A group additivity approach for the estimation of heat capacities of organic liquids and solids at 298 K

Abstract: A group additivity method is described which provides heat capacity estimates of the condensed phase. The data base consists of 810 liquids and 446 solids. Group values for carbon in various common substitution and hybridization states and for 47 functional groups are provided. The standard error of estimation using this approach on this data base is 19.5 (liquids) and 26.9 J/ (mole K) (solids). This can be compared to typical experimental uncertainties of 8.12 and 23,4 J/ (mole K) associated with these measurements, respectively. Experimental uncertainties were estimated from the numerical differences obtained for a given substance from multiple independent literature reports.

Cash flow, investment, and investment opportunities: New tests using UK panel data

Abstract: The interpretation of the correlation between cash flow and investment is controversial. Some argue that it is caused by financial constraints, others by the correlation between cash flow and investment opportunities that are not properly measured by Tobin’s Q. This paper uses UK firms’ contracted capital expenditure to capture information about opportunities available only to insiders and thus not included in Q. When this variable is added to investment regressions, the explanatory power of cash flow falls for large firms, but remains unchanged for small firms. This suggests that the significance of cash flow stems from its role in capturing the effects of credit frictions.

Characterizing Provenance in Visualization and Data Analysis: An Organizational Framework of Provenance Types and Purposes

Abstract: While the primary goal of visual analytics research is to improve the quality of insights and findings, a substantial amount of research in provenance has focused on the history of changes and advances throughout the analysis process. The term, provenance, has been used in a variety of ways to describe different types of records and histories related to visualization. The existing body of provenance research has grown to a point where the consolidation of design knowledge requires cross-referencing a variety of projects and studies spanning multiple domain areas. We present an organizational framework of the different types of provenance information and purposes for why they are desired in the field of visual analytics. Our organization is intended to serve as a framework to help researchers specify types of provenance and coordinate design knowledge across projects. We also discuss the relationships between these factors and the methods used to capture provenance information. In addition, our organization can be used to guide the selection of evaluation methodology and the comparison of study outcomes in provenance research.
