Abstract: We study a stochastic predator–prey model on a square lattice, where each of the six species has two superior and two inferior partners. The invasion probabilities between species depend on the predator–prey pair and are supplemented by Gaussian noise. Conditions are identified that warrant the largest impact of noise on the evolutionary process, and the results of Monte Carlo simulations are qualitatively reproduced by a four-point cluster dynamical mean-field approximation. The observed noise-guided evolution is deeply routed in short-range spatial correlations, which is supported by simulations on other host lattice topologies. Our findings are conceptually related to the coherence resonance phenomenon in dynamical systems via the mechanism of threshold duality. We also show that the introduced concept of noise-guided evolution via the exploitation of threshold duality is not limited to predator–prey cyclical interactions, but may apply to models of evolutionary game theory as well, thus indicating its applicability in several different fields of research.

Abstract: Toxinotyping is a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-based method for differentiation of Clostridium difficile strains according to the changes in the pathogenicity locus (PaLoc), a region coding for toxins A and B. Toxinotypes are a heterogenous group of strains that are important in the development of molecular diagnostic tests and vaccines and are a good basis for C. difficile phylogenetic studies. Here we describe an overview of the 34 currently known toxinotypes (I to XXXIV) and some changes in nomenclature.

Abstract: In this paper, parameters of the Jiles-Atherton (J-A) hysteresis model are identified using a stochastic search algorithm called differential evolution (DE). The J-A hysteresis model's parameters are identified by DE in such a way, that best possible agreement is obtained between the measured and model calculated hysteresis loops. This agreement is furthermore increased by improving the J-A hysteresis model. The improvement is achieved by replacing a constant pinning parameter in the J-A hysteresis model with a variable one. Here, the variable pinning parameter is written as a function of a magnetic field. By DE identified parameters are used in the J-A hysteresis model, which is included in the dynamic model of a single-phase transformer. The effectiveness of the improved J-A hysteresis model and parameters identification approach is verified with experiments and simulations.

Abstract: High-power transmission capacity at low-energy losses, low noise emissions, high reliability, and ease of maintenance, as well as convenient cost-effectiveness, are required for industrial applications regarding variable electro-hydraulic supply systems. Only up-to-date principles regarding volumetrically controlled hydraulic energy using variable supply systems and appropriate control strategy have proven satisfactory for these requirements. The aim of the present work was to study the applicability of a low-priced drive concept using a speed-controlled induction motor in combination with a constant-displacement pump applied in a load-sensing control strategy. The suggested approach of the drive concept has been experimentally verified on a prototype of the drive. A hydraulic press-brake used for the machining of casting products in the automotive industry was taken into consideration.
