Abstract: This study examined the relationship between dietary carotenoids, female choice, and male mating success in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Using a split-brood design, male siblings were either raised on a diet enhanced with astaxanthin and canthaxin or fed a basal diet without carotenoids. Males were photographed, and the location, size, and brightness of their red and orange pigment spots on the body were measured. Courtship behaviors were recorded during visual and mating trials. Males fed the carotenoid-enhanced diet had red and orange spots that averaged 2.5 times brighter, spent significantly more time near the female in visual response trials, were preferred by females in visual choice tests, and had a higher mating success than their siblings raised on the carotenoid-free diet. Diet did not affect male size, location or size of the red and orange pigment spots, or the intensity of courtship behavior. The results of this study show that females respond to environmentally-induced variation in the expression of a secondary sexual trait and that this has important consequences for male mating success.

Abstract: This study investigates variation in body growth (cross-sectional height and weight velocity) among a sample of 22 small-scale societies. Considerable variation in growth exists among hunter-gatherers that overlaps heavily with growth trajectories present in groups focusing more on horticulture. Intergroup variation tends to track environmental conditions, with societies under more favorable conditions displaying faster growth and earlier puberty. In addition, faster/earlier development in females is correlated with higher mortality. For example, African ''Pygmies,'' Philippine ''Negritos,'' and the Hiwi of Venezuela are characterized by rela- tively fast child-juvenile growth for their adult body size (used as a proxy for energetic availabil- ity). In these societies, subadult survival is low, and puberty, menarche, and first reproduction are relatively early (given their adult body size), suggesting selective pressure for accelerated de- velopment in the face of higher mortality. Abstract: HIGHLY porous inorganic films have potential applications as dielectric materials, reflective and anti-reflective coatings, flat-panel displays, sensors, catalyst supports and super-insulating architectural glazings1–3. Aerogels4 are the most highly porous solids known, and can now be prepared from inorganic5 and organic6,7 precursors with volume-fraction porosities of up to 99.9% (ref. 8). Aerogels are normally prepared by supercritical extraction of the pore fluid from a wet gel1, which prevents the network collapse that is otherwise induced by capillary forces. But supercritical processing is expensive, hazardous and incompatible with the processing requirements of many potential applications,thus severely restricting the commercial exploitation of aerogels. Here we describe a means of preparing aerogels by a simple dip-coating method at ambient pressure without the need for supercriti-cal extraction. We add surface groups to the inorganic gel which make drying shrinkage reversible9: as the solvent is withdrawn, the gel springs back to a porous state. We can generate aerogel films with 98.5% porosity using this approach. We anticipate that it will greatly expand the commercial applications of these materials.

Abstract: Pulmonary function measures reflect respiratory health and are used in the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We tested genome-wide association with forced expiratory volume in 1 second and the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity in 48,201 individuals of European ancestry with follow up of the top associations in up to an additional 46,411 individuals. We identified new regions showing association (combined P < 5 × 10(-8)) with pulmonary function in or near MFAP2, TGFB2, HDAC4, RARB, MECOM (also known as EVI1), SPATA9, ARMC2, NCR3, ZKSCAN3, CDC123, C10orf11, LRP1, CCDC38, MMP15, CFDP1 and KCNE2. Identification of these 16 new loci may provide insight into the molecular mechanisms regulating pulmonary function and into molecular targets for future therapy to alleviate reduced lung function.
