TL;DR: Higher rates of copulation, greater male responsibility for proximity maintenance, and male initiative in sexual interactions early in pairing are consistent with a male reproductive strategy in which male‐male competition may be common.
Abstract: In tamarins and marmosets, long-term stable sociosexual relationships are formed between heterosexual adults, but these "monogamous" relationships are often formed in groups that contain multiple adults of both sexes. The patterning of interactions during pair formation may therefore be shaped by this demographic profile. We evaluated the development of sociosexual relationships in six captive pairs of Wied's black tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhli) during the 80 days from the initial day of pairing. Social behavior, sexual behavior and activity profiles were recorded. Social behaviors, including allogrooming, grooming solicitation, and intragroup monitoring calls, increased across the four 20-day time blocks. Males were more responsible than females for maintaining intrapair proximity during the first 40 days of pairing. Females and males were equally responsible for intrapair proximity maintenance after this time. The highest rates of sexual behavior, including copulation and proceptive open mouth displays, occurred upon pairing and then decreased non-significantly over time. The results indicate that sexual relationships in callitrichid primates are not dependent on the prior existence of a social relationship between males and females. Higher rates of copulation, greater male responsibility for proximity maintenance, and male initiative in sexual interactions early in pairing are consistent with a male reproductive strategy in which male-male competition may be common. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

01 Jan 2001TL;DR: In this article, Corcoran extended Tullock's model to a long-run setting, i.e., free entry, and found that under these conditions rents will be dissipated.
Abstract: The original work on rent-seeking conjectured that rent-seeking expenditures would completely dissipate the rent sought (Posner, 1975; Becker, 1968). Presently it appears to be accepted as a fundamental tenet in spite of the lack of knowledge of how such a result would come about (Demsetz, 1976; Foster, 1981). Tullock (1980) using a game-theoretic approach with a Cournot-Nash (C-N) response function showed that total expenditures can be greater than, equal to, or less than the rent payoff depending on the number of players and the marginal cost of influencing the probability of winning. Corcoran (1983) extended Tullock’s model to a long-run setting, i.e., free entry, and found that under these conditions rents will be dissipated. Tullock (1983) agreed in part, but still maintained that where marginal costs were rapidly falling or rising throughout, Corcoran’s long-run solution does not pertain.

TL;DR: This paper examined changes over time in implicit theories of intelligence and their relationship to help-seeking and academic performance and found that participants who exhibited a stronger incremental theory of general intelligence at the beginning of the semester subsequently reported greater help seeking during the semester.
Abstract: This study examined changes over time in implicit theories of intelligence and their relationships to help-seeking and academic performance. College algebra students completed questionnaires during the second week of classes and 2 weeks before the end of the semester (ns = 159 and 145, respectively; 61 students completed questionnaires at both waves). The questionnaires assessed entity and incremental implicit theories of general and math intelligence (beginning and end of semester) and help-seeking (end of semester). Results indicated that students had more incremental views of general than math intelligence. Further, their views became less incremental over the course of the semester; however, this decrease was greater for math than for general intelligence. Participants who exhibited a stronger incremental theory of general intelligence at the beginning of the semester subsequently reported greater help-seeking during the semester. Finally, students who had more entitative views of math intelligence earned lower course grades.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors test whether prior auditor's client tenure is associated with the audit fees paid to the successor auditor, and they find that audit fees charged by successor auditor varied positively with the length of the previous auditor's tenure.
Abstract: This study tests whether prior auditor‐client tenure is associated with the audit fees paid to the successor auditor. In the past, studying the association between tenure with the prior auditor and fees charged by the successor was problematic because of the difficulty in controlling for the causes of the auditor change. However, the collapse of Andersen in late 2002 led to a significant number of exogenous auditor switches. Using a sample of former Andersen clients, our major finding is that audit fees charged by the successor auditor varied positively with the length of the prior auditor's tenure. Given that the audit market is efficient, the observed positive association between current fees and prior auditor tenure suggests to us that successor auditors perceived higher risk from new clients having longer tenure with their previous auditor.
