TL;DR: A series of studies operationalized the concept of rhetorical sensitivity first discussed by Hart and Burks in 1972 as mentioned in this paper, and a measuring instrument (RHETSEN) was developed and the attitudes toward communication held by several thousand individuals were thereby assessed.
Abstract: This series of studies operationalized the concept of rhetorical sensitivity first discussed by Hart and Burks in 1972. A measuring instrument (RHETSEN) was developed and the attitudes‐toward‐communication held by several thousand individuals were thereby assessed. RHETSEN was found to have sufficient reliability and validity. When a national sample of college students responded to RHETSEN, it appeared that their feelings about encoding messages were related to their various sociocultural backgrounds. When a large group of adult nurses took the test, their responses seemed associated with their particular professional duties and life experiences.

TL;DR: Neither the length of time the infant was nursed nor the need for supplemental fluids during relactation was related to the mother's evaluation of her experience, and most mothers stressed the importance of nursing to theMother-infant relationship.
Abstract: Relactation is resumption of breast-feeding following cessation or significant decrease in milk production. It may be appropriate following an untimely weaning from the breast or the hospitalization and subsequent separation of mother and infant. Relactation includes encouraging the low-birth-weight infant to nurse after the baby is able to suckle. Preparation for relactation includes breast and nipple stimulation, supplementation of the maternal diet, and occasional use of exogenous hormones. The baby9s willingness to suck is related to infant age at the time of relactation. Most babies older than 3 months are less willing to suck than younger infants. If the baby is of low birth weight, the length of time before the breast can be introduced also affects infant responsiveness. Three fourths of the study participants evaluated their experience positively. Neither the length of time the infant was nursed nor the need for supplemental fluids during relactation was related to the mother9s evaluation of her experience. Most mothers stressed the importance of nursing to the mother-infant relationship. Milk production was less often a goal and, when so specified, it was likely to influence the mother to evaluate her experience negatively and to result in difficulty in achieving a total milk supply.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the validity of interpersonal distance measures with respect to only one trait, comfort, control and privacy, and found that these measures were reliable and valid and the traits did have convergent validity.
Abstract: Prior research has investigated the validity of interpersonal distance measures with respect to only one trait — comfort. This study expanded the previous research by measuring interpersonal distance along the trait dimensions of comfort, control and privacy. In addition, measures were taken along three different measurement techniques: stop distance, silhouette placement, and a paper and pencil measure (CID). The results were interpreted in terms of a multitrait-multimethod matrix. Results indicated that these measures were reliable and valid and the traits did have convergent validity. However, all of these measures were uncorrelated with a disguised distance measure of interpersonal distance.

TL;DR: In this paper, sexual proceptivity, defined by measures indicative of the female's seeking mating opportunities, was determined to be much suppressed in 18 to 20 month old PVE females compared to either younger cyclic females or 12 to 15 month old females.
Abstract: Sexual behavior and some of its consequences were assessed in female rats which, with advancing age, had come to exhibit persistent vaginal estrus (PVE). Sexual receptivity, defined by the animal’s readiness to exhibit lordosis when mounted, was comparable across all ages evaluated. However, sexual proceptivity, defined by measures indicative of the female’s seeking mating opportunities, was determined to be much suppressed in 18 to 20 month old PVE females compared to either younger cyclic females or 12 to 15 month old PVE females. Mating disrupted the PVE pattern. The length of time animals remained out of estrus was positively correlated with the number of intromissions achieved by the male. However, pregnancy was not observed in any of the PVE females and examination of their ovaries and the responses of their uteri to traumatization provided no evidence of progestational responses in these animals. The behavioral data indicate that with continued exposure to the hormonal conditions of PVE there is a suppression of systems mediating the proceptive components of sexual behavior in female rats. It is suggested that changes in the concentrations of pituitary and/or ovarian hormones reported to occur as PVE rats continue to age may account for these changes in behavior.

TL;DR: In this article, an interrupted time series design was used to study the effect of a citation policy on the number of people being brought into the criminal justice system, and the predicted increase was found for only one offense.
Abstract: The use of citations in place of full custody arrest has generally been considered a liberal reform. It has been suggested, however, that because such a policy might produce a shift in police officers' criteria for arrest, it could result in an increase in the number of people being brought into the criminal justice system. An interrupted time series design was used to study the effect of a citation policy on arrest rates. The predicted increase was found for only one offense. The implications for the evaluation of citation arrest are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the workforce of a city police department is analyzed for a period in which an affirmative action program was in operation, and the goal of parity representation with the available labor force of racial minorities and women workers in the city was not realized in this police department.
Abstract: The workforce of a city police department is analyzedfor a period in which an affirmative action program was in operation. The goal of parity representation with the available labor force of racial minorities and women workers in the city was not realized in this police department. The problematic nature of "equality of employment" in city police agencies is further clarified by an examination of the employment situation in this department on two levels of explanation.

TL;DR: This article found that the Mach V factorial structure was more identifiable for white students than for Mexican-Americans and concluded that of several possible factorial summaries, a three-factor solution afforded the most succinct reduction of the data.
Abstract: 121 Mexican-American and 112 white college students filled out Christie's Mach V scale which measures proclivities for interpersonal manipulation and deceit. Analysis of responses indicated that the Mach V factorial structure was more identifiable for the white students than for the Mexican-Americans. It was concluded that of several possible factorial summaries, a three-factor solution afforded the most succinct reduction of the data.

TL;DR: However, despite the statistically nonsignificant aspect of these data, the data reflect with few exceptions positive changes indicative of the anticipated self-actualizing impact of growth group experiences as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: evidence in the literature substantiating the use of growth groups as methods of fostering self-actualization (Reddy, 1972; Shapiro and Gust, 1974; Taylor, 1976; Walton, 1973). In addition, there is some evidence in the reported literature of nonsignificant change by participants in growth groups (Butler, 1977; Yitter, 1977). Despite the statistically nonsignificant aspect of these data, the data reflect with few exceptions positive changes indicative of the anticipated self-actualizing impact of growth group experiences. The studies which focus on growth occurring within counselors-in-training (Butler, 1977; Eiben and Clack, 1973; Maynard and Long, 1976; Shapiro and Gust, 1974; Yitter, 1977) report inconsistent findings. While conjecture regarding these findings is varied, at least two authors (Butler, 1977; Yitter, 1977) speculate that screening applicants into counselor educa-

Abstract: An attitude toward mathematics questionnaire indicated no real difference in attitudes between two‐ and four‐year colleges. No differences in mathematical competencies, as measured by the Beckmann‐Beal Mathematical Competencies Test for Enlightened Citizens, existed between two‐ and four‐year colleges. The gain in mathematical competency due to taking one precalculus mathematics course was only 1.48 questions, or an increase of only 4.1%.

Abstract: The Bakongo tribe resides in Lower Zaire, the southern part of Congo-Brazzaville and the northern part of Angola. The term mbuta (plural is bambuta) means "old" or "older than oneself." It is a term of respect. The aging intervene in all the important life situations: marriage, witchcraft, magic, native palavers, etc. They have the authority and represent the tribe. The mbuta is an ideal that everyone likes to realize. Although the youth subscribe to modern western ideas, they still unconsciously fear the authority and the power of the aging.
