Abstract: Background: Dietary fibers are metabolized by gastrointestinal (GI) bacteria into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). We investigated the potential role of these SCFAs in β-amyloid (Aβ) mediated pathological processes that play key roles in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis.Research design and methods: Multiple complementary assays were used to investigate individual SCFAs for their dose-responsive effects in interfering with the assembly of Aβs1-40 and Aβ1-42 peptides into soluble neurotoxic Aβ aggregates.Results: We found that several select SCFAs are capable of potently inhibiting Aβ aggregations, in vitro.Conclusion: Our studies support the hypothesis that intestinal microbiota may help protect against AD, in part, by supporting the generation of select SCFAs, which interfere with the formation of toxic soluble Aβ aggregates.

Abstract: We consider super-critical accretion with angular momentum onto stellar-mass black holes as a possible mechanism for growing billion-solar-mass black holes from light seeds at early times. We use the radiatively inefficient ''slim disk'' solution—advective, optically thick flows that generalize the standard geometrically thin disk model—to show how mildly super-Eddington intermittent accretion may significantly ease the problem of assembling the first massive black holes when the universe was less than 0.8 Gyr old. Because of the low radiative efficiencies of slim disks around non-rotating as well as rapidly rotating black holes, the mass e-folding timescale in this regime is nearly independent of the spin parameter. The conditions that may lead to super-critical growth in the early universe are briefly discussed.

Abstract: PURPOSE: Germ cell ovarian tumors are curable. The possible sequelae of chemotherapy on long-term survivors are still unknown, but these patients may expect normal lives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome and reproductive function in a population of women treated since 1982. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1982 and 1996, 169 women with malignant germ cell ovarian tumors were seen (70 dysgerminomas, 28 endodermal sinus tumors, 24 mixed tumors, and 47 immature teratomas). Seventy-one had advanced or recurrent disease. Fertility-sparing surgery was performed in 138 (81%) women, 81 of whom received postoperative chemotherapy. RESULTS: With a median follow-up of 67 months, the survival rate was 94% for dysgerminoma, 89% for endodermal sinus tumors, 100% for mixed types, and 98% for immature teratoma. For women who were treated conservatively, the survival rate was 98%, 90%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. Two women had adnexal recurrences, and both received salvage treatment.
