der Leber auslosen und abstufen. 4. Infusionen von Wasser in die Aorta abdominalis und V. cava haben hinsichtlich der diuretischen Aktivitat die gleiche Wirkung. 5. Wird beim wachen Tier durch einen extracorporalen portocavalen Shunt die Leberdurchblutung von 4–12 ml/min variiert, so ist dies ohne Einflus auf die Diurese. 6. Die Ergebnisse bestatigen die Existenz von spezifischen Osmoreceptoren in der Leber. Ihr adaquater Reiz ist die osmotische Konzentration des Portalblutes. Sie arbeiten sowohl im hypo-wie hypertonen Bereich und beeinflussen die Urinsekretion zu einem Zeitpunkt, an dem die Osmolaritat des Gesamtblutes noch unverandert ist. Sie sind den cerebralen Osmoreceptoren (Verney) vorgeschaltet.

Über die Spaltung von Aminalen und 1,3-Dialkylimidazolidinen mit Heterokumulenen†

Abstract: Die Spaltung von Aminalen (I) mit Isocyanaten fuhrt zu Aminomethyl-carbamidsaureamiden (III, IV), die mit Isothiocyanaten zu den entsprechenden Aminomethylthiocarbamidsaure-amiden (XXI). Aus 1,3-Dialkyl-imidazolidinen (X) und Isocyanaten bzw. Isothiocyanaten entstehen analog unter Ringerweiterung Hexahydro-1,3,5-triazepin-(2)-one (XI, XIX, XX) bzw. Hexahydro-1,3,5-triazepin-(2)-thione (XXII). Die Umsetzung von X mit Keten fuhrt zu Hexahydro-1,4-diazepin-(5)-onen (XXIII), die mit Keteniminen zu Derivaten des 2-Methylen-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazepins (XXIV). Reaction of Animals and 1,3-Dialkyl-imidazolidines with Heterocumulenes Aminals (I) react with isocyanates to aminomethyl-carbamic acid amides (III, IV) and with isothiocyanates to the corresponding aminomethyl-thiocarbamic acid amides (XXI). In a similar way hexahydro-1,3,5-triazepin-(2)-one (XI, XIX, XX) and hexahydro-1,3,5-triazepin-(2)-thione (XXII) are formed from 1,3-dialkyl-imidazolidines (X) and isocyanates or isothiocyantes by ring enlargement. The reaction of X with ketene gives hexahydro-1,4-diazepin-(5)-ones (XXIII); with ketenimines derivates of 2-methylenehexahydro-1,3,5-triazepine (XXIV) are formed.

Morphologische Untersuchungen an der Glandula bulbourethralis der Katze

Abstract: Das Parenchym der Glandula bulbourethralis der Katze besteht aus weitlumigen, gebuchteten intraglandularen Gangen, in welche kurze, englumige, zumeist unverzweigte Tubuli einmunden. Der Druse fehlt eine ausere Organkapsel, so das ihre peripheren Tubuli stellenweise direkt zwischen den Fasern des quergestreiften M. bulboglandularis liegen. Die Drusentubuli und die Buchten der intraglandularen Gange sind mit einem einschichtigen Zylinderepithel ausgekleidet, auf den Gangfalten ist das Epithel abschnittsweise mehrreihig, Die sezernierende Epitheloberflache ist durch die Ausbildung von interzellularen Sekretkapillaren vergrosert. Breite Zwischenzellspalten (Durchmesser etwa 1,5μ), in welche schlanke interdigitierende Cytoplasmafortsatze hineinragen, erstrecken sich von der Basalmembran bis kurz unter das Tubulusbzw. Ganglumen. Die lumenseitigen Zellgrenzen tragen einige stummelformige Mikrovilli und besitzen zerkluftete Ausenkonturen, die durch glykogenreiche Cytoplasmaprojektionen bedingt sind. Alle Epithelzellen sind reich an Mitochondrien. Die supranuklearen Abschnitte der meisten Gang- und Tubuluszellen enthalten Sekretgranula, welche im Elektronenmikroskop unterschiedliche optische Dichten aufweisen konnen. Die Granula enthalten ein PAS-positives, neuraminsaurehaltiges epitheliales Muzin, das in einzelnen Sekretkornchen auch eine histochemische Reaktion auf Sulfatgruppen gibt. Alle Epithelzellen reagieren sehr stark auf unspezifische Esterase und stark auf β-D-Glucuronidase, β-D-Glactosidase sowie die Enzyme des Citronensaurezyklus, der Glykolyse und der Atmungskette (NAD-ICDH, SDH, ALD, LDH, ADH, GDH, NADH-T-Red, Cyt-Ox).

Distribution of tritiated ecdysone in salivary glands and other tissues ofRhynchosciara andChironomus larvae an autoradiographic study.

Abstract: The distribution of tritium-labelled ecdysone in salivary glands ofChironomus tentans and different tissues ofRhynchosciara spec, has been studied, following in vivo incubations and either of two modified ethanol-acetic acid fixation techniques. The results of autoradiographic analysis show maximum label over the cytoplasm or evenly labelled cytoplasm and nuclei, within a wide range of incubation times. Indications of distinct localization at chromosomal loci are not conclusive. There is a remarkably high amount of radioactivity in the lumen of the anterior intestine as soon as six minutes after hormone injection. The limitations of histoautoradiographic studies in attempts to localize the cellular receptor of ecdysone are discussed.

Effect of desaspidin and DCMU on photokinesis of blue-green algae.

Abstract: — The effect of desaspidin and DCMU (3–(3.4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) on the speed of movement in light and dark of the blue-green alga Phormidium uncinatum has been investigated. Desaspidin, which uncouples oxidative phosphorylation and predominantly cyclic photosynthetic phosphorylations, inhibits movement in the dark and light as well, but dark movement is more sensitive. Movement in the light is more sensitive under anaerobic conditions than in air. The inhibitory effect of desaspidin is markedly increased by DCMU, which inhibits non-cyclic electron transport and coupled phosphorylation in air as well as under argon. There is no evidence for any photodestruction of desaspidin in air, provided that no ferricyanide is present in the medium. These findings are interpreted to confirm the concept that photokinesis (i.e. a light induced acceleration of movement in microorganisms) is the result of an increased ATP production by photosynthetic phosphorylation and that both cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylations supply energy for the movement in blue-green algae.

The presence of giant cells with multiple nuclei in basalioma

Abstract: Bei der Beurteilung von 780 Basaliomen fanden sich in 7 Fallen (0,89%) mehrkernige Riesenzellen. Bezugnehmend auf die Haufigkeit dieses Befundes wurde vorgeschlagen, die mehrkernige Riesenzelle den in Basaliomen vorkommenden, schon bekannten Zelltypen hinzuzufugen.
