Abstract: We analyze 24 binary radio pulsars in the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) nine-year data set. We make 14 significant measurements of the Shapiro delay, including new detections in four pulsar-binary systems (PSRs J0613−0200, J2017+0603, J2302+4442, and J2317+1439), and derive estimates of the binary-component masses and orbital inclination for these MSP-binary systems. We find a wide range of binary pulsar masses, with values as low as ${m}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.18}_{-0.09}^{+0.10}\,{M}_{\odot }$ for PSR J1918−0642 and as high as ${m}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.928}_{-0.017}^{+0.017}\,{M}_{\odot }$ for PSR J1614−2230 (both 68.3% credibility). We make an improved measurement of the Shapiro timing delay in the PSR J1918−0642 and J2043+1711 systems, measuring the pulsar mass in the latter system to be ${m}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.41}_{-0.18}^{+0.21}\,{M}_{\odot }$ (68.3% credibility) for the first time. We measure secular variations of one or more orbital elements in many systems, and use these measurements to further constrain our estimates of the pulsar and companion masses whenever possible. In particular, we used the observed Shapiro delay and periastron advance due to relativistic gravity in the PSR J1903+0327 system to derive a pulsar mass of ${m}_{{\rm{p}}}={1.65}_{-0.02}^{+0.02}\,{M}_{\odot }$ (68.3% credibility). We discuss the implications that our mass measurements have on the overall neutron-star mass distribution, and on the "mass/orbital-period" correlation due to extended mass transfer.

Abstract: • Cognitive therapy and imipramine hydrochloride tricyclic pharmacotherapy, each singly and in combination, were compared in the treatment of nonpsychotic, nonbipolar depressed outpatients. One hundred seven patients were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of active treatment; 64 patients completed the full course of treatment. Rates of attrition were high but not differential. Cognitive therapy and pharmacotherapy did not differ in terms of symptomatic response, either in the primary analyses or in secondary analyses restricted to more severely depressed outpatients. Initial severity did predict response within pharmacotherapy alone, but not within cognitive therapy. Combining cognitive therapy with pharmacotherapy did not markedly improve response over that observed for either modality alone, although such nonsignificant differences as were evident did favor the combined treatment. Two patients died as a consequence of suicide attempts, both of which involved study medication.

Abstract: Since the discovery of surfactant-templated silica mesophases, the development of organic modification schemes to impart functionality to the pore surfaces has received much attention. Most recently, using the general class of compounds referred to as bridged silsesquioxanes (RO){sub 3}Si-R{prime}-Si(OR){sub 3} (Scheme 1), three research groups have reported the formation of a new class of poly(bridgedsilsesquioxane) mesophases BSQMs with integral organic functionality. In contrast to previous hybrid mesophases where organic ligands or molecules are situated on pore surfaces, this class of materials necessarily incorporates the organic constituents into the framework as molecularly dispersed bridging ligands. Although it is anticipated that this new mesostructural organization should result in synergistic properties derived from the molecular scale mixing of the inorganic and organic components, few properties of BSQMs have been measured. In addition samples prepared to date have been in the form of granular precipitates, precluding their use in applications like membranes, fluidics, and low k dielectric films needed for all foreseeable future generations of microelectronics.

Abstract: Unicellular organisms such as yeast have evolved to survive constant fluctuations in their external surroundings by rapidly adapting their internal systems to meet the challenges of each new environment. One aspect of this cellular adaptation is the reorganization of genomic expression to the program required for growth in each environment. The reprogramming of genomic expression can be unveiled using DNA microarrays, which measure the relative transcript abundance of essentially every gene in an organism's genome. Characterizing environmentally triggered gene expression changes provides insights into when, where, and how each gene is expressed and offers a glimpse at the physiological response of the cells to changes in their surroundings. This review will focus on the genomic expression responses of the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to diverse environmental changes, highlighting some of the themes that have emerged from the collection of published yeast genomic expression studies. The results of these studies present insights as to how yeast cells sense and respond to each new environment, and suggest mechanisms that this organism uses to survive stressful environmental changes.
