Abstract: This paper considers the theoretical problem of eliminating harmonics in inverter-output waveforms. Generalized methods are developed for eliminating a fixed number of harmonics in the half-bridge and full-bridge inverter-output waveforms, and solutions are presented for eliminating up to five harmonics. Numerical techniques are applied to solve the nonlinear equations of the problem on the computer. The uneliminated higher order harmonics can be easily attenuated by using filter circuits in the output stage of the inverter. The results show the feasibility of obtaining practically sinusoidal output waveforms, which are highly desirable in most inverter applications.

Abstract: Estrogen regulates the amount of white adipose tissue (WAT) in females, but its role in males and whether WAT effects involve estrogen receptor-α (ERα) or ERβ were unclear. We analyzed the role of ERα in WAT and brown adipose tissue by comparing these tissues in wild-type (WT) and ERα-knockout (αERKO) male and female mice. Brown adipose tissue weight was similar in αERKO and WT males at all ages. Progressive increases in WAT were seen in αERKO males with advancing age. Epididymal, perirenal, and inguinal WAT weighed 139–185% more in αERKO than in WT males by 270–360 days of age. Epididymal and perirenal adipocyte size was increased 20% in αERKO males. Adipocyte number was 82–168% greater in fat pads of αERKO vs. WT males. Compared with WT, 90-day-old αERKO females had increases in fat pad weights (54–103%), adipocyte size, and number. Both αERKO males and females had insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance, similar to humans lacking ERα or aromatase. Energy intake was equal in WT and αERKO males, indicating that obesity was not induced by hyperphagia. In contrast, energy expenditure was reduced by 11% in αERKO compared with WT males, indicating that altered energy expenditure may be important for the observed obesity. In summary, ERα absence causes adipocyte hyperplasia and hypertrophy, insulin resistance, and glucose intolerance in both sexes. These results are evidence that estrogen/ERα signaling is critical in female and male WAT; obesity in αERKO males involves a mechanism of reduced energy expenditure rather than increased energy intake.

Abstract: SUMMARY 2-Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values of raw pork were determined by distillation and extraction methods and those of raw beef were determined by the latter method during storage at 4° and –20°C. TBA values of these tissues were low compared to values usually reported for cooked tissue from these animals in similar environments. There were significant animal differences in TBA values of beef and pork; there were significant changes in TBA values of these tissues during storage at 4°C, but changes during storage at –20°C were insignificant. pH and TBA values were inversely related. Mathematical relationships between TBA values of pork and beef during storage at 4°C. between TBA values and pH and between results obtained by the two procedures for determining TBA values of pork during storage are discussed. The extraction method is an acceptable method for determining TBA values and is easier to use than the distillation method. The TBA test has limited use for meat samples that have been frozen.

Abstract: To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

Abstract: It is often supposed that highly repetitious DNA's arise only as a result of unusual mechanisms or in response to selective pressure. My arguments and simulations suggest, by contrast, that a pattern of tandem repeats is the natural state of DNA whose sequence is not maintained by selection. The simulations show that periodicities can develop readily from nonreptitious DNA as a result of the random accumulation of random mutations and random homology-dependent unequal crossovers. The lengths of these periodicities, and the patterns of subrepeats within them, would fluctuate in evolution, with the probability of a given pattern being dependent on the unknown exact nature of the crossover mechanism. Qualitatively, then, unequal crossover provides a reasonable and uncontrived explanation for the prevalence of highly repeated sequences in DNA and for the patterns of periodicity they evince.
