Abstract: Forensic analyses of digital images rely heavily on the traces of in-camera and out-camera processes left on the acquired images. Such traces represent a sort of camera fingerprint. If one is able to recover them, by suppressing the high-level scene content and other disturbances, a number of forensic tasks can be easily accomplished. A notable example is the PRNU pattern, which can be regarded as a device fingerprint, and has received great attention in multimedia forensics. In this paper, we propose a method to extract a camera model fingerprint, called noiseprint, where the scene content is largely suppressed and model-related artifacts are enhanced. This is obtained by means of a Siamese network, which is trained with pairs of image patches coming from the same (label +1) or different (label −1) cameras. Although the noiseprints can be used for a large variety of forensic tasks, in this paper we focus on image forgery localization. Experiments on several datasets widespread in the forensic community show noiseprint-based methods to provide state-of-the-art performance.

Abstract: Induction of antigen-specific CD8(+) T cells offers the prospect of immunization against many infectious diseases, but no subunit vaccine has induced CD8(+) T cells that correlate with efficacy in humans. Here we demonstrate that a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus vector followed by a modified vaccinia virus Ankara booster induces exceptionally high frequency T-cell responses (median >2400 SFC/10(6) peripheral blood mononuclear cells) to the liver-stage Plasmodium falciparum malaria antigen ME-TRAP. It induces sterile protective efficacy against heterologous strain sporozoites in three vaccinees (3/14, 21%), and delays time to patency through substantial reduction of liver-stage parasite burden in five more (5/14, 36%), P=0.008 compared with controls. The frequency of monofunctional interferon-γ-producing CD8(+) T cells, but not antibodies, correlates with sterile protection and delay in time to patency (P(corrected)=0.005). Vaccine-induced CD8(+) T cells provide protection against human malaria, suggesting that a major limitation of previous vaccination approaches has been the insufficient magnitude of induced T cells.

Abstract: Climate teleconnections drive highly variable and synchronous seed production (masting) over large scales. Disentangling the effect of high-frequency (inter-annual variation) from low-frequency (decadal trends) components of climate oscillations will improve our understanding of masting as an ecosystem process. Using century-long observations on masting (the MASTREE database) and data on the Northern Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), we show that in the last 60 years both high-frequency summer and spring NAO, and low-frequency winter NAO components are highly correlated to continent-wide masting in European beech and Norway spruce. Relationships are weaker (non-stationary) in the early twentieth century. This finding improves our understanding on how climate variation affects large-scale synchronization of tree masting. Moreover, it supports the connection between proximate and ultimate causes of masting: indeed, large-scale features of atmospheric circulation coherently drive cues and resources for masting, as well as its evolutionary drivers, such as pollination efficiency, abundance of seed dispersers, and natural disturbance regimes.

Abstract: Intraperitoneal administration of some flavonoids (apigenin, flavone, kaempferol, morin, myricetin, naringin and rutin; 12.5-50 mg kg-1) significantly (P < 0.05-0.01) reduced small (28-69%) and large (83-134%) intestinal transit in mice. Other flavonoids (naringenin, silibinin, silymarin and taxifolin, 100-200 mg kg-1) reduced (23-41%; P < 0.05-0.01) intestinal transit at doses of 100-200 mg kg-1 while hesperitin, catechin and phloridzin (up to 200 mg kg-1) had no effect. This effect was antagonized by yohimbine (87-96%) and phentolamine (87-91%) but not by prazosin, propranolol, atropine, hexamethonium, mepyramine, cyproheptadine and naloxone. Yohimbine (92-96%) also antagonized the inhibitory effect of flavonols (12.5-50 mg kg-1) (P < 0.05-0.01) on intraluminal accumulation of fluid and diarrhoea induced by castor oil. By contrast, verapamil potentiated the flavonol effect. It is suggested that these effects, influenced by the structure of the molecules, are mediated by alpha 2-adrenergic receptors and calcium.
