Abstract: The inner shelf platform off North Eleuthera consists of a series of terraces at 6 m, 8 m, 20 m, and 35 m depth, respectively. The boundary between 6 and 8 m terraces is marked by a near continuous reef ridge, landward and seaward of which isolated reef structures are found. Reefs are aggregates of pillar structures, which in turn are composed of columnar, club-shaped or mushroom-shaped pillars of corals. The dominant primary framebuilder above 3 m depth isAcropora palmata; below corals of the generaMontastrea andDiploria, Porites astreoides andP. porites also contribute to the frame, as does the hydrozoanMillepora. The secondary framebuilders start developing and changing the shape of the frame as soon as they find suitable substrates; most important are coralline red algae, which encrust internal and external surfaces, but also may fuse the components of the frame; other organisms just add to the frame. In contrast boring and rasping organisms destroy the frame. Constructing or destructing organisms were found living on every surface, external or internal, accreting or diminishing.

Abstract: The effect of temperature on the duration of embryogenesis, especially on the embryonic diapause of Ephemerella ignita, was investigated in the natural environment and in laboratory experiments. Morphogenesis is blocked by diapause in developmental stage 10 (embryo nearly fully developed, pigmented eye anlagen, no dorsal closure). Diapause is terminated within 12 months only at comparatively low temperatures (from ≦1° C to the range of 13.3 to 16.0° C). Comparatively high temperatures (7.2 and 13.3° C) in the days preceding developmental stage 10 cause an extension of diapause. Stage 4 (polar germ anlage) is less sensitive than later stages to the diapause terminating effects of low temperatures.Postdiapause development to hatching takes place at temperatures ≦4.9 to ≧24.1° C. The developmental time is shortest at temperatures between 19.2 and 24.1° C. The calculated lower temperature limit for development is 3.9° C.Diapause is obligatory with only few exceptions. In field studies egg hibernation was found in nearly all cases. Abstract: Bei Acnekranken wird eine signifikante Erhohung des Lipidspiegels der Haut und ein signifikant schnellerer Ersatz der Hautoberflachenlipide nach Entfetten der Haut nachgewiesen. Die Seborrhoe ist dabei um so ausgepragter, je schwerer das klinische Krankheitsbild ist. Mikrodunnschichtchromatographische Untersuchungen zeigen, das bei Acnekranken die Triglycerid- und Squalenfraktion signifikant erhoht und die Cholesterin- und Paraffinfraktion signifikant erniedrigt sind gegenuber gesunden Vergleichspersonen. Auch diese Veranderungen sind um so ausgepragter, je schwerer das klinische Krankheitsbild ist. Bei schweren Formen ist zusatzlich eine signifikante Verminderung der Fraktion der freien Fettsauren nachweisbar. Eine Vermehrung der freien Fettsauren und Wachsester auf Kosten der Triglyceride, die beim Seborrhoiker zu erwarten ist, war bei Acnekranken nicht nachweisbar.

Abstract: The activity of migration inhibitory factor (MIF), present in the supernatants of specifically and nonspecifically stimulated human lymphocyte cultures, can be blocked by antiproteases of animal and plant origin and by diisopropyl fluorophosphate. MIF, partially purified by column chromatography and zone electrophoresis on polyvinylchloride is blocked in the same way. On the other hand, migration inhibition can be effected by some proteases, especially by cobra venom. These findings are discussed in terms of the probable protease nature of MIF.

Abstract: An frisch fixiertem menschlichen Material wurden elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen uber die Feinstruktur der Irismelanoeyten durchgefuhrt. Sie treten hauptsachlich im vorderen Irisblatt auf. Im Stroma finden sie sich haufig in Form von „Hullzellen“ um Gefase und Nervenstammchen herum. Sie sind hier auserdem in charakteristischer Weise mit undifferenzierten Bindegewebselementen vergesellschaftet. Die durch zahlreiche Pinocytosevesikel gekennzeichnete Zellmembran besitzt basalmembranartige Auflagerungen und submembranose Verdichtungszonen. 80 A dicke Filamente, ein ausgedehnter Golgi-Komplex und Cilien sind weitere bisher nicht bekannte Struktureigentumlichkeiten der menschlichen Irismelanocyten. Zahl, Grose und Elektronendichte der Melanosomen wechseln mit der Irisfarbung. Eine Innervation der Melanocyten wird nicht gefunden. Pigmentgranula werden auserdem in Schwannschen Zellen und sog. Koganeischen Klumpenzellen nachgewiesen.

Abstract: Protease activity in rabbit uterine secretion and blastocyst between 5 days 18 hours and 7 days 18 hours after mating was studied histologically and electrophoretically by film gelatin lysis. At definite times after the beginning of implantation, the uterine secretion contains two and the blastocyst covering at least one protease, all with different electrophoretic mobility. Digestion of the blastocyst covering begins on the seventh day post coitum in the area of the embryonic disc. The function of the proteases, origin of the blastocyst protease, and possible activation mechanisms of these enzymes are discussed.

Abstract: α-Hexachlorocyclohexan (α-HCH) has been shown to be a potent anticonvulsant when tested with pentetrazol. In the experiments reported here the question was examined whether or not the anticonvulsant properties of α-HCH are based on an acceleration of pentetrazol breakdown in the rat.

Abstract: Of the xenobiotic compounds which are known to induce liver growth some are substrates of hepatic microsomal mixed-function oxidase. The aim of the present study was to check on whether normal functioning of this enzyme system is a prerequisite for growth induction by α-HCH***, BHT, and phenobarbital. Several biochemical and morphological tests were used to determine the degree of hyperplasia and hypertrophy induced in rat liver by these drugs, with and without concomitant application of two inhibitors of microsomal mixed-function oxidase: SKF 525 A and CFT 1201.

Abstract: The effect of secretin infusion on choleresis was studied in 3 patients with cirrhosis of the liver and 6 patients with no signs of liver disease. All patients had undergone biliary surgery with a balloon-equipped T-tube left in the common bile duct. In the cirrhotics, resting bile flow was slightly higher than in the control group. The response of hepatic bile to secretin infusion was markedly higher in the cirrhotics (5 to 10-fold). In addition, in patients with liver cirrhosis, secretin caused a pronounced increase of bicarbonate concentration with an equimolar fall in chloride concentration in the bile, while there was hardly any effect in this respect in the group with normal livers. The marked stimulatory effect of secretin on duodenal juice production in cirrhotics observed in earlier studies on exocrine pancreatic function can be explained by the high volume response of bile flow reported here. Abstract: The trabecular meshwork of 5 rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), 4 saimiris and 8 rats was studied by electron microscopy, and the optic nerve heads were examined by light microscopy as well. The eyes were enucleated at various intervals (15 min to 80 days) after injection of 0.5–1.2 C. Hb units of alphachymotrypsin in the posterior chamber. The intraocular pressure was determined by electromanometry or the Schiotz tonometer. Electron microscopy revealed fine fibrillar material (zonular fragments) in the intertrabecular spaces, which had the same appearance as the remnants of the zonular fibers in the region of the ciliary body. These fibrils, which were about 100 A thick and up to 0.5 μm long, showed no regular periodicity. The distribution of these zonular fragments varied in different sectors of the eyes. In some sectors, zonular fragments were so numerous that the entire filtering area of the inner wall of Schlemm's canal was blocked. In rats, distinct pinocytotic processes could be observed within the endothelium of the inner wall, through which a part of the zonular material might be transported into Schlemm's canal and the adjacent outflow channels.

Abstract: By application of quasilinear response theory the spectral linewidths of two mode lasers near their threshold are calculated. Use is made of an adaequate fluctuation-dissipation relation. The laser is described by a fluctuation Hamiltonian with intensity and phase coupling of the modes. Incidentally the two modes' intensity fluctuation linewidths (given earlier) are rederived, and a formerly given result on the detuned single mode laser is corrected. For the phase coupled two mode laser we find a third threshold between the photon thresholds and, for large pumping, a linewidth factor 1/2.
