The role of adherens junctions and VE-cadherin in the control of vascular permeability.

Abstract: Endothelial cells control the passage of plasma constituents and circulating cells from blood to the underlying tissues. This specialized function is lost or impaired in several pathological conditions - including inflammation, sepsis, ischemia and diabetes - which leads to severe, and sometimes fatal, organ dysfunction. Endothelial permeability is regulated in part by the dynamic opening and closure of cell-cell adherens junctions (AJs). In endothelial cells, AJs are largely composed of vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin), an endothelium-specific member of the cadherin family of adhesion proteins that binds, via its cytoplasmic domain, to several protein partners, including p120, beta-catenin and plakoglobin. Endogenous pathways that increase vascular permeability affect the function and organization of VE-cadherin and other proteins at AJs in diverse ways. For instance, several factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), induce the tyrosine phosphorylation of VE-cadherin, which accompanies an increase in vascular permeability and leukocyte diapedesis; in addition, the internalization and cleavage of VE-cadherin can cause AJs to be dismantled. From the knowledge of how AJ organization can be modulated, it is possible to formulate several pharmacological strategies to control the barrier function of the endothelium. We discuss the possible use of inhibitors of SRC and other kinases, of agents that increase cAMP levels, and of inhibitors of lytic enzymes as pharmacological tools for decreasing endothelial permeability.

Analysis and design of optimum-amplitude nine-switch direct AC-AC converters

Abstract: The maximum input-output transformer ratio, or output voltage ability, of direct AC-AC pulse-width-modulated converters is explored. An intrinsic limit, independent of the control algorithm, is found. A suitable novel converter control algorithm is discussed which achieves such maximum output amplitude ability and displays some interesting features. Finally, the opportunity to implement AC-AC converter control with the use of feedback techniques is considered, and a feedback-based control algorithm for the converter is proposed. >

State-of-the-art in privacy preserving data mining

Abstract: We provide here an overview of the new and rapidly emerging research area of privacy preserving data mining. We also propose a classification hierarchy that sets the basis for analyzing the work which has been performed in this context. A detailed review of the work accomplished in this area is also given, along with the coordinates of each work to the classification hierarchy. A brief evaluation is performed, and some initial conclusions are made.

Critical Care Management of Patients Following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Recommendations from the Neurocritical Care Society’s Multidisciplinary Consensus Conference

Abstract: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is an acute cerebrovascular event which can have devastating effects on the central nervous system as well as a profound impact on several other organs SAH patients are routinely admitted to an intensive care unit and are cared for by a multidisciplinary team A lack of high quality data has led to numerous approaches to management and limited guidance on choosing among them Existing guidelines emphasize risk factors, prevention, natural history, and prevention of rebleeding, but provide limited discussion of the complex critical care issues involved in the care of SAH patients The Neurocritical Care Society organized an international, multidisciplinary consensus conference on the critical care management of SAH to address this need Experts from neurocritical care, neurosurgery, neurology, interventional neuroradiology, and neuroanesthesiology from Europe and North America were recruited based on their publications and expertise A jury of four experienced neurointensivists was selected for their experience in clinical investigations and development of practice guidelines Recommendations were developed based on literature review using the GRADE system, discussion integrating the literature with the collective experience of the participants and critical review by an impartial jury Recommendations were developed using the GRADE system Emphasis was placed on the principle that recommendations should be based not only on the quality of the data but also tradeoffs and translation into practice Strong consideration was given to providing guidance and recommendations for all issues faced in the daily management of SAH patients, even in the absence of high quality data
