TL;DR: Accuracy was barely affected, but the reach trajectories indicated that infants switched from a miss path to a hit path in midcourse, suggesting that visually directed reaching was operative in the youngest infants and that it improved with age.
Abstract: This investigation measured the accuracy of reaching in infants wearing 30-diopter prisms. Infants varied in age from 4 to 10 months. Although accuracy was barely affected, the reach trajectories indicated that infants switched from a miss path to a hit path in midcourse. There was some evidence to support the view that visually directed reaching was operative in the youngest infants and that it improved with age.

TL;DR: The results of computer-simulation experiments being conducted by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick illustrate some of the problems of the relation between frequency distributions and spatial distributions of elements and raise some interesting questions about sampling patterns and physical size of samples.
Abstract: The exploration geochemist faces a serious problem in reconciling theoretical statistics with the empirical distribution of elements in materials in the earth's crust. The results of computer-simulation experiments being conducted by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick illustrate some of the problems of the relation between frequency distributions and spatial distributions of elements and raise some interesting questions about sampling patterns and physical size of samples. Most importantly, the simulation experiments and empirical examples support the contention that attempts to make an assumption of normality more efficient by performing log transformations on positively skewed data may defeat the purpose of statistical analysis for exploration work. New developments in computer-data presentation and interpretation, including population sorting and classification, illustrate the increasing use of the computer in exploration geochemistry.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the evolution of fracture around cavities subjected to polyaxial compression through a series of model experiments and found that at low confining pressure, the tensile mode dominates with collapse coinciding with the sudden and explosive appearance of the secondary tensile fracture, which in turn is brought about by material failure at compressive stress concentrations.

TL;DR: An attempt was made to review the empirical evidence regarding the socialization effects of participation in sport and it was indicated that the use of comparisons of samples of athletes and nonparticipants as the basis for investigating for the possibility of socialized effects was invalid and that much of its instrumentation was questionable.
Abstract: An attempt was made to review the empirical evidence regarding the socialization effects of participation in sport. The research was discussed with reference to three types of socialization effects; psychological effects, behavioral effects, and attitudinal effects. An initial review showed the results of these studies to be both contradictory and confusing. The results were divided between support and nonsupport for the possibility of socialization effects, and in addition some results suggested unexpected and undesirable relationships between personal characteristics and participation in sport. A further analysis of this research, concentrating specifically upon methodological and theoretical concerns, indicated (1) that its use of comparisons of samples of athletes and nonparticipants as the basis for investigating for the possibility of socialization effects was invalid because of an erroneous assumption of initial population similarity, (2) that much of its instrumentation was questionable a...

TL;DR: The antennae of the sawyer beetles Monochamus notatus and M. scutellatus were examined with the light and scanning electron microscopes to determine the types, number, distribution and innervation of the sense organs.
Abstract: The antennae of the sawyer beetles Monochamus notatus and M. scutellatus were examined with the light and scanning electron microscopes to determine the types, number, distribution and innervation of the sense organs. Nine types of sensilla are described. Both short, thin-walled pegs (sensilla basiconica) and reversely curved thick-walled hairs (sensilla trichodea) are chemoreceptors. There are three types of long, thick-walled hairs (sensilla chaetica) which may be mechanoreceptors. One of these is modified in males to form unique snail-shaped pegs. A few dome-shaped organs, probably campaniform sensilla, were found. In addition to sense organs, many glands occur in association with the sensilla, and the antennae are well supplied with dermal glands connected by canals to small pores on the surface.

TL;DR: The mixture of scholarly and nonscholarly work which constitutes the periodical literature of information science is discussed, primarily in terms of the ten journals isolated as the core.
Abstract: The journal citations in A Bibliography on Information Science and Technology (13) provide the data for this Bradford graphical analysis. The mixture of scholarly and nonscholarly work which constitutes the periodical literature of information science is discussed, primarily in terms of the ten journals isolated as the core. The analysis is also directed toward as assessment of the completeness of the bibliography. It is inferred that the bibliography is 72 percent complete in terms of journals and 83 percent complete in terms of articles. Two further uses that have been proposed for the Bradford distribution are ranking subjects in order of breadth and determining policy for collections development. The limited results available in these two areas are considered and problems for future research suggested.

Abstract: The results of these tests confirm that a prosthesis is easier to control with sensory feedback and that the proposed technique is acceptable to patients as well as to professionals working in this field. Work in this Institute is now directed toward development of the feedback system to a form suitable for inclusion in a prosthesis. This requires miniaturisation, minimisation of power drain, and, hopefully, provision for use of common electrodes for stimulation and control.

TL;DR: The physiology of the sensilla styloconica on the proboscis of the female spruce budworm was studied using tip‐ and sidewall‐recording techniques and one receptor cell showed a concentration‐dependent response to sucrose and honey solutions.
Abstract: The physiology of the sensilla styloconica on the proboscis of the female spruce budworm was studied using tip- and sidewall-recording techniques. One receptor cell showed a concentration-dependent response to sucrose and honey solutions with an immediate rise of the spike activity which adapted within one second to half the initial frequency. Stimulation with distilled water, sodium and potassium chloride gave a completely different response. After an initial delay, which varied from 100 ms to several seconds, the spike frequency of a second cell increased slowly and then remained at a constant rate until the end of the stimulation. Whereas the spike frequency seemed to be independent of concentration, the delay period following stimulus onset tended to increase with higher salt concentrations. The response of one cell was elicited by contact of the receptor tip with a balsam fir needle. However, contact with a glass capillary gave a similar response, suggesting mechanoreception but no chemoreception of host plant chemicals.

TL;DR: In this article, the basis set influence on the total energy and dissociation energy of NeH+ and the nature of its dissociation products in several electronic states were discussed and it was shown that there is no pseudo-crossing or crossing of the investigated excited state potential energy curves with the ground-state curve.
Abstract: Ab initio self-consistent field (SCF) calculations using an optimized contracted gaussian lobe function were carried out for the NeH+ ion, NeH and linear asymmetric NeH2 + ion and their dissociation products in the ground and excited states. The basis set influence on the total energy and dissociation energy of NeH+ and the nature of its dissociation products in several electronic states are discussed. Present results on NeH+ indicate that there is no pseudo-crossing or crossing of the investigated excited state potential energy curves of NeH+ with the ground-state curve. Configuration interaction (CI) calculations were additionally carried out for the 2Σ and 2Π states of linear asymmetric NeH2 + ion. The results point out that the reactants Ne+ + H2 probably correlate with an excited state of NeH2 +, which through avoided crossing correlates with the ground state of NeH+ and an excited H atom.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that a curvature tensor is the curvature of a pseudometric and that the pseudometric is unique in the sense that it has no curvatures tensors.
Abstract: Some theorems are given which show when a curvature tensor is the curvature of pseudometric and when this pseudo-metric is unique. These results not only contribute to the exact solution work done previously but also throw some light on Mach's principle in general relativity.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the general expansion-free solution is a family of space-times depending on a single constant parameter which is the ratio of the (constant) twists of the two principal null congruences.
Abstract: In a previous article the Einstein-Maxwell field equations for non-null electromagnetic fields were studied under the conditions that the null tetrad is parallel-propagated along both principal null congruences. A solution with twist and shear, but no expansion, was found and was conjectured to be the only expansion-free solution. Here it is shown that this conjecture is false; the general expansion-free solution is found to be a family of space-times depending on a single constant parameter which is the ratio of the (constant) twists of the two principal null congruences.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the parallelism of geodetic and satellite systems to the average terrestrial system under the assumption that the satellite system is a fixed framework invariant with respect to geodesic network adjustment.
Abstract: The parallelism of geodetic and satellite systems to the average terrestrial system is examined, under the assumption that a geodetic system is a fixed framework invariant with respect to geodetic network adjustment. In this case a geodetic system is rotated with respect to the average terrestrial system only about the ellipsoid normal of the initial point. The method is demonstrated using coordinates and covariance matrices for BC-4 and SECOR satellite tracking stations computed by Mueller and his co-workers. It is shown that the NAD geodetic system is scaled significantly larger than the satellite systems; the SECOR satellite systems have significant Z-rotations with respect to the average terrestrial system; and the ETH geodetic system may have a significant rotation with respect to the average terrestrial system.

TL;DR: In this article, a Protestant clergyman set out to review the issues of the campaign from the pulpit, and pointed out that both Liberals and Conservatives were vociferous in their efforts to portray themselves as the champions of the movement.
Abstract: Canadian historians have devoted considerable attention to post-war agitation on the Prairies; they have virtually ignored similar agitation in the Maritimes, the regional protest movement which became known by the slogan "Maritime Rights." The few comments it has received, in biographical literature or in sweeping analyses of long periods of history, have been largely concerned with its political manifestations. Such a pre-occupation is not surprising. Both Liberals and Conservatives were vociferous in their efforts to portray themselves as the champions of the movement. Shortly before the Antigonish-Guysborough by-election of 1927 a Protestant clergyman set out to review the issues of the campaign from the pulpit. Both candidates, he noted, were clamouring for attention as the defenders of "Maritime Rights." This aspect of their campaign, he said, reminded him of the behaviour of his own young children one evening when he and his wife were getting ready to go visiting. The little girl set up an awful howl from the moment the babysitter arrived. She bawled and bawled and bawled. Finally, just as her parents were going out the door, her brother turned, slapped her sharply, and declared, "Shut up, I wanna cry." There was much more to "Maritime Rights" than the conspicuous wail of the politicians. One cannot begin to tell here the story of the movement—the intensive organizational campaign with its delegations to Ottawa, economic conferences, and country-wide speaking tours; the erratic swings in the popular vote from one party to another as Maritimers searched desperately for solutions to their problems; and the inevitable royal commissions sent in to defuse the agitation — but one can at least attempt a more basic introduction

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors determined the optimal cruise points for each variation using Eq. (3), and then calculated the adjusted minimum fuel trajectory for each of the variations using the values for (ocDc/Vc) calculated at these adjusted cruise points.
Abstract: Performance sensitivity may be compensated by adjusting the nominal trajectory to be fuel optimal for the specific variation under consideration. As a first step, optimal cruise points are determined for each variation using Eq. (3). Only variations in the drag coefficients, aircraft weight, and atmospheric conditions cause a shift in the cruise point. The cruise point shifts upward as the drag coefficients and aircraft weight increase, and it shifts downward as the parameters decrease; while a Hot Day atmosphere causes the cruise point to shift upward and a Cold Day atmosphere causes a downward shift. Using the values for (ocDc/Vc) calculated at these adjusted cruise points, the adjusted minimum fuel trajectory for each variation is determined. The fuel performance sensitivity for each variation is given in Table 3. Path adjustment causes very little, if any significant improvement in fuel consumption for any of the parametric or atmospheric variations. For example, when aircraft weight is increased by 20% along the nominal path, fuel consumption increases by 23%. However, when the nominal trajectory is adjusted to be fuel optimal for a 20% weight increase, the fuel consumption is increased by 22% representing a 1% improvement. Obviously, adjusting the nominal trajectory to be fuel optimal for the parameters examined here fails to provide significant improvement in fuel consumption.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors formalize psychosocial behaviour through systems theory and investigate the tendency of an authority to rationalize a social structure, leading to two conclusions: (1) the more elements of a social organisation are suppressed in attaining their own goals in order to achieve the goal of the authority, the more power is assigned to the authority; and (2) as the authority attempts to achieve greater goal-attainability, it becomes necessary it becomes to reduce the individuality of each element.
