Gait variability measures reveal differences between multiple sclerosis patients and healthy controls

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in gait variability between patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and healthy controls during walking at a self-selected pace. Methods: Kinematics were collected during three minutes of treadmill walking for 10 patients with MS and 10 healthy controls. The Coefficient of Variation (CoV), the Approximate Entropy (ApEn) and the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) were used to investigate the fluctuations present in stride length and step width from continuous strides. Results: ApEn revealed that patients with MS had significantly lower values than healthy controls for stride length (p < .001) and step width (p < .001). Conclusions: ApEn results revealed that the natural fluctuations present during gait in the stride length and step width time series are more regular and repeatable in patients with MS. These changes implied that patients with MS may exhibit reduced capacity to adapt and respond to perturbations during gait.

Should Women Count? A Context for the Debate*

Abstract: Much recent feminist geographical scholarship emphasizes the utility of qualitative research methods; yet, a significant proportion of feminist research in geography is quantitative. Geographers' engagement with the ideas of feminist theorists has shed new light on the relationship between epistemology, methodology, and objectivity, which in turn has facilitated a reexamination of feminist uses of quantification. In providing a context for the debate over quantitative and qualitative methods, we argue that each has a place in feminist geographical research.

Exploring Identity and Assimilation: Research and Interpretive Poems

Abstract: Indem traditionelle qualitative Daten und Gedichte prasentiert werden, sollen in diesem Beitrag die Assimilationserfahrungen einer indianische Frau mit ihrer bikulturellen Herkunft untersucht werden. Daten werden dabei auf dreifache Weise aufbereitet, jede mit unterschiedlichen Implikationen fur qualitative Forschung und fur an kunstlerischen Ausdrucksformen orientierte Methoden. Zunachst geht es um ein Tiefeninterview und um interpretative Kommentare zu diesem Interview. In einem nachsten Schritt wird ein forschungsnahes Gedicht vorgestellt, das die exakte Sprache der Untersuchungspartnerin in verdichteter Form nutzt. Hiernach folgen zwei interpretative Gedichte, die der Bemuhung der Autorin und des Autors geschuldet sind, die Essenz der subjektiven Erfahrung der Untersuchungspartnerin in literarischer Form auf den Punkt zu bringen. Starken und Schwachen jeder dieser Vorgehensweisen werden skizziert, und Implikationen, die mit dem Einbezug von Gedichten und anderen kunstlerischen Ausdrucksformen in den Forschungsprozess verbunden sind, werden diskutiert. Possible origins of high-T(c) superconductivity

Abstract: A mechanism to explain high-T{sub c} superconductivity, based on the double-well motion of the oxygen ions in such systems, is extended to predict T values of for (La, Ba){sub 2}CuO{sub 4} and Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}. This gives lower bounds on T{sub c} of 53K for the former and 44K for the latter. Since the second number, in particular, could be markedly enhanced by full allowance for the large amplitudes of the oxygen motions, it is argued that large T{sub c} values have a purely vibronic origin.

How consumers with disabilities perceive “welcome” in retail servicescapes: a critical incident study

Abstract: Purpose – This paper aims to extend understanding of the cues that customers with disabilities use to judge inclusion/welcome (or not) in interactions in retail stores.Design/methodology/approach – Critical incident interviews were conducted with 115 informants who provided rich descriptions of 113 welcoming incidents and 105 unwelcoming incidents. Interview transcripts were content analyzed to determine inductively the cues customers with disabilities use to perceive welcoming.Findings – Four primary situational factors explain to what perceptions of welcome/inclusion are attributed: service personnel; store environmental factors; other customers; and product/service assortments. Further, a disability becomes salient only when there is an interaction between these situational factors and consumers' disabilities.Research limitations/implications – The findings suggest an extension to Bitner's servicescape conceptualization in that it specifies that the assessment of an environment as enabling or disabling...
