TL;DR: Two cases of sarcoid polyneuropathy were diagnosed by histological examination of the nerve biopsy, and the electrophysiological findings in both patients suggested a neuropathy of axonal type, confirmed by a morphological study of a sural nerveBiopsy.
Abstract: Two cases of sarcoid polyneuropathy were diagnosed by histological examination of the nerve biopsy. The electrophysiological findings in both patients suggested a neuropathy of axonal type, confirmed by a morphological study of a sural nerve biopsy by light microscopy and on teased-fiber preparations. The sarcoid granulomas were multiple, especially in case 2; they were sparse in the epineurial and perineurial spaces and absent in the endoneurium, whose interstitial component contained cellular infiltrations of scattered macrophages. Blood vessel changes were a constant morphological feature. The mechanisms that possibly contribute to the pathogenesis of the sarcoid neuropathy are discussed in relation to previous reports.

TL;DR: Bronchoalveolar lavage, performed on 15 healthy volunteers, enabled quantification and characterization of the alveolar cell populations, and found that among the smokers there is a tendency for the concentration of these cells to increase in the lavage liquids.
Abstract: Bronchoalveolar lavage, performed on 15 healthy volunteers, enabled quantification and characterization of the alveolar cell populations. The subjects studied were 8 nonsmokers (5 males, 3 females) and 7 smokers (6 males, 1 female). It was found that in the smokers the macrophages increased compared with nonsmokers, both in absolute number (419,000 vs. 138,000/ml; p less than 0.005) and in percentage (93.8 +/- 3.0 vs. 88.1 +/- 4.8%; p less than 0.02), causing a significant increase in the total number of cells recovered after bronchoalveolar lavage (471,000 vs. 163,000/ml; p less than 0.005). Lymphocytes and neutrophils do not significantly vary in the two groups, even though among the smokers there is a tendency for the concentration of these cells to increase in the lavage liquids. The importance of the data obtained from healthy subjects lies in the possibility thus afforded of having reference values for the study of various lung pathologies with bronchoalveolar lavage.

TL;DR: The preliminary results suggest that different fashions of alcohol abuse may be associated with different reactivity of the endogenous opioid system, including B-Endorphin plasma levels.
Abstract: Two groups of alcohol addicts (total of 14 subjects), were submitted to Traditional Manual Acupuncture and pituitary hormone plasma levels, including B-Endorphin (B-EP), were measured in basal condition and after 1, 5, 20 and 60 minutes from needle withdrawal. Group A patients had a polarity towards negative affective tone presenting signs of dysphoria while group B was composed of the so-called "social drinkers". No difference existed in basal hormonal values, except slightly elevated plasma B-EP levels in group A. No significant responses to TMA were recorded in plasma ACTH, Cortisol, Prolactin or GH levels in groups A and B. Social drinkers showed an increase of B-EP plasma levels in response to TMA (128 +/- 62.1%, mean +/- SD) which on the contrary was absent in dysphoric alcoholics (2.8 +/- 38.6%, p less than 0.01). The same was true for B-Lipotropin plasma levels. These preliminary results suggest that different fashions of alcohol abuse may be associated with different reactivity of the endogenous opioid system. Language: en

TL;DR: Authors examine the most actual radiologic techniques for the investigation of pleura and chest wall and diagnostic possibilities of echography and CT in the evaluation of abnormal findings in these regions.
Abstract: Authors examine the most actual radiologic techniques for the investigation of pleura and chest wall. Advantages of decubitus views in the study of effusion are considered; diagnostic possibilities of echography and CT in the evaluation of abnormal findings in these regions are analyzed.
