TL;DR: Although confirmatory autoradiographic and biochemical data on hagfish mucosubstances are lacking, the histochemical staining results and their subsequent modifications by enzyme and chemical treatment indicate that the majority of these mucins contain sulfomucin while a few are composed of sialomuc in.
Abstract: The mucous cells of the epidermis and slime glands in three species of Pacific hagfishes were studied histochemically to determine the presence or absence of acidic and neutral mucosubstances. Most mucous cells contained diastase-resistant PAS reactivity that varied in intensity. A few mucous cells contained diastase-labile substances exclusively.

TL;DR: Arrow Grotto, an inner sanctum deep within a mountain of south-central New Mexico and reached only by a crawlway from Feather Cave, was found to contain masses of offerings untouched for six centuries or more as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Arrow Grotto, an inner sanctum deep within a mountain of south-central New Mexico and reached only by a crawlway from Feather Cave, was found to contain masses of offerings untouched for six centuries or more. Examination of material and of accompanying pictographs by men from several living pueblos led to identification of the grotto as a shrine for Earth Mother and Sun Father, visited at the period of biannual solar ceremonies. Parallels between Arrow Grotto, other prehistoric ceremonial caves, and even the Anasazi sipapu, show a pattern surprisingly similar to that of a number of Pueblo ceremonial caves in use today or in the recent past. Parallels to concepts regarding caves and supernaturals in Mexican cultures indicate a series of rapid northward diffusions of religious ideas, the first, at least, from eastern Mesoamerica, through Preclassic to Postclassic periods, one of our most specific evidences of influential contacts. Original owners of Feather Cave and Arrow Grotto probably were Piros who left the Rio Bonito Valley to become mingled, eventually, with southern Tiwa relatives, whose descendants still inhabit pueblos near Albuquerque.

TL;DR: A survey of the archeological evidence suggests that three climatic zones were differentially exploited by Neanderthal man and that some of the sites document a shift in subsistence away from a generalized hunting pattern to the specialized hunting of large, migratory herd animals as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Human remains firmly associated with Mousterian artifacts and exhibiting characteristics transitional between those of Neanderthal and fully modern man are known from two Levantine sites. A survey of the archeological evidence suggests that three climatic zones were differentially exploited by Neanderthal man and that some of the sites document a shift in subsistence away from a generalized hunting pattern to the specialized hunting of large, migratory herd animals. The hypothesis is offered that the formal changes documented for the Upper Paleolithic occurred in response to this basic shift in human ecology.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the back scattering of light by water droplets and found that the axial ray varies sinusoidally with droplet size and the edge ray varies in a very complicated, but periodic manner.
Abstract: We have studied the two mechanisms responsible for the back scattering of light by water droplets: the axial ray and the edge ray. Using a He–Ne laser and fiber-supported water droplets, ranging in diam from 0.6 to 1.5 mm, we observed the intensity fluctuations of these two rays as the droplet evaporated. The axial ray varies sinusoidally with droplet size, and the edge ray varies in a very complicated, but periodic manner. The edge-ray signal, as a function of the size parameter, appears to consist of periodic humps of spacing 0.27±0.01, upon which are superimposed, in a coherent manner, clusters of spikes, very narrow resonances. The basic spike period seems to be 0.82±0.02. A complicated beat phenomenon appears to be present with a period of 60.7±1.5. Our experimental results are compared with the results of a Mie computation with the size parameter 3000 and with a simple model.

TL;DR: In this article, electron micrographs of serial sections of Hemipteran nebenkerns were reconstructed to determine how the mitochondria transform into two separate equal-sized bodies.
Abstract: Mitochondria in early spermatids of many insects aggregate and form a round body, the nebenkern. The nebenkern undergoes a structural differentiation and then divides into two separate equal-sized bodies. In the present study, nebenkerns of Murgantia histrionica, a Hemipteran insect, were reconstructed using electron micrographs of serial sections to determine how the mitochondria transform into the two separate bodies. Newly formed nebenkerns are made of one piece, an anastomosis of rod-like segments. Some segments interconnect to join networks of rings. Each network interlocks with another similar network, but networks which interlock are connected with each other by other segments of the nebenkern. Later, the entire nebenkern is made of two unconnected and interlocked networks of rings. The nebenkern appears to remain bipartite during subsequent differentiation. Since the two pieces are interlocked, breaks must occur before the pieces can separate. As breaks occur, each network transforms into a set of curved sheets, producing a nebenkern made of four concentric layers. The three outer layers are each made of two curved sheets which surround a bipartite central core. The surface sheets meet at a furrow in the surface of the nebenkern; segments in each layer are roughly symmetrical with each other about the plane in which the furrow lies. Rod-like segments join alternate segments. The number of layers then decreases to three, and later, to two. These nebenkerns resemble four-layered nebenkerns, but fewer connections between alternate segments are present. The two pieces constituting the nebenkern probably separate after most of the latter connections disappear. Hypotheses to account for the observed changes in nebenkern structure are presented.

TL;DR: The relation of political development to socioeconomic development in the Latin American context has been investigated in this paper, where it is argued with much plausibility that military intervention in politics, say, derives from elements in the Hispanic tradition.
Abstract: One way of acquiring insight into the processes of political development in Latin America is to compare the countries of the area systematically in terms of the “degree of development” which each can be said to have attained. Ideally, such an enterprise can lead to the understanding of the past history of the “more developed” countries by reference to the present problems of the “less developed” while an understanding of the problems confronting the more developed countries can make possible a glimpse into the future of those now less developed. Isolation of the factors responsible for a state's being more or less developed can moreover prove instructive for the understanding of the relations between political and socioeconomic phenomena. Perhaps most important, such comparisons provide the means for holding constant effects attributable to characteristics shared by all, or nearly all, of the Latin American countries. Thus it can be argued with much plausibility that military intervention in politics, say, derives from elements in the Hispanic tradition. Yet it is clear that the frequency of military intervention varies from country to country, even where they share equally in that tradidition. Thus one is forced to go beyond the “Hispanic tradition” thesis with which the investigation might otherwise have come to rest. In the present article I will be concerned with the problem of the relation of political development to socioeconomic development in the Latin American context. For reasons that will become apparent below, I will not at this point attempt a rigorous analysis of the concept of political development, which has already been the subject of a large and rapidly growing literature.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that an antibody to distal microvillous membranes competes with the IF-vitamin B12 complex for a specific binding site or receptor located on the surface of distal hamster intestine.
Abstract: Microvillous membranes isolated from the distal, but not proximal, half of hamster small bowel induced in rabbits the formation of antisera which inhibited intrinsic factor-mediated uptake of vitamin B12 by hamster brush borders. The extent of inhibition was directly proportional to the concentration of antiserum, and an excess of IF-bound vitamin B12 could overcome the inhibitory effect. The inhibitory factor was absorbed from antisera by brush borders isolated from the distal, but not proximal, half of the hamster intestine. Fractionation of antisera by gel filtration and DEAE-cellulose chromatography established that immunoglobulin G contained the inhibitory factor. Antisera capable of completely blocking uptake of IF-bound vitamin B12 did not react with hamster IF or with the IF-vitamin B12 complex, did not inhibit brush border disaccharidase activity and did not impair glucose transport by everted sacs of hamster intestine. These results demonstrate that an antibody to distal microvillous membranes competes with the IF-vitamin B12 complex for a specific binding site or receptor located on the surface of distal hamster intestine.

Abstract: 4 pigeons were trained to peck an 8-location response strip for grain reinforcement and given 14-session exposures to variable interval and regular reinforcement schedules. Regardless of the sequence of reinforcement schedules, partial reinforcemen produced greater response-location variability along the topographical response continuum than did regular reinforcement.

TL;DR: In this article, the optimum (least-mean-square) linear mixing of prognostic information and synoptic observations in objective analyses is derived for the special case of an unbounded, spatially periodic observation lattice in a homogeneous field.
Abstract: Formulas are derived for the optimum (least-mean-square) linear mixing of prognostic information and synoptic observations in objective analyses. Exploitation of these results makes possible a continuing synoptic analysis, updated as new measurements are reported, without the necessity of globally simultaneous observations. For the special case of an unbounded, spatially periodic observation lattice in a homogeneous field, solutions in the wave-number domain are obtained. A one-dimensional wave equation and a thermal diffusion problem are treated as examples. TL;DR: Although the gerbils and kangaroo rats were similar in their nonreactivity to the grid shock, the g Gerbils avoided at a markedly higher level than the k Kangaroo rats, which may have found the shuttle response incompatible with its naturally passive response to stress.
Abstract: Reactivity to shock and avoidance responding in a two-way shuttlebox were compared in three species of rodents: M. unquiculates (gerbils), D. ordi (kangaroo rats), and M. musculus (laboratory mice). The more reactive mice avoided more than either desert species. Although the gerbils and kangaroo rats were similar in their nonreactivity to the grid shock, the gerbils avoided at a markedly higher level than the kangaroo rats. The kangaroo rat, possibly a truer desert animal than the gerbil, may have found the shuttle response incompatible with its naturally passive response to stress.

TL;DR: The microbiological control efficiency of two class 100 laminar down-flow hoods was determined by using aerosols of Bacillus subtilis var.
Abstract: The microbiological control efficiency of two class 100 laminar down-flow hoods was determined by using aerosols of Bacillus subtilis var. niger spores. The first unit challenged utilized a slanted eyelid to partially enclose the front work opening. This hood showed nearly perfect control of ambient organisms in the work area. It also gave a 10(6) or greater drop in the number of organisms passing out of the exhaust system. However, when the interior work area of the hood was challenged, significant numbers of spores penetrated the air barrier and escaped into the ambient air. A redesigned laminar flow hood was built incorporating a vertical eyelid and a reduced opening to the work area. This hood showed the same excellent characteristics for controlling ambient contamination. Exhaust system leakage was also extremely low. Air barrier efficiency for the newer hood was increased with lower amounts of spore penetration into the ambient air.
