TL;DR: Somatic cell hybrids are used to show that N-myc is normally localized on the distal short arm of chromosome 2, and in situ hybridization localizes amplified N- myc in neuroblastoma cells to homogeneously staining regions (HSRs) on different chromosomes.
Abstract: Cellular oncogenes comprise a class of genes whose aberrant expression or function may be involved in the development of tumours1. Indeed, several naturally occurring animal and human tumours are associated with consistent alterations in the structure or genomic position of particular cellular oncogenes2–4. Recently, we isolated a DNA segment having limited similarity to c-myc (termed N-myc) from a human neuroblastoma cell line5. Although N-myc was present as a single copy in normal cells, it was selectively amplified up to 140-fold in tumour cells from human neuroblastomas5. Now, we have used somatic cell hybrids to show that N-myc is normally localized on the distal short arm of chromosome 2, and in situ hybridization to localize N-myc to chromosome 2p23–24. Further, in situ hybridization localizes amplified N-myc in neuroblastoma cells to homogeneously staining regions (HSRs) on different chromosomes. Thus, our results suggest that amplification and translocation of N-myc may be interrelated processes associated with human neuroblastoma, and demonstrate that lhe site of N-myc amplification is quite variable and bears no apparent relationship to either the normal single-copy locus or recognized sites of non-random chromosome alteration in human neuroblastoma.

Abstract: Studied the effects of different kinds of similarity between social groups on ingroup favouritism using a modified replication of an experiment by Turner (1978). Instead of replicating the results of Turner, the data showed just the opposite. They are discussed within the framework of social identity theory.

TL;DR: In this article, the morphological development of citric acid producing Aspergillus niger immobilized in Ca-alginate and K-carrageenan was studied.
Abstract: The morphological development of citric acid producing Aspergillus niger immobilized in Ca-alginate and K-carrageenan was studied. The fungus normally developed a dense mycelium layer below and on the gel bead surfaces so that substrate and oxygen in this area had direct contact with mycelia. By this way mycelia are not only immobilized by entrapment but also in a “pellet-like” matter. Limitation of the nitrogen source induces a more interior mycelium growth, and outgrowing of free cells was minimized. In sucrose media no effect on the particle stability was observed whereas the application of potassium acetate as substrate caused the complete dissolving of the matrices.

TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis of Leask and Schulten, that molecular magnetic field sensitivity is the basis of animals' magnetic field detection.
Abstract: The influence of 50% decrease and increase of the earth magnetic field on the activity of the enzymes hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) and N-acetyl-serotonintransferase (NAT) is proved in vivo and in vitro. NAT and HIOMT catalyse the melatonin biosynthesis in the pineal gland and in the retina. Our results support the hypothesis of Leask and Schulten, that molecular magnetic field sensitivity is the basis of animals' magnetic field detection.

TL;DR: The spores of Aspergillus niger were entrapped in calcium-alginate beads and precultivated in growth media with various amounts of nitrogen and an optimum of acid formation and yield was observed after the precultivation with 100–200 mg/l NH4NO3.
Abstract: The spores of Aspergillus niger were entrapped in calcium-alginate beads and precultivated in growth media with various amounts of nitrogen. During the following citric acid production in shaking cultures an optimum of acid formation and yield was observed after the precultivation with 100–200 mg/l NH4NO3. The productivity of the immobilized Aspergillus was found to be 1.5 times higher than in the case of free pellets. The outgrowth of free mycelia into the medium could be provided by increasing the ratio particle-volume: medium volume, using a 1-l air-lift fermenter, by which means the productivity was increased twice as much as obtained in shaking culture.

TL;DR: The criteria for distinguishing this gene defect from othertypes of congenital ichthyosis associated with disturbed hair growth, as well as from other types of trichothiodystrophy which are not associated with ich thyroidosis are delineated.
Abstract: We report a 5-year-old boy affected with the Tay syndrome, and give a review of 12 pertinent cases previously reported under various designations. The Tay syndrome is a distinct type of congenital ichthyosis characterized by a peculiar anomaly of hair growth which has been termed trichothiodystrophy. The hair shafts are extremely brittle, and they show alternating light and dark banding when examined microscopically between polarizing filters. Other features of this syndrome are low birth weight, short stature, mental retardation, delayed neuromuscular development and other CNS anomalies, dysplasia of nails, hypoplasia of subcutaneous fatty tissue, prematurely aged facial appearance, hypogonadism, cataracts, osteosclerosis, dysphonia, and increased susceptibility to infections. The syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. We delineate the criteria for distinguishing this gene defect from other types of congenital ichthyosis associated with disturbed hair growth, as well as from other types of trichothiodystrophy which are not associated with ichthyosis.

Synthesis and Directed Polycondensation of Starch-Derived Anhydroalditol Building Units. Using regioselectively acylated derivatives of 1,4: 3, 6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (DAS) a series of different oligomeric terephthalic acid esters were synthesized and subsequently analyzed. By melting condensation of terephthalic acid dichloride and various dianhydrohexitol derivatives the preparation of certain polyterephthalates was achieved. Related 2,5-diamino compounds were obtained by a facile synthetic procedure from 1,4: 3,6-dianhydrohexitols, and their polycondensation with the bisdichloroformate of DAS led to novel polyurethanes. The polycondensates were characterized by their polymer parameters.

TL;DR: In this paper, all individual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) present in human milk and in butter were quantified and the approximate metabolization rates of the individual PCB components were calculated by comparison with the pattern of a technical PCB mixture (Clophen A 60).
Abstract: All individual polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) present in human milk and in butter were quantified. For calibration, a technical PCB mixture of known composition was used. The “real” total PCB concentration was determined by the addition of concentrations of the individual components. In human milk the calculated content was 50% and in butter 40% lower than values obtained by the usual calculation based on evaluation of some higher peaks of technical PCB mixtures. In addition, the approximate metabolization rates of the individual PCB components were calculated by comparison with the pattern of a technical PCB mixture (Clophen A 60).

TL;DR: There is no unique solution when the intracerebral sources of potentials picked up from the scalp are calculated and it may be useful to examine the neuronal mechanisms in principle underlying the generation of field potentials.
Abstract: For a long time, both the spontaneous waves of the conventional EEG and the so called event related potentials (ERPs; evoked potentials, contingent negative variations, readiness potentials, etc.) have been recorded from the scalp and related to the actual activity of a test individual. This empirical approach has proved to be profitable in clinical electroencephalography, for example. However, the correlation of brain potentials picked up from the scalp with the activity of test individuals not only has practical and methodological value, but is also important from a purely scientific point of view. In this context, the first step is to explore the processes taking place in single cells in the cerebral cortex or subcortical structures simultaneously with the occurrence of particular scalp potentials; the second step is to correlate the cellular processes with the behavior of a test individual; and the third step is to attempt to explain how certain patterns of behavior arise from known cellular mechanisms. However, with the knowledge at present available and with the recording techniques developed so far, there is no unique solution when the intracerebral sources of potentials picked up from the scalp are calculated (cf. von Helmholtz, 1853; Lopes da Silva & Van Rotterdam, 1982). In spite of this fact, it may be useful to examine the neuronal mechanisms in principle underlying the generation of field potentials. That may facilitate the progress of scientific understanding as outlined above.

TL;DR: These results do not allow general conclusions as to the value of LMWH fractions in the prevention of DVT, and indicate that these preparations just as ordinary heparin have a limited therapeutic range.
Abstract: In a randomized controlled clinical trial, the efficacy and safety of two low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) fractions in the prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) were assessed. One hundred twenty-six patients undergoing major abdominal surgery received alternatively 2,500 APTT units b.i.d. of two LMWH fractions or 5,000 APTT units b.i.d. of an unfractionated sodium mucosal heparin (UFH). LMWH 2 differed from LMWH 1 by presenting a lower mean molecular weight and a higher anti-Xa/APTT ratio in vitro. Patients were randomly allocated to the three groups, and the development of DVT was studied with the125I-fibrinogen uptake test (RFUT). The study was interrupted and the code broken prematurely because of otherwise unexplainable bleeding events. While no thrombosis and no severe bleeding were detected in the UFH group, three (7%) RFUT-positive DVT and two (5%) hemorrhagic complications occurred in the LMWH 1 group. No thrombosis and nine (22%) cases of severe bleeding were observed in the LMWH 2 group. Thus, the latter group differed significantly from the control group with regard to subjective and objective criteria for postoperative bleeding. Although these results do not allow general conclusions as to the value of LMWH fractions in the prevention of DVT, they indicate that these preparations just as ordinary heparin have a limited therapeutic range.

TL;DR: In this paper, electron microprobes were used to examine Mg-26 excesses from Al-26 decay in four Al-rich objects from the type 3 ordinary hibonite clast in the Dhajala chondrite.
Abstract: Ion and electron microprobes were used to examine Mg-26 excesses from Al-26 decay in four Al-rich objects from the type 3 ordinary hibonite clast in the Dhajala chondrite. The initial Al-26/Al-27 ratio was actually significantly lower than Al-rich inclusions in carbonaceous chondrites. Also, no Mg-26 excesses were found in three plagioclase-bearing chondrules that were also examined. The Mg-26 excesses in the hibonite chondrites indicated a common origin for chondrites with the excesses. The implied Al-26 content in a proposed parent body could not, however, be confirmed as a widespread heat source in the early solar system.

TL;DR: It is proposed that the potential changes in question be referred to as “DC potentials” (Caspers, 1974), and the following presentation will not be restricted to the origin of slow potentials encountered in definite experimental situations, but will deal with the problem on a more general basis.
Abstract: The occurrence of slow fluctuations down to 0 Hz in the spectrum of EEG waves has been known since the early days of electroencephalography, when the bioelectric activity of the brain was recorded by means of galvanometers (cf. Brazier, 1963; O’Leary & Goldring, 1976). However, such measurements were frequently distorted by uncontrollable artifacts due, for instance, to changes in electrode potentials or in skin resistance. As a result, the origin and functional significance of slow potential fluctuations in the cerebral cortex attracted little attention for rather a long time, and only a few decades later did essential improvements in the available technical equipment lead to more intense studies on the problem (cf. O’Leary & Goldring, 1964). The observed “slow” bioelectric phenomena were most often labeled “slow potentials,” “ultraslow oscillations,” or “steady (standing, sustained) potentials.” A common feature of all these fluctuations in the frequency range between approximately 0.5 and 0 Hz is that they can reliably be recorded only by means of DC amplifiers. To avoid confusion, it has therefore been proposed that the potential changes in question be referred to as “DC potentials” (Caspers, 1974). This term will be used also in this paper, and the following presentation will not be restricted to the origin of slow potentials encountered in definite experimental situations, but will deal with the problem on a more general basis.
