Abstract: The production cross sections of the inclusive Drell-Yan processes W-+/- -> l nu and Z/gamma* -> ll (l = e, mu) are measured in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are reported integrated over a fiducial kinematic range, extrapolated to the full range, and also evaluated differentially as a function of the W decay lepton pseudorapidity and the Z boson rapidity, respectively. Based on an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb(-1) collected in 2010, the precision of these measurements reaches a few percent. The integrated and the differential W-+/- and Z/gamma* cross sections in the e and mu channels are combined, and compared with perturbative QCD calculations, based on a number of different parton distribution sets available at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Abstract: In the strain-driven model of nonlocal elasticity proposed by Eringen , the elastic strain is defined by a Fredholm integral equation in which the stress is the output of a convolution between the local response to an elastic strain and a smoothing kernel dependent on a nonlocal parameter. In the wake of this proposal, size effects in nano-beams were investigated in literature by adopting a differential formulation considered to be equivalent to the integral one. Recent improvements have however revealed that equivalence requires also the fulfilment of constitutive boundary conditions. Moreover, this strain-driven nonlocal elastic problem has been shown to be ill-posed, being conflicting with equilibrium requirements. A stress-driven integral constitutive law provides the natural way to get well-posed nonlocal elastic problems for application to nano-structures. The new integral constitutive law is formulated with explicit reference to plane and straight nano-beams according to the standard Bernoulli - Euler structural model. The solution procedure based on the stress-driven nonlocal law is described and adopted for the solution of a simple statically indeterminate scheme, thus showing effectiveness of the new model for the structural design of nano-devices.

Abstract: This paper aims to quantify the extent to which transport and other factors impact on residential decisions using Oxfordshire, UK, as a case study. It investigates the impacts of the current dwelling, household characteristics and alternative properties on the probability of moving. It also highlights the trade-off between access, space and other attributes in residential location choice. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the impact of transport and location-embedded amenities. A nested logit model is applied to estimate the indirect random utility functions of the intention to move and residential location choice based on stated preference data. The estimation results of the intentions to move model illustrate the impact of housing and household characteristics on the probability of moving. The estimation results of the residential location choice model quantify the trade-offs between transport, amenities and other factors.

Abstract: The results of a search for pair production of supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model third-generation quarks are reported. This search uses 20.1 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The lightest bottom and top squarks (b1 and t1 respectively) are searched for in a final state with large missing transverse momentum and two jets identified as originating from b-quarks. No excess of events above the expected level of Standard Model background is found. The results are used to set upper limits on the visible cross section for processes beyond the Standard Model. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on the masses of the third-generation squarks are derived in phenomenological supersymmetric R-parity-conserving models in which either the bottom or the top squark is the lightest squark. The b1 is assumed to decay via b1->b chi0 and the t via t1->b chipm, with undetectable products of the subsequent decay of the chipm due to the small mass splitting between the chipm and the chi0.
