TL;DR: The six pharmaceuticals showed a relatively limited acute toxicity, and carbamazepine and propranolol were inaccurately identified as having negligible risks under the current European draft procedure, which lead to discussion of the actual procedure on pharmaceuticals.
Abstract: In this study, exposure and ecotoxicity data of six human pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, clofibric acid, diclofenac, ofloxacin, propranolol, and sulfamethoxazole) were collected, including our own experimental data and literature data. From this data collection, the two-tiered European draft guideline on the environmental risk assessment of human pharmaceuticals was tested. Measured environmental concentrations in effluents from France and in effluents and surface waters from Germany were compared to the predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) in both countries. In a similar manner, predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) derived from acute data and PNECs derived from chronic data were estimated for each pharmaceutical and corresponding PEC/PNEC ratios then were compared in both countries. Globally, results demonstrated that all environmental concentrations (predicted or measured) for each considered pharmaceutical exceeded the 10-ng/L cutoff value, which requires the implementation of the second-tier assessment based on ecotoxicity data. Moreover, the six pharmaceuticals showed a relatively limited acute toxicity, and carbamazepine and propranolol were inaccurately identified as having negligible risks under the current European draft procedure. Such results lead to discussion of the actual procedure on pharmaceuticals, especially on the need of appropriate ecotoxicity tests.

TL;DR: In this article, detailed measurements of the electron performance of the ATLAS detector at the LHC were reported, using decays of the Z, W and J/psi particles.
Abstract: Detailed measurements of the electron performance of the ATLAS detector at the LHC are reported, using decays of the Z, W and J/psi particles. Data collected in 2010 at root s = 7 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of almost 40 pb(-1). The inter-alignment of the inner detector and the electromagnetic calorimeter, the determination of the electron energy scale and resolution, and the performance in terms of response uniformity and linearity are discussed. The electron identification, reconstruction and trigger efficiencies, as well as the charge misidentification probability, are also presented.

TL;DR: The L3 experiment as discussed by the authors is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators, which is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons.
Abstract: The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon with the entire data set of (963 +/- 7) x 10(6) tau decays collected by the BABAR detector near the Y(4S), Y(3S) and Y(2S) resonances.
Abstract: Searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon have been performed with the entire data set of (963 +/- 7) x 10(6) tau decays collected by the BABAR detector near the Y(4S), Y(3S) and Y(2S) resonances. The searches yield no evidence of signals and we set upper limits on the branching fractions of B(tau(+/-) -> e(+/-)gamma) mu(+/-)gamma) < 4.4 X 10(-8) at 90% confidence level.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the electromagnetic field can be accurately represented over a substantially arbitrary surface by a finite number of samples, even when the observation domain is unbounded.
Abstract: It is shown that the electromagnetic (EM) field, radiated or scattered by bounded sources, can be accurately represented over a substantially arbitrary surface by a finite number of samples even when the observation domain is unbounded. The number of required samples is nonredundant and essentially coincident with the number of degrees of freedom of the field. This result relies on the extraction of a proper phase factor from the field expression and on the use of appropriate coordinates to parameterize the domain. It is demonstrated that the number of degrees of freedom is independent of the observation domain and depends only on the source geometry. The case of spheroidal sources and observation domains with rotational symmetry is analyzed in detail and the particular cases of spherical and planar sources are explicitly considered. For these geometries, precise and fast sampling algorithms of central type are presented, which allow an efficient recovery of EM fields from a nonredundant finite number of samples. Such algorithms are stable with respect to random errors affecting the data.
