TL;DR: In this paper, it has been found that several argon laser lines and the 6328 A helium-neon laser line cause excitation of diatomic rubidium and cesium in the vapor phase to excited electronic states.
Abstract: It has been found that several argon laser lines and the 6328 A helium-neon laser line cause excitation of diatomic rubidium and cesium in the vapor phase to excited electronic states. The excitation of only a few, well separated rotation levels in the upper state, and the resulting simple line fluorescence spectra will allow determination of molecular constants not available by other methods. Atomic fluorescence was also present. Twenty-seven atomic cesium lines were observed between 3611 and 8946 A under illumination at 4880 A. The intensities of several atomic lines were found to have a quadratic dependence upon laser intensity, and are therefore attributed to excitation processes involving two photons.

TL;DR: The medievalist is guilty of this error when, from the vantage point of the present, he transposes his own notions of the modern secular state upon the political life of societies where it did not exist.
Abstract: The historian who pursues the origins of the modern con flict of church and state in the events of earlier times sometimes falls victim to the tendency to impose concepts of more recent date on the actions and opinions of older generations. The medievalist is guilty of this error when, from the vantage point of the present, he transposes his own notions of the modern secular state upon the political life of societies where it did not exist.1 Similarly, he misconstrues medieval attitudes when he presupposes the necessity of a separation of the two powers and then searches out illustrations of this division in ages when they often coincide. Fascinated by personalities like Thomas Becket, Henry IV, and Hildebrand, he sometimes makes prince and priest enemies in every sphere of action and assumes the existence of an inevitable and invariable hostility between them. In such ways he exaggerates both the intensity and the per sistency of their conflict and ignores the possibility of their frequent cooperation. Quite recently a distinguished British student of medieval political theory has scolded us for the "anachronistic nonsense" of talking about the medieval "state," especially before the thirteenth century and of applying to the Middle Ages the con temporary preoccupation with the "church-state problem."2 In reality the competition of the two authorities was neither unavoid

Abstract: Rats (N=180) were used as subjects in this investigation of the effects of prepubertal physical training on tibial growth, organ and body weights, serum cholesterol levels, basal metabolism, and voluntary exercise habits at puberty and 160 days postpuberty. The animals were assigned to one of three initial treatment groups: sedentary, voluntary exercise, or voluntary plus forced exercise. The sedentary animals were allowed no exercise, the voluntary-plus forced rats were allowed to run at will but also were forced to swim with weights on their tails for 30 minutes daily for 35 days just prior to puberty. At puberty 20 animals from each group were sacrificed. The remaining rats were allowed to exercise voluntarily for the next 160 days. After 160 days a second sacrifice of 10 animals from each group occurred. The trained rats at puberty had lower body weights, greater relative adrenal and testis weights, lower kidney weights, shorter tibias, lower serum cholesterol values, and lower levels of volu...

TL;DR: For example, the authors found that depressed individuals in low opportunity-high aspiration communities have higher rates of hospitalized depression as expected, and that the distribution of depressedives is better explained by the ratio of opportunities to independently measured aspirations than it is by the opportunity level alone.
Abstract: Both sociological and psychiatric theory suggest that the incidence of depressive disorders should be higher in communities where opportunities for occupational success are inadequate relative to aspirations. Such community structures would block many residents from reaching their occupational goals. Presumably, this structurally induced achievement failure is experienced as personal failure, leading to depression for some. Ecological correlations for 27 communities indicate that low opportunity-high aspiration communities have higher rates of hospitalized depression as expected. All educational groups have higher rates of depression in communities where achievement is blocked, but the impact of community structure is greatest on the better educated. The distribution of depressives is better explained by the ratio of opportunities to independently measured aspirations than it is by the opportunity level alone.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of environmental temperature and water volume in which worms are immersed on the output of ammonia and urea during fasting has been studied and it was shown that the temperature has been shown to markedly affect both the magnitude of output of these nitrogenous wastes and the time required for fasting worms to become ureotelic.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a modified He3 proportional counter to measure the integrated neutrons from 10-8 to 15 MeV, which was located about 4.5 meters out on the EP-5 boom.
Abstract: The objective of this experiment is to monitor the cosmic-ray neutron flux over a large region of space near the earth for an extended time with a simple neutron monitor. The basic detecting system to measure the integrated neutron flux from 10-8 to 15 MeV consists of a moderated He3 proportional counter surrounded by a charged-particle rejection system. A plastic scintillator viewed by a photomultiplier is operated in coincidence with the neutron counter to determine the energy spectrum and flux in the 1-10 MeV range. In order to minimize contributions from neutrons produced within the OGO spacecraft, the sensor is located about 4.5 meters out on the EP-5 boom. The experiment includes an in-flight calibrator to check pulse discriminator levels on neutron and charged-particle channels and a calibration-loop system to compensate for changes in the photo-multiplier gain. The mean neutron detection efficiency for the expected neutron energy spectrum over the energy range 10-8-15 MeV is 1.8 cm2. The weight of the neutron sensor is 2.58 kg, with a length of 0.314 meter and a diameter of 0.111 meters. The total power requirements are 4.5 watts.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the fabrication method and test results for Co60 and Am2 4 1 calibration sources used in an onboard calibration system for a γ-ray spectrometer and associated x-ray detector to be flown on an earth orbiting satellite.
Abstract: This paper describes the fabrication method and test results for Co60 and Am2 4 1 calibration sources to be used in an onboard calibration system for a γ-ray spectrometer and associated x-ray detector to be flown on an earth orbiting satellite. The system consists of radioactive sources loaded into scintillator buttons which-register the charged decay particles (betas and alphas) emitted by the radionuclides in coincidence with γ-rays. The latter are detected by γ-ray and x-ray spectrometers as calibration lines. The scintillator button is viewed by a separate photomultiplier tube so the light pulses resulting from the charged decay particles can be used to gate off the calibration γ-ray lines from the spectrometers during the normal mode of operation. The calibration is achieved by accepting only those pulses which are in coincidence with the pulses from the scintillator button, thus recording the calibration lines from the radioactive source. Some suggestions for future developments are also briefly discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a metric approach was proposed to decompose the gravitational tensor into vacuum and material parts and performing proper transformations of the decomposed parts separately or simultaneously in accordance with the experimental configuration under consideration.
Abstract: Electromagnetic-cavity resonances in a rotationally induced gravitational field are investigated using the gravitational tensorg αβ as the structural element in Maxwell’s equations The constitutive relations are expressed by tensorial relation in free space byF hi =√ɛ 0/μ 0 g 1/2 g hj g ik F jk The equations have the four-dimensional invariant form ifF jk is considered as a covariant bivector in 4-dimensional space which admits all orthogonal homogeneous transformations (rotations and reflections)G4 is a subgroup of the general affine or Poincare group The method presented here is the metric approach generalized so as to accommodate all possible experimental data This is achieved by simply decomposing the gravitational tensor into vacuum and material parts and performing proper transformations of the decomposed parts separately or simultaneously in accordance with the experimental configuration under consideration Furthermore the comparison of this presentation with that of the nonmetric approach is discussed

TL;DR: A provisional structure closely related to the pigments of P. indigofera and P. lemonnieri is identified which forms cuboidal crystals among the cells in P. nigrifaciens.
Abstract: P. nigrifaciens produces a water-insoluble blue pigment on solid media which forms cuboidal crystals among the cells. The pigment was prepared by bulk harvest of isolated colonies incubated 5 days at 15°C. The cells were extracted with DMF and the extract benzene-precipitated and chromatographed over Sephadex LH-20. Analytical data were compiled leading to a provisional structure closely related to the pigments of P. indigofera and P. lemonnieri.
