Abstract: The conodonts are divided into the Westergaardodinida and Conodontophorida orders. The latter (conodonts proper) are divided into 8 superfamilies. The Distacodontacea (Proconodontidae, Clavohamulidae, and Distacodontidae families) are on the whole a simple, ‘primitive’ group. The Chirognathacea include Oistodus (s.str.), Chirognathus, and Rhipidognathus. The Panderodontacea are mainly simple cones. The Prioniodinacea have compound, non-blade elements. The Prioniodontacea include the Periodontidae, Prioniodontidae, Balognathidae, and Icriodontidae families. Bryantodontace, Gondolellacea, and Polygnathacea are based on platform-stock genera. The Polygnathacea (spathognathodon-tids, polygnathids, and indiognathodontids) may comprise two major stocks independent since the Ordovician.

Abstract: Using synchronous cultures, the change in the potential photosynthetic capacity and the behavior of the photosynthetic quotient were investigated during the life cycle of Scenedesmus obliquus, strain D 3.
Scenedesmus obliquus was synchronized under a light-dark regime of 14:10 hours. The quality of synchrony was demonstrated by complete synchronization, homogeneity, exponential growth, shortest possible life cycle and non-susceptibility of the life cycle to the synchronizing procedure. Furthermore, the synchronous culture was characterized by determination of cell number, dry weight, packed cell volume, chlorophylls a and b and the carotenoids during the life cycle. The potential photosynthetic capacity (as O2 evolution) was measured manometrically and polarographically in white light. This capacity increased from the beginning of the light period until the 8th hour and then declined until the 16th hour, that is until just before release of daughter cell. The percentage difference between the maximum and the minimum of the photosynthetic capacity was the same in the light saturating and light limiting region of photosynthesis. — The photosynthetic quotient was measured by means of Warburg's “indirect method”. It proved to be constant throughout the life cycle under light saturating and light limiting conditions. The ratio of O2 evolved to CO2 consumed was just below unity. The results were compared with those of other authors and their significance was discussed. It was concluded that the change in the photosynthetic capacity is inherent in the normal life cycle of green algae and is not a result of the synchronizing light-dark regime.

Abstract: IN a recent paper1 the energy transfer from an excited molecule S to an acceptor A was considered as a retardation effect. In classical terms, the field of S induces A to oscillate and the induced field of A, arriving at S, slows down this oscillator. This effect may be studied, too, without A being an absorber, but simply a polarizable molecule, oscillating in phase with the radiation field of S at the location of A. Then the field which is produced by A and acting at S accelerates or slows down this oscillator depending on the phase relation to its motion; thus the decay time of the luminescence of S will be prolonged or shortened. This phase relation depends on the time needed for the propagation of the electromagnetic field from S to A and from A to S.

Abstract: The maternal organism provides essential conditions for preimplantation development of the mammalian embryo by means of tubal and uterine proliferation and secretion. The uterine mucosa of a sexually mature rabbit shows the typical picture of an oestrous endometrium, moderate proliferation of the cavum and glandular epithelium (Fig. l a). The surface of the endometrium carries a single-layered, cubic to cylindrical epithelium, areas of which are covered with cilia. The cavum epithelium sinks down into short, narrow crypts, the uterine glands, in the tunica propria. There are no signs of typical secretory activity (Fig. 1 b, c).

Abstract: Untersucht wurden die Bauchspeicheldrusen von 25 Albinoratten, die nach der Saugeperiode ausschlieslich mit Milch (=Cu-Mangelkost) gefuttert wurden. Der Beschreibung der Pankreaslasionen werden einige klinische Symptome der Cu-Mangelkrankheit vorangestellt: verzogerte Gewichtszunahme der Tiere, Felldefekte, Farbanderung der Schneidezahne, Diarrhoe, leichter Exophthalmus. Die Bauchspeicheldrusen weisen nach 7- und mehrwochiger Cu-Mangeldiat makroskopisch hochgradige Atrophie und Lipomatose auf. Histologisch finden sich an den Acinuszellen verminderte Basophilie, RNS-Schwund, Abnahme des Cymogengranulagehalts sowie pyknotische und karyolytische Zellkerne. Daneben treten hypertrophisch-degenerative Veranderungen in Form von Riesenkernen und Riesenzellen auf. Durch Zelluntergange wird die normale Acinusstruktur in zunehmendem Mase zerstort. Die Defekte werden durch Binde- und Fettgewebe ersetzt, ohne das es vorher zur Exsudatbildung oder zu cellularer Infiltration kommt. Die Befunde werden auf Fermentsynthesestorungen infolge Cu-Mangels zuruckgefuhrt und in den Formenkreis der „metabolischen Pankreaslasionen“ (Doerr, 1964) eingereiht.

Abstract: Der M. ciliaris des Jugendlichen besteht aus Bundeln glatter Muskelfasern. Zwischen den durch eine Fibrocytenscheide vollstandig umschlossenen Muskelbundeln findet sich eine mehr oder weniger breite Gleitzone, in der gemischte, mit einer Fibrocytenhulle umgebene Nerven, Gefase sowie vereinzelt Pigmentzellen gelegen sind. Die Gleitzone steht mit dem intertrabecularen Raum der Kammerwinkelregion in Verbindung, so das Kammerwasser zwischen die Bundel des Ciliarmuskels eindringen kann.

Zum Vergleich wurde die Konzentration von Kalium und Natrium mitbestimmt.

Abstract: Es wird die Ultrastruktur der spongiformen Pustel bei der Psoriasis pustulosa beschrieben. Als primare Erscheinung bei der Entstehung dieser Pustel ist die Cytolyse zu werten. Sie beginnt in der perinuclearen Zone der Keratinocyten des oberen Str. spinosum und Str. granulosum. Die Penetration von Leukocyten erfolgt erst sekundar. Die Wichtigkeit dieser Befunde, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Psoriasis vulgaris, wurde diskutiert.

Abstract: Most of the rapidly labelled RNA from rat liver submitted to column chromatography on methylated albumin on kieselguhr remains tightly bound to the column and can only be recovered by elution with m-ammonia. The tightly bound RNA is composed mainly of DNA-like RNA. The binding capacity is dependent not only on base composition but also on molecular size: the heavier RNA molecules show a greater affinity to the column than do the lower-molecular-weight components. Rapidly labelled mouse liver and Saccharomyces cerevisiae RNA show similar behaviour to rat liver RNA on columns of methylated albumin on kieselguhr.

Abstract: Die Mehrzahl der sezernierenden Zylinderzellen in den tubulosen Endstucken der Glandula bulbourethralis der Ziege sind Schleimzellen. Ihre grosen, aufgehellten Sekretgranula, die fast den gesamten Zelleib ausfallen, liegen so dicht, das sie sich gegenseitig abplatten. Einzelne von ihnen haben ihre Hullmembran verloren und neigen zur Konfluenz. Alle Schleimkornchen sind PAS-positiv, viele von ihnen zeigen eine neuraminidaselabile Alcianophilie bei pH 2,5. Neben den Schleimzellen findet man in der Glandula bulbourethralis der Ziege einen zweiten Zelltyp, der durch helle, blasenformige Kerne, ein stark entfaltetes granulares endoplasmatisches Retikulum mit dilatierten Zisternen sowie ein ausgedehntes supranukleares Golgi-Feld gekennzeichnet ist. Dieser zweite Zelltyp enthalt sehr elektronendichte, isoliert liegende Sekretkugeln, welche lichtmikroskopisch eine Proteinreaktion geben. Zwischen beiden Zelltypen kommen morphologische Ubergangsformen vor. Dies macht es wahrscheinlich, das es sich bei den beiden Typen lediglich um Funktionsstadien einer einzigen Drusenzelle handelt. Die sezernierende Oberflache beider Zelltypen ist durch die Ausbildung interzellularer Sekretkapillaren vergrosert. Diese sind bereits lichtmikroskopisch aufgrund ihrer kraftigen ATPase- und 5′-Nucleotidaseaktivitat zu identifizieren. Das gesamte Drusenparenchym reagiert sehr stark auf unspezifische Esterase und deutlich positiv auf β-D-Galactosidase, β-D-Glucuronidase, Leucinaminopeptidase, Cytochromoxydase und Succinatdehydrogenase. Die letzten 5 Enzyme sind in den Schleimzellen in geringerer Konzentration festzustellen als in den Zellen mit Eiweisgranula.

Abstract: Patients with cirrhosis of the liver frequently have an increased cardiac output *l and diminished systemic vascular ~ e s i s t a n c e . ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This hyperkinetic circulatory state probably represents a response to a decrease in systemic vascular resistance. The existence of a circulating vasodilating substance has been suggested as a possible cause. The available evidence would indicate that it must be affecting the vascular system at various sites. It could be responsible for an admixture of venous to arterial blood since arterial oxygen unsaturation was found in about one-third of patients with hepatic The possibility of anastomoses between the pulmonary veins and either the pulmonary artery or the portal venous system has been discussed repeatedly. To investigate further the relationships between portal hypertension and pulmonary circulation as the possible basis for arterial oxygen unsaturation, we have done some studies during the administration of histamine which is known to be a potent vasoactive material.

Abstract: Histologische Untersuchungen an sagittal orientierten Celloidinschnitten menschlicher Augen (44 Falle) ergaben eindeutige Altersveranderungen am Ciliarepithel. Die ausgepragtesten Formveranderungen treten im Bereich der mittleren und hinteren Ciliartaler sowie in Oranahe auf. Da in diesem Bereich die Spannfaserzuge (vorn) und die Haltefasern (hinten) am Epithel fixiert sind, darf man annehmen, das die Altersveranderungen des Epithels im Zusammenhang mit den gewebsmechanischen Belastungen bei der Akkommodation stehen. In den beiden genannten Zonen treten am unpigmentierten Ciliarepithel Zellgruppen in Erscheinung, die sich aus dem Epithelverband losen und dem Ciliarepithel innen anschichten. Diese „Deckzellen“ werden mit dem Alter kontinuierlich zahlreicher und bilden in hoherem Alter haufig an verschiedenen Stellen eine geschlossene Schicht, die innerhalb vom ciliaren Cylinderepithel liegt und sich im Alter zunehmend nach vorne und hinten ausbreitet. Am Pigmentepithel treten in den gleichen Bereichen basale kolbige und zapfenformige Verformungen auf, die gegen das Stroma vorspringen und sich mit dem Mullerschen Reticulum verzahnen. Dadurch wird die mechanische Verankerung des Epithels mit dem Ciliarkorper verstarkt. Andererseits fuhrt die Ausbildung der Deckzellen zu einer verstarkten apikalen Verzahnung des Ciliarepithels mit dem Zonulaapparat. Die Befunde stimmen mit den gewebsmechanischen Vorstellungen uber den Akkommodationsvorgang von Rohen und Rentsch (1969) gut uberein.

Abstract: Ein biochemischer Index zur Diagnose der Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) wird aufgestellt. Er resultiert aus der quantitativen Analyse der Porphyrine im Urin von 18 Patienten mit PCT. Uroporphyrin (U), Hepta(7)-, Hexa- und Pentacarboxyporphyrine sowie Koproporphyrin (K) wurden bestimmt. Eine PCT liegt vor, wenn folgende Konstellation in der relativen Verteilung der Porphyrine auftritt:U 46–77% und 7 19–30%. Der Anteil vonU+7 am Gesamtgemisch steigt durch 7 um durchschnittlich 28±11% (\(\bar x\)+2s,n=18) an. Der Korrelationskoeffizient zwischen den Verhaltnissen 7:K und (U+7):K betragtr=+0,988;r=+0,994 zwischen (K×100/U) und (K×100/U+7) (n=18). Der regelmasige Anstieg des Heptacarboxyporphyrins ist spezifisch und signifikant fur die PCT. Er wird bei anderen primaren Porphyrien und sekundaren Porphyrinurien nicht gefunden.

Abstract: 1. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde untersucht, ob fur die Fetteinlagerung in die Leber durch Alkoholzufuhr vorwiegend eine Neusynthese von Fettsauren als Folge von Stoffwechselanderungen in der Leber durch die Alkoholoxydation selbst verantwortlich ist oder eine Mobilisierung von Fettsauren aus dem peripheren Fettgewebe. Zu diesem Zweck wurde der Einflus von Athanol auf den Gehalt an Metaboliten und Coenzymen des energieliefernden Stoffwechsels sowie von Triglyceriden in der Leber von Ratten bestimmt, bei denen die Alkoholoxydation normal oder durch Futterung einer proteinarmen Kost stark eingeschrankt war. 2. Alkohol fuhrt bei normal ernahrten Ratten in kurzer Zeit zu einer deutlichen Zunahme der Reduktion des cytoplasmatischen NAD-Systems der Leber, gemessen an den Quotienten Lactat/Pyruvat undα-Glycerophosphat/Dihydroxyacetonphosphat. Der Reduktionsgrad des mitochondrialen NAD-Systems nimmt, gemessen an dem Quotientenβ-Hydroxybutyrat/Acetoacetat nach Alkoholzufuhr initial weniger ausgepragt zu. Er steigt jedoch, im Gegensatz zu dem des cytoplasmatischen NAD-Systems, mit der Dauer der Alkoholeinwirkung weiter an. Der Quotient NADH/NAD, der sich aus dem Gehalt der Leber an NADH und NAD berechnet, nimmt unter Alkohol ebenfalls zu. 3. Der Triglyceridgehalt der Leber steigt unter Athanoleinwirkung bei normal ernahrten Ratten innerhalb von 12 Std auf das 4fache des Ausgangswertes an. Der Spiegel der Ketokorperβ-Hydroxybutyrat und Acetoacetat nimmt in der Leber und im Blut in Gegenwart von Alkohol kontinuierlich zu. 4. Bei proteinarm ernahrten Tieren bleibt infolge der stark verminderten Oxydationskapazitat fur Alkohol die Zunahme der Reduktion des cytoplasmatischen NAD-Systems nach Alkoholzufuhr aus, gemessen an den Quotienten Lactat/Pyruvat undα-Glycerophosphat/Dihydroxyacetonphosphat. Die Triglycerideinlagerung in die Leber ist dagegen noch ausgepragter als bei den normal ernahrten Kontrollen. Auch die Konzentration der Fettsauremetabolitenβ-Hydroxybutyrat und Acetoacetat und der Redox-Quotient dieses Substratpaares nehmen in der Leber und im Blut starker zu als bei den Normaltieren. 5. Beim Menschen verhalten sich die Redox-Quotienten Lactat/Pyruvat undβ-Hydroxybutyrat/Acetoacetat im Blut nach einmaliger oraler Alkoholgabe analog den bei den Tierversuchen beobachteten Veranderungen. 6. Aus den Ergebnissen wird geschlossen, das die Fettsauren fur die vermehrte Triglycerideinlagerung in die Leber nach akuter Alkoholgabe vorweigend extrahepatischen Ursprungs sind. Die Fetteinlagerung ist weitgehend unabhangig von Stoffwechselanderungen in der Leber durch die Alkoholoxydation selbst.
