Abstract: Psychophysiological evidence suggests that music and language are intimately coupled such that experience/training in one domain can influence processing required in the other domain. While the influence of music on language processing is now well-documented, evidence of language-to-music effects have yet to be firmly established. Here, using a cross-sectional design, we compared the performance of musicians to that of tone-language (Cantonese) speakers on tasks of auditory pitch acuity, music perception, and general cognitive ability (e.g., fluid intelligence, working memory). While musicians demonstrated superior performance on all auditory measures, comparable perceptual enhancements were observed for Cantonese participants, relative to English-speaking nonmusicians. These results provide evidence that tone-language background is associated with higher auditory perceptual performance for music listening. Musicians and Cantonese speakers also showed superior working memory capacity relative to nonmusician controls, suggesting that in addition to basic perceptual enhancements, tone-language background and music training might also be associated with enhanced general cognitive abilities. Our findings support the notion that tone language speakers and musically trained individuals have higher performance than English-speaking listeners for the perceptual-cognitive processing necessary for basic auditory as well as complex music perception. These results illustrate bidirectional influences between the domains of music and language.

Abstract: People engage in technology-assisted supplemental work (TASW) when they perform role-prescribed tasks at home after regular work hours with the aid of technological tools such as laptops, cell phones, BlackBerries®, and PDAs. Drawing from the technology acceptance model, we hypothesized and found that instrumentality beliefs (perceived usefulness) and organizational expectations (psychological climate) were positively related to TASW. In addition, we hypothesized and found that TASW was positively related to work-to-family conflict. However, time management (setting goals and priorities) moderated the relationship such that people who apply certain time management strategies may reduce the negative influence of TASW on their lives at home.

Abstract: Background: Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) is a chronic disease affecting about 400 000 people in the US characterized by increasing patient disability and burden on society. While there is no cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), pharmaceutical treatments exist that can limit the number of relapses a patient experiences, and slow disease progression. One such class of agents used to treat RRMS are the interferons: interferon-β-1a (Rebif® and Avonex®) and interferon-β-1b (Betaseron® and Extavia®). Patients must take these injectable medications regularly to achieve the optimal outcomes. However, patient issues and potential adverse effects of the medication may prevent the patient from taking the medication as directed and lower adherence. To date, limited evidence exists regarding the effect of patient adherence to interferon-β therapies on clinical and economic outcomes.

Abstract: Data on transportation costs are difficult to obtain. In the absence of good data, many researchers have turned to indirect measures of transportation costs constructed using matched partner c.i.f./f.o.b. ratios from IMF and UN data. We investigate whether these data are usable, by comparing their levels and variation to directly measured transport costs for the US and New Zealand. We find that IMF c.i.f./f.o.b. ratios are badly error-ridden in levels, and contain no useful information for time-series or cross-commodity variation. However, the IMF data do appear to reveal some meaningful cross-exporter variation that might be usefully exploited by researchers.

Abstract: Although previous studies have documented a significant risk of intellectual loss after treatment for childhood medulloblastoma (MED), the pathophysiology underlying this process is poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that (1) patients treated for MED in childhood have reduced volumes of normal white matter (NWM) related to their treatment with craniospinal irradiation with or without chemotherapy, and (2) deficits in NWM among patients surviving MED can at least partially explain deficits in their intellectual performance. Eighteen pediatric patients previously treated for MED were matched on the basis of age at the time of evaluation to 18 patients previously treated for low-grade posterior fossa tumors with surgery alone (mean difference, 3.7 months). Evaluations were conducted with age-appropriate neurocognitive testing and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging by using a novel automated segmentation and classification algorithm constructed from a hybrid neural network. Patients treated for MED had significantly less NWM (p < 0.01) and significantly lower Full-Scale IQ values than those treated for low-grade tumors (mean, 82.1 vs 92.9). In addition, NWM had a positive and statistically significant association with Full-Scale IQ among the patients treated for MED. We conclude that irradiation- or chemotherapy-induced destruction of NWM can at least partially explain intellectual and academic achievement deficits among MED survivors.
