Progress in Flow Battery Research and Development

Abstract: The past few decades have shown a rapid and continuous exhaustion of the available energy resources which may lead to serious energy global crises. Researchers have been focusing on developing new and renewable energy resources to meet the increasing fuel demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A surge of research effort is also being directed towards replacing fossil fuel based vehicles with hybrid and electric alternatives. Energy storage is now seen as a critical element in future "smart grid and electric vehicle" applications. Electrochemical energy storage systems offer the best combination of efficiency, cost and flexibility, with redox flow battery systems currently leading the way in this aspect. In this work, a panoramic overview is presented for the various redox flow battery systems and their hybrid alternatives. Relevant published work is reported and critically discussed. A comprehensive study of the available technologies is conducted in terms of technical aspects as well as economic and environmental consequences. Some of the flow battery limitations and technical challenges are also discussed and a range of further research opportunities are presented. Of the flow battery technologies that have been investigated, the all-vanadium redox flow battery has received the most attention and has shown most promise in various pre-commercial to commercial stationary applications to date, while new developments in hybrid redox fuel cells are promising to lead the way for future applications in mechanically and electrically "refuelable" electric vehicles.

Optical properties of intrinsic silicon at 300 K

Abstract: An updated tabulation is presented of the optical properties of intrinsic silicon relevant to solar cell calculations. the absorption coeficient, refractive index and extinction coeficient at 300 K are tabulated over the 0.25-1.45 μm wavelength range at 0.01 μm intervals.

Modelling the relationship between perceived value, satisfaction and repurchase intentions in a business‐to‐business, services context: an empirical examination

Abstract: Examines the relationship between four key post‐purchase constructs: perceived performance, satisfaction, perceived value, and repurchase intentions, in a causal path framework in an empirical study of business‐to‐business professional services. Attempts to disaggregate performance into its component multiple dimensions, and assess the individual impact of each on post‐purchase evaluation processes. Shows that the effect of perceived value on repurchase intentions is completely mediated through satisfaction. Confirms six performance dimensions, each having a significant impact on both value and satisfaction and adds new insight to our understanding of the respective roles of perceived value, satisfaction and post‐purchase intentions.

Quality driven web services composition

Abstract: The process-driven composition of Web services is emerging as a promising approach to integrate business applications within and across organizational boundaries. In this approach, individual Web services are federated into composite Web services whose business logic is expressed as a process model. The tasks of this process model are essentially invocations to functionalities offered by the underlying component services. Usually, several component services are able to execute a given task, although with different levels of pricing and quality. In this paper, we advocate that the selection of component services should be carried out during the execution of a composite service, rather than at design-time. In addition, this selection should consider multiple criteria (e.g., price, duration, reliability), and it should take into account global constraints and preferences set by the user (e.g., budget constraints). Accordingly, the paper proposes a global planning approach to optimally select component services during the execution of a composite service. Service selection is formulated as an optimization problem which can be solved using efficient linear programming methods. Experimental results show that this global planning approach outperforms approaches in which the component services are selected individually for each task in a composite service.
