TL;DR: A computer science aptitude predictor was administered to students enrolled in a first technical course in computer science to determine potential for success, and revealed significant differences in the scoring between students who withdrew from the course and those students who did not.
Abstract: A computer science aptitude predictor was administered to students enrolled in a first technical course in computer science to determine potential for success. The study revealed significant differences in the scoring between students who withdrew from the course and those students who did not. The causes for the differences all related to the students' mathematical background: high school performance, previous computer science education, and the number of college mathematics courses taken.

TL;DR: The observed shift in the PAG-IEF FSH profiles to more basic (and biologically active) forms may represent a change in the composition of AP FSH that serves an important role in the maturation process leading to ovulatory cyclicity.
Abstract: Anterior pituitary glands (AP) were obtained from female rats at 5, 15, 18, 21 and 29 days of age, at the time of vaginal opening (VO) and during adulthood on proestrus. The multiple species of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) present within the AP were separated by the technique of polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing (PAG-IEF) and measured with the NIAMDD rat FSH radioimmunoassay kit. AP's obtained from immature female rats prior to VO contained elevated levels of total FSH as well as all of the species of AP FSH observed in adult rats (and hamsters). However, the majority of the FSH immunoactivity migrated to the most acidic portion of the gel (isoelectric point [pI] value=4.2-3.8). At the time of VO and during adulthood, a decrease in total AP FSH was observed. In addition, a shift in the relative proportions of certain FSH species occurred. The AP's of adult animals contained relatively greater amounts of more basic (pI values 6.0-5.0) forms of FSH compared with immature animals. When each of the AP FSH species isolated from adult animals was tested in a radioligand receptor assay, the most acidic (pI=4.2-3.8) failed to interact with the receptor preparation, while those with pI values from 6 to 4.7 were able to compete with [125I]-labeled FSH for receptor binding in a parallel fashion. Thus, the observed shift in the PAG-IEF FSH profiles to more basic (and biologically active) forms may represent a change in the composition of AP FSH that serves an important role in the maturation process leading to ovulatory cyclicity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered the effect of eight factors on computer science aptitude and achievement, including high school performance, previous computer science education and the age of the student.
Abstract: This paper considers the effect of eight factors on computer science aptitude and achievement. Aptitude is measured by a computer science aptitude test and achievement is measured by a final examination. High school performance was the first factor selected for both aptitude and achievement by a stepwise regression procedure. The high school mathematics background as well as any university mathematics background were the next two factors selected for computer science aptitude. Previous computer science education and the age of the student were selected on steps two and three, respectively, for computer science achievement.

TL;DR: Electrophoretic analysis of 11 different clonal freshwater Peridinium isolates shows that currently used morphological taxonomic criteria are conservative measures of relatedness and that the presence or absence of an apical pore is an important taxonomic feature.
Abstract: Electrophoretic analysis of 11 different clonal freshwater Peridinium isolates shows that currently used morphological taxonomic criteria are conservative measures of relatedness and that the presence or absence of an apical pore is an important taxonomic feature. Correlation of malate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase isoenzyme patterns with chromosome number variations among our isolates lends no support to polyploidy as a speciation mechanism. ARMORED DINOFLAGELLATES constitute an important component of freshwater phytoplankton, with one of the most prevalent dinoflagellate groups being members of the genus Peridinium. At least 44 diffierent freshwater species ofthis genus have been described (Huber-Pestalozzi, 1950). Historically, the different Peridinium species have been distinguished from each other on the basis of vegetative cell size and shape and on the basis of the size,

TL;DR: It was hypothesized that increases in self-actualization would be observed only after the completion of the learning period for Zen meditation, and all hypotheses were supported for the Inner Directed scale of the POI and supported in part for the Time Competent scale.
Abstract: Tested the hypothesis that inconsistencies found in research on the relationship between Zen meditation and self-actualization were due in part to the existence of a learning period for Zen meditation. It was hypothesized that increases in self-actualization would be observed only after the completion of the learning period. The Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) was given to 36 students of Soto Zen and 34 undergraduate students who never had mediated. Analysis of covariance adjusted the group means for differences in age, education, and sex. t-tests revealed that all hypotheses were supported for the Inner Directed scale of the POI and supported in part for the Time Competent scale. Results were discussed as supporting the hypothesized learning period for Zen meditation. Implications for future research on Zen meditation were discussed.

TL;DR: The taxonomic approach adopted provides support for a multiprocess model of illusory-contour perception, which posited the involvement of simultaneous contrast, linear effects, depth/completion cues, and feature analyzers in a four-factor model.
Abstract: Judgments of contour strength or saliency for twenty-four illusory-contour configurations were subjected to a confirmatory factor analysis. A four-factor model that posited the involvement of simultaneous contrast, linear effects (assimilation and dissimilation), depth/completion cues, and feature analyzers accounted for a substantial proportion of the variance in judgments of illusory-contour strength. The hierarchical addition of a fifth factor, diffuse illusory contours, significantly improved the overall fit of the model, but added little to the proportion of explained variance. The taxonomic approach adopted provides support for a multiprocess model of illusory-contour perception.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rotational transitions in a collision of Li+ with N2 at 4.23 eV (center of mass) have been treated in the infinite order sudden approximation while treating the vibrational transition in close coupling.
Abstract: The rotational transitions in a collision of Li+ with N2 at 4.23 eV (center of mass) have been treated in the infinite order sudden approximation while treating the vibrational transitions in close coupling. A number of new problems were encountered and solved. The solution of the close coupling equations for the long range ion–molecule interaction was facilitated by use of an asymptotic ending technique. Due to the high energy of the collision and the extent of the potential, as many as 10 000 relative angular momentum states were required. Solutions for the high angular momentum states were obtained by means of a Born‐like approximation. Intermediate angular momentum states were treated in the WKB approximation. Many low angular momentum states were obtained by solving the vibrationally close coupled equations, and a technique was developed by which it was possible to interpolate the magnitude and phase of the S‐matrix elements between relative angular momentum states, permitting the solution of the clo...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a hospital-based educational program that deals with sexuality and self-image, and set forth recommendations for service delivery for patients who are diagnosed with cancer.
Abstract: The diagnosis and treatment of cancer typically forces patients to cope with concerns about self-image, sexual identity, and sexual functioning. For such patients and their partners, the interface between health, mental health, and sexuality is critical. This article reviews the relevant literature, describes a hospital-based educational program that deals with sexuality and self-image, and sets forth recommendations for service delivery.

TL;DR: In this article, a method based on quantum-mechanical sum rules is presented in which matrix elements of displacement and the square of the displacement for a general one-dimensional oscillator are expressed directly in terms of the eigenenergies and the potential parameters.
Abstract: A method based on quantum-mechanical sum rules is presented in which matrix elements of the displacement and the square of the displacement for a general one-dimensional oscillator are expressed directly in terms of the eigenenergies and the potential parameters. Matrix elements of higher powers of the displacement can then be calculated through an exact hypervirial relation. Two important features of the present method, the rapid convergence and the result that successive approximations are alternately upper and lower bounds to the matrix elements, make the method useful in those cases for which accurate eigenenergies are known. Sample calculations for the quartic-anharmonic oscillator are presented and compared with matrix elements obtained by other iterative schemes.

Abstract: Oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) kinetics for submaximum exercise were compared in prepubescent boys (mean age ± SD = 10.2 ± 1.28 years, N = 21) and adult men (30.0 ± 5.64 years, N = 21). Standard open circuit spirometric techniques were used to determine VO2 and a bipolar ECG was used to measure HR. The kinetics of VO2 and HR were determined for each subject using graphic procedures. Subjects performed submaximum exercise on the bicycle ergometer at an intensity of 42 ± 1.3% (mean ± SE) of VO2 max for the children and 39 ± 0.7% of VO2 max for the adults (p = .07). There were no group differences in VO2 t1/2 (children t1/2 = 18.5 ± 0.75 secs and adults t1/2 = 17.4 ± 0.39 secs, p = .18) and HR t1/2 (children t1/2 = 11.4 ± 1.86 secs and adults t1/2 = 13.6 ± 1.66 secs, p = .38). These data suggest that children and adults do not differ in cardiorespiratory adjustments during low intensity exercise. This is in contrast to suggestions of other investigators that children have a faster cardiovas...

TL;DR: In this article, a case study of a large department at a midwestern research university examined the relationship between faculty performance in research, teaching, and service and faculty rewards, finding that teaching quality was a significant determinant of salary, though teaching quantity was not.
Abstract: Previous research that tested the relationships between faculty performance in research, teaching, and service and faculty rewards has been inconclusive for several reasons. This case study of a large department at a midwestern research university examines these relationships. In this department, teaching quality was found to be a significant determinant of salary, though teaching quantity was not. While research, as measured by publications and presentations, had a significant effect on one year's salary increment, it did not affect salaries over several years. Administrative service was found to be significantly related to salary, as was public service. Implications of the study for research and practical applications of the methodology are examined.

TL;DR: The Southern California Figure-Ground Visual Perception Test was administered to a sample of 100 adult males and validated through correlation with the Embedded Figures Test (EFT), and it was concluded that this test is a satisfactory alternative to the EFT in interdisciplinary research by occupational therapists.
Abstract: The Southern California Sensory Integration Tests have been developed primarily for the evaluation of children with learning disabilities, yet they have potential for the assessment of adult perceptual dysfunction. In this research the Southern California Figure-Ground Visual Perception Test (FGP) was administered to a sample of 100 adult males and validated through correlation with the Embedded Figures Test (EFT). The results of the investigation found a normal distribution of figure-ground scores in addition to a significant correlation with the EFT. The means, standard deviations, and ranges are presented. Further data on relationship of the FGP to age, socioeconomic status, and educational level are presented, as well as a detailed description of the sample. It is concluded that this test is a satisfactory alternative to the EFT in interdisciplinary research by occupational therapists and, as an instrument, it has some important advantages for assessing figure-ground perception in persons with motor impairment or who are under psychotropic medication.

TL;DR: In this article, a distinction between theory testing and theory construction is drawn between comparative criminology and comparative comparative research, and it is argued that attention by comparative researchers to this distinction will contribute to the resolution of one major methodological problem: that of research site selection.
Abstract: This paper draws on a distinction between two purposes of comparative research: (1) testing the universality of a proposition (theory testing) and (2) specification of a proposition (theory construction). These two distinct activities have been inadvertently mixed in comparative criminology thereby causing a great deal of confusion. The present paper argues that attention by comparative researchers to this distinction between theory testing and theory construction will contribute to the resolution of one major methodological problem: that of research site selection. We suggest that in light of the distinction drawn, the testing of the universality of a proposition is most appropriately done in research comparing Western and non-Western nations (“dissimilar design”). But comparative research aimed at the specification of a proposition is best conducted by comparing Western nations (“similar design”).

Abstract: This study examines whether the intended use of data obtained from student evaluations of university faculty biases the ratings. The paper reviews and critiques previous research done in the area. Previous studies produced contradictory results, but the results were confounded by several methodological problems. The research reported here remedied some of the problems in previous studies. The findings indicated that, while students are aware of the intended use of ratings as stipulated in written directions, different uses do not result in statistically significant differences in the ratings. Implications for the use of student ratings in the evaluation of faculty are discussed.

TL;DR: Using art to teach about health can be an effective and interesting way to promote health discussions and is shown how two "basics" can be used in an interdisciplinary approach to help teach children.
Abstract: There is a general trend in education today to stress “the basics,” — often defined as reading, writing and arithmetic. Health-related professionals have made a valid case that health may be more “basic” than any of these areas. And professionals in the arts have good historical evidence that art, dance and music are “basic” to human existence. Too often the different disciplines are pitted against one another to compete for money and prestige. The intent of this paper is to show how two “basics” can be used in an interdisciplinary approach to help teach children. Using art to teach about health can be an effective and interesting way to promote health discussions.
