TL;DR: It was suggested, on the basis of other evidence, that the attacks by horseflies were probably responsible for the arrest in development and it was suggested that the milk supply from their mothers allows the foals to invest time in sleep, and in exploration of their physical and social environment.
Abstract: The development of the (24 hour) time-budgets of foals was studied as part of a broader investigation of the time-budgets of Camargue horses living in semi-liberty. Nine categories of activity were studied; resting postures (lateral and sternal recumbency, and standing resting), foraging, and postures related to movement and orientation (standing alert, walking, trotting, galloping and rolling). The process of development of the time-budgets as a whole was described by using a multivariate technique, correspondance analysis : variations in time-budgets were largely determined by age, but the environment intervened in mid-summer, when the process of development was slowed down. It was suggested, on the basis of other evidence, that the attacks by horseflies were probably responsible for the arrest in development. It was also found that for some individuals there was also a period shortly before weaning when development was slowed down. Foals developed time budgets closely similar to those of sub-adults (horses 1-2 years older than the foals) very soon (2-4 weeks) after weaning. The changes in the time-budgets involved considerable decreases in the time spent in the lying postures (e.g. lying flat occupied 15% after birth and 2% after weaning), and in movement and orientation (standing alert decreased from 31% to 5% in the same period) while foraging increased from 13% to 62%. It is suggested that the milk supply from their mothers allows the foals to invest time in sleep, and in exploration of their physical and social environment. After weaning, most of this time is spent foraging.

TL;DR: It is suggested that the afferent vestibular synapses of the type I hair cell are transformed during ontogeny.
Abstract: In the course of postnatal development in the cat, there is a decrease of about 93% in the total number of synaptic bodies (synaptic balls and synaptic bars) in type I hair cells. In type II hair cells, there is no change in the number of synaptic balls. Simultaneously, the length of specialized neuroepithelial contact increases by approximately 300% during type I hair cell maturation. Only the synaptic bars displaying a polylamellar ultrastructure persist in the type I hair cells of the adult animal. It is suggested that the afferent vestibular synapses of the type I hair cell are transformed during ontogeny.

TL;DR: A new technique in total parenteral nutrition, involving a deep vein indwelling catheter as a vascular access route, was applied to cancer patients in order to obtain a positive nitrogen balance, revealing a significant increase in the degree to which radiotherapy was tolerated by the patients when TPN was administered.
Abstract: A new technique in total parenteral nutrition (TPN), involving a deep vein indwelling catheter as a vascular access route, was applied to cancer patients in order to obtain a positive nitrogen balance. Various complete nutritive mixtures were administered; all were aseptic and apyrogenic; normonutrition mixtures contained 2000, 25000 and 3000 ml of solvent, while hyper‐nutrition mixtures contained 600 and 1200 ml of solvent. TPN (average duration 1.4 months) was used in 2122 cancer patients: 74.6% of patients underwent surgery, 15.8% had radiotherapy and 9.6% received only chemotherapy. A significant increase in the rate of operability of tumors was noted as a result of preoperative TPN, as well as an increase in the number of procedures involving extensive visceral resection. The results of a randomized study involving 81 patients with pelvic and/or abdominal irradiation revealed a significant increase in the degree to which radiotherapy was tolerated by the patients when TPN was administered du...

TL;DR: The maturing process of afferent innervation of the vestibular sensory cells in the cat was studied during both the fetal and postnatal stages, finding that the type II cells from the 36th day of gestation already have an innervation similar to that found in the adult.
Abstract: The maturing process of afferent innervation of the vestibular sensory cells in the cat was studied during both the fetal and postnatal stages. Although the type II cells from the 36th day of gestation already have an innervation similar to that found in the adult, it is not the same for the type I receptor cells. Only 75% have a complete innervation from the 7th postnatal day onwards. Most often, the formation of a continuous nerve calyx is caused by the fusion of the neighbouring membranes of the different dendritic elements belonging to the same neuron. Following the polyneuronal innervation of certain type I cells, numerous competition phenomena can be seen between the fibre endings coming from different neurons. The hypothesis that, during ontogenesis, type I cell innervation passes through a stage which corresponds to type II cell innervation is presented in the Discussion.

TL;DR: A suggested involvement of the axonal smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the non-granular transport of neurosecretory material in connection with (1) storage in distally formed granules, and (2) release via microvesicles is discussed.
Abstract: The intra-axonal organization of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum was studied in the neurohypophysis of rats during and after water deprivation. Parallel to conventional electron microscopy, the material was treated with a double impregnation staining technique specifically designed to contrast the intracellular membranous system. In conventionally stained ultrathin sections from severely dehydrated rats most axons appeared to be free of membranous organelles, whereas corresponding axons treated with the double-impregnation technique generally exhibited a highly developed system of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. In axonal endings, both techniques revealed a profusion of microvesicles in intimate relationship with tubular elements of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. In short-term (12 h) rehydrated rats, a similarly developed system of smooth endoplasmic reticulum was still observed at all axonal levels with both procedures. After 24 to 48 h of rehydration the tubules of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum exhibited, in double impregnated material, numerous dilatations which resembled the adjacent neurosecretory granules. In conventionally stained ultrathin sections, an accumulation of electron dense material occurred within tubules of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the more proximal axonal segments, while in the more terminal segments, which contained numerous elongated granules, membrane continuity was frequently observed between newly formed granules and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. After 7 days of rehydration the general pattern of the axonal smooth endoplasmic reticulum was comparable to that in untreated rats. These results are discussed in the light of a suggested involvement of the axonal smooth endoplasmic reticulum in the non-granular transport of neurosecretory material in connection with (1) storage in distally formed granules, and (2) release via microvesicles.

Abstract: New porous vitroceramic materials have been prepared by the controlled crystallization of calcium aluminophosphate foam glasses for use in prosthetic bone replacement. The technique of elaboration was developed using DTA measurements. A study was made of their principal properties: porosity, average pore diameter, interconnections between the pores and mechanical characteristics. The biological results are also briefly described.

TL;DR: During a 14-year period, 607 obstructive lesions of supraaortic vessels originating from the aortic arch in 506 patients were submitted to arterial reconstruction, resulting in a “aorti dome syndrome” among 28 patients, which has been demonstrated for follow-up periods of from 1 to 14 years.
Abstract: During a 14-year period, 607 obstructive lesions of supraaortic vessels originating from the aortic arch in 506 patients were submitted to arterial reconstruction. Among these, 28 patients presented multiple proximal aortic arch lesions associated with extensive aortic involvement—an “aortic dome syndrome.” Transsternal revascularization procedures were performed in 28 patients, including 7 in whom endarterectomy of the aortic dome was done under hypothermic circulatory arrest. In addition, in 11 patients, multiple bypass grafts were constructed from the ascending aorta, and in 10 other patients, sequential great vessel endarterectomies were performed, with transposition of the left common carotid artery in 5 patients. Twenty-four of the 27 survivors are asymptomatic at an average of 6.9 years postoperatively. Progressive atherosclerosis in distal lesions has been observed in 2 patients, and late mortality has occurred in 5 others. Long-term arterial patency has been demonstrated for follow-up periods of from 1 to 14 years.

TL;DR: A structure theorem for simple ω-semigroups was established by Kocin [7] and a related structure theorem was proved by Munn [10] as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An inverse semigroup whose idempotents form an ω-chain e 0 > e 1 > e 2 > … is called briefly an ω-semigroup. A structure theorem for simple ω-semigroups was established by Kocin [7]; a related structure theorem for simple, and also general, ω-semigroups was proved by Munn [10]. These results represent an extension of the structure theorem for bisimple a ω-semigroups due to Reilly [14].

TL;DR: The stimulation of the crista ampullaris of the lateral canal by a short ampullopetal liquid flux produces on the pre-ganglionic vestibular fibres the appearance of a bimodal action potential.
Abstract: The stimulation of the crista ampullaris of the lateral canal by a short ampullopetal liquid flux produces on the pre-ganglionic vestibular fibres the appearance of a bimodal action potential. The amplitude of this action potential increases with the intensity of the stimulation. This stimulation also provokes the birth of an evoked potential at the level of the vestibular nuclei as well as an ocular jerk.
