TL;DR: This article examined the nature of marketing capabilities across a range of firm types in Hungary, Poland and Slovenia and found that firms with foreign participation have been able to develop a sophisticated level of marketing capability with a resulting positive impact on financial and market performance.
Abstract: The industrial organisation and evolutionary economics traditions in international business and the resource-based view of the firm in strategic management provide a rich and related set of perspectives on the question of performance in an international environment. This paper draws on these perspectives to examine the nature of marketing capabilities across a range of firm types in Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. A number of key strategic capabilities are examined including market orientation, the time horizon of strategic decision making and positioning capability. The study finds that firms with foreign participation have been able to develop a sophisticated level of marketing capability with a resulting positive impact on financial and market performance. Wholly-owned subsidiaries and international joint ventures emerge as equally effective mechanisms for the transfer of marketing capability. Conclusions are drawn and implications from the research are outlined.

TL;DR: This paper introduces an approach towards a feature-based integrated product model that incorporates afeature-based representation scheme for capturing product semantics handled in the conceptual design phase and links early design with part and assembly modelling.
Abstract: Due to the highly complex and informal data that has to be managed in the conceptual design this early design phase still lacks of suitable computer support. Furthermore, existing approaches towards a computer aided conceptual design are insufficiently integrated with the downstream applications of the product development process. The paper therefore introduces an approach towards a feature-based integrated product model that incorporates a feature-based representation scheme for capturing product semantics handled in the conceptual design phase and links early design with part and assembly modelling.

TL;DR: A new possible mechanism for complex calcium oscillations based on the interplay between three calcium stores in the cell: the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and cytosolic proteins is developed.
Abstract: Intracellular calcium oscillations, which are oscillatory changes of cytosolic calcium concentration in response to agonist stimulation, are experimentally well observed in various living cells. Simple calcium oscillations represent the most common pattern and many mathematical models have been published to describe this type of oscillation. On the other hand, relatively few theoretical studies have been proposed to give an explanation of complex intracellular calcium oscillations, such as bursting and chaos. In this paper, we develop a new possible mechanism for complex calcium oscillations based on the interplay between three calcium stores in the cell: the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), mitochondria and cytosolic proteins. The majority ( approximately 80%) of calcium released from the ER is first very quickly sequestered by mitochondria. Afterwards, a much slower release of calcium from the mitochondria serves as the calcium supply for the intermediate calcium exchanges between the ER and the cytosolic proteins causing bursting calcium oscillations. Depending on the permeability of the ER channels and on the kinetic properties of calcium binding to the cytosolic proteins, different patterns of complex calcium oscillations appear. With our model, we are able to explain simple calcium oscillations, bursting and chaos. Chaos is also observed for calcium oscillations in the bursting mode.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented the analysis of iron loss in interior permanent magnet synchronous motor over a wide-speed range of constant output power operation using the information on local flux density variation in the motor components.
Abstract: The paper presents the analysis of iron loss in interior permanent magnet synchronous motor over a wide-speed range of constant output power operation. The analysis is based on finite element method and uses the information on local flux density variation in the motor components. The total iron loss is calculated by summing up separately the hysteresis, classical eddy current and excess losses for each element of discretization over one electrical cycle of magnetic field variation in all parts of motor iron. The results of iron loss calculation were compared with the results obtained from experiments on the actual machine.

TL;DR: In this article, a case of such tailoring is presented, where a set of standard procedures (SP) and standard documents (SD) is defined for small organizations considering their specific characteristics and the optimal use of suggested documents and the disposition of roles.
Abstract: Most known models for SPI (e.g. SEI CMM, ISO standards and other methods derived from those mentioned) are primarily suited for large or medium organizations, but with some tailoring they provide substantial support also for the SPI in small organizations considering their specific characteristics. In the article a case of such tailoring – the PROCESSUS model – is presented. The baseline of the methodology is the integration of the CMM and the ISO 9001 together with the ISO 9000-3. According to the integrated model and the study of different lifecycles, a set of standard procedures (SP) and standard documents (SD) was defined. Each standard procedure provides guidelines on how to perform related activities, who is involved, which documents are supposed to be used/derived within the procedure etc. The set of SP and SD is the essential help for SPI conduction – for the purpose of small companies the optimal use of suggested documents and the disposition of roles was defined. The SP-SD set is also described in the article. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

TL;DR: This paper deals with experimental methods for the identification of linear synchronous reluctance motor parameters and the proposed model, experimental methods, and determined characteristics are confirmed through a comparison between the measured and calculated results.
Abstract: This paper deals with experimental methods for the identification of linear synchronous reluctance motor (LSRM) parameters. A magnetically nonlinear two-axis dynamic LSRM model is derived. This model accounts for the effects of slotting, saturation, cross-saturation, and the end effects. The parameters of the obtained model are not constant. They are given by the characteristics of the flux linkages, thrust, and friction force depending on the mover position and the direct (d) and quadrature (q) axis currents. These characteristics are determined experimentally by a controlled voltage-source inverter employing closed-loop current control in the d-q reference frame. The proposed model, experimental methods, and determined characteristics are confirmed through a comparison between the measured and calculated results. Two tests are performed: a test at the locked mover, and kinematic control at low speed. The effects of cross saturation under dynamic operating conditions and the effects of slotting can be clearly seen in the measured and calculated results.

TL;DR: This paper is focused on qualitative and quantitative comparison of two distributed object models for use with Java: CORBA and RMI, and finds that because of its complexity CORBA is slightly slower than RMI in simple scenarios.
Abstract: Distributed object architectures and Java are important for building modern, scalable, web-enabled applications. This paper is focused on qualitative and quantitative comparison of two distributed object models for use with Java: CORBA and RMI. We compare both models in terms of features, ease of development and performance. We present performance results based on real world scenarios that include single client and multi-client configurations, different data types and data sizes. We evaluate multithreading strategies and analyse code in order to identify the most time-consuming methods. We compare the results and give hints and conclusions. We have found that because of its complexity CORBA is slightly slower than RMI in simple scenarios. On the other hand, CORBA handles multiple simultaneous clients and larger data amounts better and suffers from far lower performance degradation under heavy client load. The article presents a solid basis for making a decision about the underlying distributed object model.

TL;DR: In this paper, susceptibility measurements were reported for single crystals of the layered organic superconductor, and the value of the out-of-plane penetration depth was found to be 133, consistent with earlier results.
Abstract: ac susceptibility measurements are reported for single crystals of the layered organic superconductor $\ensuremath{\kappa}{\ensuremath{-}(\mathrm{B}\mathrm{E}\mathrm{D}\mathrm{T}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{T}\mathrm{F})}_{2}\mathrm{Cu}[\mathrm{N}(\mathrm{CN}{)}_{2}]\mathrm{Br}.$ The value of the out-of-plane penetration depth ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{b}(0)$ was found to be 133 $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m},$ consistent with earlier results. The temperature dependence of the in-plane superfluid density, with the value of in-plane component ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{ac}}(0)$ of the order of 1 $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m},$ is strongly linear in T, whereas the out-of-plane superfluid density varies as ${T}^{2}$ at low temperatures. The observed behavior is fully consistent with the one expected for d-wave superconductivity.

TL;DR: In this article, a symmetric and antisymmetric switching strategy is developed for synthesizing an output voltage vector from the appropriate combination of input voltage vectors, which enables unity displacement factor operation without current sensing and current control.
Abstract: Modulation strategies for a matrix structured direct AC to AC converter are developed. In principle, for a given set of input three-phase voltages, any desired set of output voltages can be synthesized by suitable toggling matrix switches. Mathematical proof that the direct AC to AC matrix converter can operate with unity displacement factor is provided by analyses based on the switching matrix approach. A symmetric and antisymmetric switching strategy is developed for synthesizing an output voltage vector from the appropriate combination of input voltage vectors. Unity displacement factor operation is achieved by using the combined symmetric and antisymmetric modulation strategy. This combined algorithm enables unity displacement factor operation without current sensing and current control.

TL;DR: The article presents the measuring methods, the used distance score calculations of the visualized speech spectra, and problems in the evaluation of the new multimedia tool.
Abstract: The development of an audiovisual pronunciation teaching and training method and software system is discussed in this article. The method is designed to help children with speech and hearing disorders gain better control over their speech production. The teaching method is drawn up for progression from individual sound preparation to practice of sounds in sentences for four languages: English, Swedish, Slovenian, and Hungarian. The system is a general language-independent measuring tool and database editor. This database editor makes it possible to construct modules for all participant languages and for different sound groups. Two modules are under development for the system in all languages: one for teaching and training vowels to hearing-impaired children and the other for correction of misarticulated fricative sounds. In the article we present the measuring methods, the used distance score calculations of the visualized speech spectra, and problems in the evaluation of the new multimedia tool.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of technological wastewater streams in a refinery and petrochemical complex was carried out, and possible connections between water outflows from the processes or process units and potential water consumers were determined.
Abstract: Analysis of technological wastewater streams in a refinery and petrochemical complex was carried out. Wastewater flowrates, temperatures, pH and pollutant contents were measured. Regarding the characteristics of the individual waters, possible connections between water outflows from the processes or process units and potential water consumers were determined. Possibilities to reduce the flowrate of technological wastewater with wastewater reuse or preliminary regeneration and reuse were found. The consumption of fresh water could be lowered by 11.2 m 3 /h, reducing the treatment system load and prolonging its residence time by 7%. The payback period for the changes proposed in the petrochemical plants is 6 months with annual savings of US$27 630. The payback period for the changes proposed in the refinery is 11 days with annual savings of US$15 500.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the tribological properties of commercially available rapeseed- and mineral-based oils, rapeseed and mineral base oils, and these base oils mixed with two additives for improving lubricity.
Abstract: The use of rapeseed-based lubricating oils has become more widespread in recent years. When these oils have been tested for their tribological properties, some imperfections have been found, especially in conditions of highfrequency and low-amplitude oscillating movements. In the present work, we compare the tribological properties of commercially available rapeseed- and mineral-based oils, rapeseed and mineral base oils, and these base oils mixed with two additives for improving lubricity. The results are compared for a wide range of contact pressures.

TL;DR: An assessment of the few existing benchmarking methods for real time systems will reveal that they are highly inappropriate and qualitative characteristics are much more important than quantitative measures.
Abstract: So far, performance measures for real time systems did not receive much attention. An assessment of the few existing benchmarking methods for real time systems will reveal that they are highly inappropriate. Taking a closer look into the fundamental issues of real time systems it will become clear, that for hard real time systems qualitative characteristics are much more important than quantitative measures. The major qualitative performance criteria are compiled. Systems fulfiling the qualitative aspects may then be compared on the basis of costs.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explain the inevitability of human specialisation, which tends to be accompanied by a lack of cooperation, especially of an interdisciplinary nature, by associating it with the practice of entrepreneurial management.
Abstract: Holism is a familiar concept, but it lacks a coherent definition in either theory or practice. This impedes common understanding and realistic observation and action. At the heart of the problem is the inevitability of human specialisation, which tends to be accompanied by a lack of cooperation, especially of an interdisciplinary nature. False holism may result in unpleasant surprises due to oversights. People who are able to avoid them tend to employ, even though tacitly, the law of requisite holism. This article seeks to explain this phenomenon by associating it with the practice of entrepreneurial management.
