TL;DR: In this article, a probabilistic fomulation of the fundamental theorems of "limit analysis" is developed, which allows, with a very limited amount of computing work, the determination of a domain containing the probability distribution curve of the collapse load factor of any structure that satisfies the usual conditions for validity of the limit analysis, but has randomly distributed limit strengths.
Abstract: On the basis of a probabilistic fomulation of the fundamental theorems of “limit analysis,” a procedure is developed which allows, with a very limited amount of computing work, the determination of a domain containing the probability distribution curve of the collapse load factor of any structure that satisfies the usual conditions for validity of the limit analysis, but has randomly distributed limit strengths. Further improvements of the bounds thus obtained can be achieved by the equivalent of either the equilibrium or the kinematic methods of limit analysis.

TL;DR: This work demonstrates that the deficiency of α-galactosidase is caused by an X-linked mutation, but does not necessarily prove that the structural locus for this enzyme is itself located on the X-chromosome.
Abstract: A deficiency in α-galactosidase (α-Gal) activity–as measured aspecifically with the use of artificial substrates–is a regular feature in leucocytes and fibroblasts of patients affected by angiokeratoma corporis diffusum or Fabry's disease, a well-known X-linked trait in man1–4. Fibroblast clones derived from mothers of affected males exhibit either normal or deficient activity of α-galactosidase. This demonstrates that the deficiency of α-galactosidase is caused by an X-linked mutation, but does not necessarily prove that the structural locus for this enzyme is itself located on the X-chromosome.

TL;DR: Levels of ampicillin in serum, bile, gallbladder wall, and gallstones were found to be higher after iv administration than after oral administration, and S. typhi was absent from the biles, the wall of the gallbladders, and the calculi of one patient who later underwent cholecystectomy.
Abstract: Nineteen carriers of Salmonella typhi were studied; five had gallstones, and the others were documented biliary-tract carriers of S. typhi. One patient had already undergone cholecystectomy. A dose of ampicillin (1 g) was administered iv every 8 hr for 15 days. In all cases, cultures of stool became negative during treatment and remained so throughout the 16to 24-month period of follow-up. S. typhi was absent from the bile, the wall of the gallbladder, and the calculi of one patient who later underwent cholecystectomy. In a second part of this study, a single dose of ampicillin (1 g) was given either orally or iv before cholecystectomy to two groups of four patients each. Levels of ampicillin in serum, bile, gallbladder wall, and gallstones were found to be higher after iv administration than after oral administration.

TL;DR: Inhibition of the enzyme activity by several carbonyl reagents suggests an involvement of either pyridoxal phosphate or pyruvate in the catalytic process and the inhibitory effect of thiol reagents indicates the presence of ;essential' thiol groups.
Abstract: 1. The presence of S -adenosylmethionine decarboxylase in human prostate gland is reported. A satisfactory radiochemical enzymic assay was developed and the enzyme was partially characterized. 2. Putrescine stimulates the reaction rate by up to 6-fold at pH7.5: the apparent activation constant was estimated to be 0.13mm. The stimulation is pH-dependent and a maximal effect is observed at acid pH values. 3. Putrescine activation is rather specific: other polyamines, such as spermidine and spermine, did not show any appreciable effect. 4. The apparent K m for the substrate is 4×10 −5 m. The calculated S -adenosylmethionine content of human prostate (0.18μmol/g wet wt. of tissue) demonstrates that the cellular amounts of sulphonium compound are saturating with respect to the enzyme. 5. The enzyme is moderately stable at 0°C and is rapidly inactivated at 40°C. The optimum pH is about 7.5, with one-half of the maximal activity occurring at pH6.6. 6. Several carboxy - 14 C-labelled analogues and derivatives of S -adenosylmethionine were tested as substrates. The enzyme appears to be highly specific: the replacement of the 6′-amino group of the sulphonium compound alone results in a complete loss of activity. 7. Inhibition of the enzyme activity by several carbonyl reagents suggests an involvement of either pyridoxal phosphate or pyruvate in the catalytic process. 8. The inhibitory effect of thiol reagents indicates the presence of ‘essential’ thiol groups.

TL;DR: The ectopic pars distalis graft showed a general cytological disorganization and regression of the various cell types and its gonadotropic function appeared to be extremely poor.
Abstract: Removal of the pars distalis, homoiotopic and ectopic autografting of the pars distalis, and transection of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal link was done and their effect upon the cytology of the pars distalis and its gonadotropic functions was studied in the male green frog, Rana esculenta. Removal of pars distalis led to the regression of gonads and secondary sex organs. The gonadotropic activity of the pars distalis regrafted under the median eminence was comparable to that of the sham-operated control except that in the gland oriented at an angle of 180° the thumb pads were involuted. The normal functional activity of the regrafted gland can be explained by the contact re-established between the grafted gland and the portal vessels at the level of the median eminence as ascertained by injections of India ink. The ectopic pars distalis graft showed a general cytological disorganization and regression of the various cell types and its gonadotropic function appeared to be extremely poor. Transection of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal connections diminished the gonadotropic effectiveness of the pars distalis.

TL;DR: The helix sense of the L‐aspartate residues determined from the αCH and NH chemical shifts agrees with that obtained from ORD, and the stability of the helical copolymers to TFA addition shows a minimum at the composition of helix‐sense inversion for the L-glutamate:L‐as Partate copolymer but no minimum for the lefthanded D‐glUTamate: L‐ aspartate series.
Abstract: High-resolution NMR is used to study two series of benzyl-L- or D-glutamate: benzyl-L-aspartate random copolymers. The helix sense of the L-aspartate residues determined from the αCH and NH chemical shifts agrees with that obtained from ORD. The stability of the helical copolymers to TFA addition shows a minimum at the composition of helix-sense inversion for the L-glutamate:L-aspartate copolymers but no minimum for the lefthanded D-glutamate: L-aspartate series. The helix-coil transition of the glutamate and aspartate residues in each polymer is compared. For the D-glutamate: L-aspartate series no differences are found, indicating random copolymerization. In the L-glutamate:L-aspartate series significant differences between the transition midpoints are interpreted as resulting from irregular distribution of component residues along the chain.

TL;DR: It is concluded that Methallibure is a non-steroidal antigonadotropic compound and the important question about its mode of action has been brought into discussion.
Abstract: The influence of ICI compound 33,828 (1-α-methylallylthiocarbamoyl-2-methylthiocarbamoylhydrazine = Methallibure) on the pars distalis of pituitary, testes and thumb pads was investigated in the intact adult male green frog, Rana esculenta. Methallibure affected the gonadotropic basophils (particularly the B2 cells) of the pars distalis, which showed varying degrees of degranulation and underwent a notable decrease in their percentage. Within the testis this compound caused the arrest of spermatogenesis. The most uniform effect of Methallibure was observed in the thumb pads, which invariably showed regression of the epidermis and glandular epithelium. No histological changes occurred in the thyroid and adrenal glands and the B1 and A1 cells of the pars distalis remained unchanged cytologically. It is concluded, in concordance with the available data, that Methallibure is a non-steroidal antigonadotropic compound. The important question about its mode of action has been brought into discussion.

TL;DR: Methallibure blocks the stimulation of these organs by homoplastic pars distalis, which indicates that this compound inhibits the action of gonadotropic hormones upon their target tissues.
Abstract: Effects of Methallibure on the gonadotropic stimulation of the regressed gonads and secondary sex characters of the pars distalis-ectomized adult green frog, Rana esculenta, were studied Regression of the gametogenetic activity and reduction of oviducts and thumb pads are the eventual consequences of the removal of pars distalis Homoplastic pars distalis homogenates restimulate the gametogenesis and regressed secondary sex characters due to their gonadotropic hormone contents Methallibure in this case blocks the stimulation of these organs by homoplastic pars distalis, which indicates that this compound inhibits the action of gonadotropic hormones upon their target tissues
