TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between gender and the amount of social support from various sources is explored, and the results suggest that social support does have various beneficial effects on health outcomes.
Abstract: Social support has generally been found to have a positive effect on health outcomes. Recently, however, it has been suggested that the existence of these benefits is dependent on the source of support and the gender of the individual receiving the support. Specifically, it has been argued that employed males benefit from work-based sources of support while employed females rely on family or non-work sources. The present study tests this proposition while controlling for variables which may be confounded with gender in the workforce. Several health and satisfaction variables are investigated. The relationship between gender and amount of social support from various sources is also explored. Findings suggest (a) that social support does have various beneficial effects on health outcomes, (b) that gender has little bearing on the amount of support received, and (c) there are few gender differences in the effects of social support on health. Those differences that were found were in the opposite direction of what was expected.

TL;DR: Need for assistance with activities of daily living, availability of other caregivers, concern with cost, and adherence by the respite program to an established service schedule contributed significantly to the model distinguishing service users from nonusers.
Abstract: Four hundred fifty-eight family caregivers of Alzheimer's patients in Michigan were interviewed to identify factors associated with respite use Of these caregivers, 176 were using respite (users), 128 had inquired about the service but had not yet used it (seekers), and 154 had neither used nor inquired about respite services (nonseekers) Separate logistic regression models were evaluated to identify users versus nonusers (n = 458) and seekers versus nonseekers (n = 282) Need for assistance with activities of daily living, availability of other caregivers, concern with cost, and adherence by the respite programto an established service schedule contributed significantly to the model distinguishing service users from nonusers Caregiver burden, the presence of other caregivers, and the availability of transportation services made significant, unique contributions to the model distinguishing seekers from nonseekers

TL;DR: This study deconstructed the mechanical work production during barefoot walking in a segment-by-segment manner (hallux, forefoot, hindfoot, and shank) by isolating the forces acting within each foot segment through controlling the placement of the participants’ foot as it contacted a ground-mounted force platform.
Abstract: The human foot and ankle system is equipped with structures that can produce mechanical work through elastic (e.g., Achilles tendon, plantar fascia) or viscoelastic (e.g., heel pad) mechanisms, or by active muscle contractions. Yet, quantifying the work distribution among various subsections of the foot and ankle can be difficult, in large part due to a lack of objective methods for partitioning the forces acting underneath the stance foot. In this study, we deconstructed the mechanical work production during barefoot walking in a segment-by-segment manner (hallux, forefoot, hindfoot, and shank). This was accomplished by isolating the forces acting within each foot segment through controlling the placement of the participants’ foot as it contacted a ground-mounted force platform. Combined with an analysis that incorporated non-rigid mechanics, we quantified the total work production distal to each of the four isolated segments. We found that various subsections within the foot and ankle showed disparate work distribution, particularly within structures distal to the hindfoot. When accounting for all sources of positive and negative work distal to the shank (i.e., ankle joint and all foot structures), these structures resembled an energy-neutral system that produced net mechanical work close to zero (−0.012 ± 0.054 J/kg).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to evaluate oscillatory activity during a right hand finger-tapping task in four participants who were recorded at three different times (09:00, 12,00, 16,00) on three consecutive days (i.e., 36 total MEG sessions).

TL;DR: In this paper, the impact of the 2008-2009 economic crisis on the automotive industry in Czech and Slovak is examined, and changes in revenues, production and employment during economic crisis are compared between Czechia and Slovakia, and are analyzed according to ownership.
Abstract: This article examines the impact of the 2008–2009 economic crisis on the automotive industry. The uneven nature of the crisis contributed to the gradual shift in production from traditional core areas of the global automobile industry to selected less developed economies. In this context, the paper analyses the firm-level effects of the economic crisis in the Czech and Slovak automotive industries as two examples of automotive industry peripheries that were integrated in the European automobile production system and experienced rapid production increases after 1990. The analysis draws on unique data collected during a survey of 274 Czech-based and 133 Slovak-based automotive firms conducted in autumn 2009 and spring 2010, 98 company interviews conducted with automotive firms in Czechia in 2010 and 2011, and 30 interviews conducted in Slovakia in 2011. Changes in revenues, production and employment during the economic crisis are compared between Czechia and Slovakia, and are analysed according to ownership...
