Abstract: The automatic processing of information was investigated, varying valence (positive vs. negative) and relevance (other-relevant traits [ORT] vs. possessor-relevant traits [PRT]; G. Peeters, 1983) of stimuli. ORTs denote unconditionally positive or negative consequences for persons in the social environment of the holder of the trait (e.g., honest, brutal) whereas PRTs denote unconditionally positive or negative consequences for the trait holder (e.g., happy, depressive). In 2 experiments using the Stroop paradigm, larger interference effects were found for ORTs than PRTs. This is due to the behavior-relatedness of ORTs. In a go/no-go lexical decision task (Experiment 3), participants either had to withdraw their finger from a pressed key (i.e., "avoid") or had to press a key (i.e., "approach") if a word was presented. Responses to negative ORTs were relatively faster in the withdraw condition, whereas positive ORTs were relatively faster in the press condition.

Abstract: Regulated cell growth results from the biological balance between soluble growth-regulating factors, their receptors and the elicited signal cascade on the one hand side and from extracellular macromolecular components and their interplay with membrane receptors on the other side. Proteoglycans have recently been recognized not only to play a part in providing shape and biomechanical strength of organs and tissues, but also to exhibit direct and indirect cell signalling properties. In this review, we discuss the direct growth-regulating role of proteoglycans with special emphasis on the lectican family and on the family of small proteoglycans with leucine-rich repeats (SLRPs). Indirect actions of proteoglycans by modulation of growth factor activities and growth factor distribution are exemplified by discussing the TGF-beta-binding properties of SLRPs and the interactions of core proteins of matrix proteoglycans with other growth factors. It is emphasized that the modulatory role of proteoglycans on cell proliferation cannot be separated from their participation in tissue organization in general, thereby explaining the diverse and sometimes contradictory reports on the effects of proteoglycans on cell proliferation and differentiation.

Abstract: PURPOSE: Cooperative Ewing’s Sarcoma Study (CESS) 86 aimed at improving event-free survival (EFS) in patients with high-risk localized Ewing tumor of bone. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 301 patients recruited from January 1986 to July 1991 (60% male; median age 15 years). Tumors of volume >100 mL and/or at central-axis sites qualified patients for “high risk” (HR, n = 241), and small extremity lesions for “standard risk” (SR, n = 52). Standard-risk patients received 12 courses of vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin alternating with actinomycin D (VACA); HR patients received ifosfamide instead of cyclophosphamide (VAIA). Tumor sites were pelvis (27%), other central axis (28%), femur (19%), or other extremity (26%). The initial tumor volume was <100 mL in 33% of cases and ≥100 mL in 67%. Local therapy was surgery (23%), surgery plus radiotherapy (49%), or radiotherapy alone (28%). This intermolecular annulation involving tandem C–H activation, cyclization, and condensation steps proceeds under mild conditions, obviates the need for oxidants, releases N2 and H2O as the byproducts, and displays a broad substituent scope.
