TL;DR: In this paper, a mathematical model of a turbulent diffusion buoyant flame based on a number of simplifying assumptions is presented, which predicts the general characteristics of a free-burning fire in both the region where combustion is occurring and the hot gas plume formed above the combustion section.
Abstract: A mathematical model of a turbulent diffusion buoyant flame based on a number of simplifying assumptions is presented. The model predicts the general characteristics of a free-burning fire in both the region where combustion is occurring and the hot gas plume formed above the combustion section. The solution yields the mass-flow rate as a function of height which can be directly related to the excess air. It was found that the height at which 400% excess air has been entrained corresponds to the visible flame height according to data taken in our laboratory as well as that presented by a number of other workers.

TL;DR: The nucleus was only slightly changed by 48 hr soaking, but cytoplasmic organelles underwent developmental changes, and there was proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum, the appearance of dictyosomes, and an inward migration of lipid bodies.
Abstract: Radicles (1 mm long) of pea embryo axes, excised from dormant seeds and from seeds soaked for 80 min, 8, 12, and 48 hr, were fixed in glutaraldehyde and postfixed in OsO4. The nucleus was only slightly changed by 48 hr soaking, but cytoplasmic organelles underwent developmental changes. There was proliferation of endoplasmic reticulum, the appearance of dictyosomes, and an inward migration of lipid bodies. Most of these changes were observed within 8 hr after soaking started. Plastids, mitochondria, protein bodies, and protein crystalline bodies were also identified and their developmental changes were followed.

TL;DR: The results of experiments on two-span continuous beams subjected to various programs of variable repeated loading are reported and analyzed in this article, where the loading program was designed to simulate the effects of a one-and two-point heavy load moving slowly across the beam.
Abstract: The results of experiments on two-span continuous beams subjected to various programs of variable repeated loading are reported and analyzed. The loading program was designed to simulate the effects of a one- and two-point heavy load moving slowly across the beam. The experiments were performed on 1.5 in. by 0.75 in. rectangular, heat-treated, steel bars and on as-rolled, wide-flange, two-span steel beams. The test results are examined in accordance with a shakedown analysis based on the simple plastic theory. Design implications with special reference to bridges are also considered.

TL;DR: Results of application of the perturbation approach along with stochastic approximations to the problem of optimizing non-linear stoChastic systems subject to quadratic index are discussed and a new Stochastic approximation technique, that permits more accuracy than the linearization, is suggested for the non- linear problem.
Abstract: Results of application of the perturbation approach along with stochastic approximations to the problem of optimizing non-linear stochastic systems subject to quadratic index are discussed. The perturbation approach is first introduced with the help of linear regulator systems. This is combined subsequently with statistical linearization in order to derive sub-optimal solutions for the problem of optimizing a non-linear system. Finally, a new stochastic approximation technique, that permits more accuracy than the linearization, is suggested for the non-linear problem. Numerical examples are presented to compare the results of the various approximation methods and also to illustrate the possible advantages of non-linearization.

TL;DR: In this article, the trans-structure of crotyl alcohol was attributed to the predominant form based on I.G. R. spectra and synthesis of trans-isomer.
Abstract: G. L. C. enabled a separation of cis- and trans-crotyl alcohol. Commercially available samples of crotyl alcohol and the products of controlled potential electrolysis of crotonaldehyde contained about 20% of the cis-form. The limited amount of information available on N. M. R. spectra of similar compounds prevented an application of the coupling constants for the interaction between a methyl group and ethylenic protons in attribution of the trans-structure. Attribution of trans-structure to the predominant form was based upon I. R. spectra and synthesis of the trans-isomer.

Abstract: A power synchro system is studied using modem analytical, computational, and experimental methods to extend previous studies. Previous work is reviewed, and equations are derived describing the system for dynamic and steady-state performance. The dynamic equations are linearized by the Taylor series expansion to obtain describing equations which permit the study of dynamic performance by the well-developed techniques of linear system analysis. Methods are described for the study of the system by frequency response and state variable techniques.

TL;DR: In this article, a selective process was demonstrated under conditions that eliminated exploratory behavior, receptor adjustments, and that could not be construed as abstraction, and the results confirmed that Ss chose the stimuli of highest contrast, but in the event that contrast was equivalent for two stimuli, the target of highest albedo was chosen significantly more often.
Abstract: The operation of a selective process was demonstrated under conditions that eliminated exploratory behavior, receptor adjustments, and that could not be construed as abstraction. Ss were given a choice reaction-time test to tachistoscopically exposed stimuli. There were three conditions of brightness and contrast. Four targets equally spaced in brightness units were presented either on a black, a medium gray, or a white background. If a selective process was found to operate, it was hoped to separate the effects of albedo and contrast as factors determining priority in selection. The results confirmed that Ss chose the stimuli of highest contrast, but in the event that contrast was equivalent for two stimuli, the target of highest albedo was chosen significantly more often.

TL;DR: This algorithm generates the complex prime numbers located in the one-eighth plane defined by 0 < y < x, and may be thought of as one of the factors of the remaining rational prime 2 = (1+i)(1-i).
Abstract: comment The procedure generates the complex prime numbers located in the one-eighth plane defined by 0 < y < x. Any prime found in that area has seven more associated primes:-x + yi, x-yi, ± y ± xi. These associated primes must be generated externally to cprimes. The first complex prime generated by cprimes is 1 + i, which exceptionally lies on x = y and has only three associated primes. The algorithm generates a list of complex primes in order of increasing modulus: the parameter m of the call is the highest modulus to be included in the list and should satisfy m > 2. PR and PI will contain respectively the real and imaginary parts of the generated list, with PR _> PI > 0 for each prime. The value of the procedure is the number of primes generated. Algorithm 311 [1], sieve 2, is used to generate the rational primes less than mL Then it is known (see, for instance [2]) that a rational prime p of the form p = 4n-b 1 can be expressed as p = a 2-4-b 2, and factorized as (a+bi)(a-bi) in the complex plane, where a + bi and a-bi are complex primes. For our present purpose we choose a > b and include only a 4-bi in the list. A rational prime p of the form p = 4n + 3 remains prime in the complex plane, so we include p + 0i in the list if p < m. Finally, the complex prime 1 + i may be thought of as one of the factors of the remaining rational prime 2 = (1+i)(1-i). Although this algorithm and Algorithm 372 [3] are not directly comparable, since they produce the list of complex primes in a different order, the accompanying remark suggests that the present algorithm is often to be preferred. integer array P2[1:0.7Xm T 2~In(m)], P3[1 : 1.4Xm/ln(m)] ; e := sieve 2(m~2, P2); PR[1] := PI[1] := a := c := i; b:=0; for d := 2 step 1 until e do begin p := P2[d]; q := p-1; if (q+4) X 4 ~ q then begin if p < m then LI: begin b := b-4-1; end else begin P3[b] := p end if a < b then begin ifP3[a] T 2 < pthen begin c := c + 1; PR[c] := P3[a]; a := a+ 1; Pl[c] …

TL;DR: In this article, a model for a simple induction-heating system consisting of a coil constructed from a rectangular conductor and charged with a nonmagnetic billet of the same length is presented.
Abstract: A model is presented for a simple induction-heating system consisting of a coil constructed from a rectangular conductor and charged with a nonmagnetic billet of the same length. The unique feature of the model is that prediction for losses, efficiency of heating, power factor, and temperature distribution are possible from a knowledge of the coil voltage, coil and billet geometry, and materials parameters. Results from a sample application are compared with experimental data obtained in the course of the study.

Abstract: An actual synchro system is examined with particular attention to dynamic behavior. Using frequency response and eigenvalue analysis, dynamic behavior is examined over a wide speed range. Experimental results obtained by frequency response measurements on the actual system are presented. Predicted values are correlated with experimental results and conclusions drawn regarding system performance, in particular concerning stability. Some steady-state results are also included to show the effectiveness of the model in predicting performance.

TL;DR: In this article, two different designs of bare single-layer steel- reinforced aluminum conductor are examined both by theoretical techniques and by experimental methods, and a comparison between two different commercial designs is effected with the aid of the model, and the results are evaluated in the light of experimental evidence.
Abstract: Two different designs of bare single-layer steel- reinforced aluminum conductor are examined both by theoretical techniques and by experimental methods. An approximate model is developed which uses a new approach for solution for impedances of such conductors. A comparison between two different commercial designs is effected with the aid of the model, and the results are evaluated in the light of experimental evidence. Suggestions are made for comparing conductor designs and also for the improvement of designs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical means of computing the deflections of beams subjected to variable repeated loading is discussed, which includes strain hardening, changes in the virgin moment-curvature curve due to the cyclic nature of the load, and allows yielding to occur over a finite region of the beam.
Abstract: A theoretical means of computing the deflections of beams subjected to variable repeated loading is discussed. The method of analysis includes strain hardening, changes in the virgin moment-curvature curve due to the cyclic nature of the load, and allows yielding to occur over a finite region of the beam. The results of the analysis are compared to test results. The method predicts shakedown loads beyond the simple plastic load and accurately predicts deflection response.

TL;DR: In this paper, Ss were exposed to slides of intermediate blur for 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds and were asked to guess the identity of the blurred object and to estimate how confident they were of each guess.
Abstract: In Experiment 1, Ss were exposed to slides of intermediate blur for 5, 10, 30, or 60 sec and were asked to guess the identity of the blurred object and to estimate how confident they were of each guess. The S’s task in Experiment 2 was merely to view the blurred slides while S’s EEG waves were being recorded. After being exposed to a blurred slide for a certain duration, in Experiment 3, Ss were required, by means of a key press, to choose to view either a clear version of the blurred slide or an unrelated clear picture. Uncertainty/second, EEG desynchronization/’second, and related choices were all found to be a negatively sloped function of viewing duration.

TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of deriving a frequency-domain sufficient condition for the global asymptotic stability of a discrete-time system having hysteretic controllers is considered.
Abstract: The problem of deriving a frequency-domain sufficient condition for the global asymptotic stability of a discrete-time system having hysteretic controllers is considered. It is suggested that the hysteretic characteristic be replaced by a function of the form f(y, ẏ) where y(t) is the input to the controller. This allows the problem to be reformulated to that of deriving a sufficient condition for the stability of a two-controller system where both the controllers are nonhysteretic. This latter problem is solved by embedding it into a two-variable problem. Numerical examples are presented which illustrate the results.
