TL;DR: The observed shift in the PAG-IEF FSH profiles to more basic (and biologically active) forms may represent a change in the composition of AP FSH that serves an important role in the maturation process leading to ovulatory cyclicity.
Abstract: Anterior pituitary glands (AP) were obtained from female rats at 5, 15, 18, 21 and 29 days of age, at the time of vaginal opening (VO) and during adulthood on proestrus. The multiple species of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) present within the AP were separated by the technique of polyacrylamide gel isoelectric focusing (PAG-IEF) and measured with the NIAMDD rat FSH radioimmunoassay kit. AP's obtained from immature female rats prior to VO contained elevated levels of total FSH as well as all of the species of AP FSH observed in adult rats (and hamsters). However, the majority of the FSH immunoactivity migrated to the most acidic portion of the gel (isoelectric point [pI] value=4.2-3.8). At the time of VO and during adulthood, a decrease in total AP FSH was observed. In addition, a shift in the relative proportions of certain FSH species occurred. The AP's of adult animals contained relatively greater amounts of more basic (pI values 6.0-5.0) forms of FSH compared with immature animals. When each of the AP FSH species isolated from adult animals was tested in a radioligand receptor assay, the most acidic (pI=4.2-3.8) failed to interact with the receptor preparation, while those with pI values from 6 to 4.7 were able to compete with [125I]-labeled FSH for receptor binding in a parallel fashion. Thus, the observed shift in the PAG-IEF FSH profiles to more basic (and biologically active) forms may represent a change in the composition of AP FSH that serves an important role in the maturation process leading to ovulatory cyclicity.

TL;DR: New superconvergence results for the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method applied to the second-order scalar wave equation in one space dimension are presented and used to construct simple, efficient, and asymptotically correct a posteriori error estimates in regions where solutions are smooth.

TL;DR: The present study suggests the contextual factors associated with forgiveness may be further differentiated by gender and that researchers should consider transgression, relationship, and intrapersonal characteristics when examining forgiveness.
Abstract: Given the voluntary nature of adolescent friendships, forgiveness of interpersonal transgressions has been identified as a critical aspect of maintaining these relationships. However, transgression forgiveness is related to a range of situational (e.g., transgression severity), interpersonal (e.g., friendship commitment), and intrapersonal (e.g., victim's empathy) factors. Data from 161 adolescents were used to examine the nature of the relationships between these factors and forgiveness and to examine the differential association patterns for adolescent boys and girls. Results for the overall adolescent sample indicated both situational and interpersonal factor associations with forgiveness (R 2 = .52, p < .001). Examination of separate female and male forgiveness reports indicated similar interpersonal factor associations and differential situational factor associations with female (R 2 = .46, p < .001), and male (R 2 = .60, p < .001) forgiveness. Findings suggest the likelihood of forgiving ma...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarize and organize the existing racial profiling literature and establish a strong conceptual foundation for future racial profiling research, identifying four issues that must be explicitly addressed in the conceptualization process of research on racial profiling: realm of activity, level of aggregation and unit of analysis, population of interest and characteristics of the incident.
Abstract: Racial profiling has generated a significant amount of social concern in American society. Yet little is known about the etiology of this phenomenon, in part because its defining characteristics have yet to be identified and conceptualized. In this article, the authors summarize and organize the existing racial profiling literature and establish a strong conceptual foundation for future racial profiling research. Four issues that must be explicitly addressed in the conceptualization process of research on racial profiling are identified and described: realm of activity, level of aggregation and unit of analysis, population of interest, and characteristics of the incident. These factors have methodological implications in terms of data collection, control variables, and methods of analysis.

TL;DR: This article investigated the role of neutral and ambiguous toys in three to five-year-old children's play behavior and understanding about gender and found that children did not categorise more perceptually salient (ambiguous) toys than less distinguishable (neutral) toys to their own gender.
Abstract: Developmental intergroup theory would predict that children develop fewer or weaker stereotypes about toys that have less distinguishable gender attributes than those that are clearly associated with a gender The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of neutral and ambiguous toys in 31 three‐ to five‐year‐old children’s play behaviour and understanding about gender Overall, children did not categorise more perceptually salient (ambiguous) toys than less distinguishable (neutral) toys to their own gender Colour was the most frequently used reason for the toys’ gender assignment The findings also showed that with age, girls’ play complexity increased linearly, whereas boys’ scores did not A play substitution scale measuring play creativity or maturity showed no gender differences The discussion highlights the role of perceptual salience in sex‐dimorphic toy preferences and behaviour and their application to educational issues
