Assurance on sustainability reports: an international comparison

Abstract: Globally, companies increasingly publish separate general purpose, nonfinancial (sustainability) reports. Some of these are independently assured and assurers may or may not be from the auditing profession. We seek to understand this emerging voluntary assurance market. Using a sample of 2,113 companies (from 31 countries) that produced sustainability reports between 2002–2004, we use sequential logit analysis to identify the factors associated with the decision to voluntarily purchase assurance and the choice of assurance provider. We hypothesize that a company's need to enhance credibility through assurance and choice of assurance provider will be a function of company‐, industry‐, and country‐related factors. Functionalization of Halloysite Clay Nanotubes by Grafting with γ-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane

Abstract: Surface modification of natural halloysite clay nanotubes with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was investigated. Untreated and modified samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, MAS nuclear magnetic resonance (29Si, 13C, 29Al), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The modification mechanism was found to include not only the direct grafting of APTES onto the hydroxyl groups of the internal walls, edges and external surfaces of the nanotubes but other processes in which oligomerized APTES condensed with the directly grafted APTES to form a cross-linked structure. The thermal and evacuation pretreatment conditions were found to play an important role in controlling the extent and mechanism of the modification. Modeling the determinants of customer satisfaction for business-to-business professional services

Abstract: This research empirically examines for the first time the determinants of customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction (CS/D) in the context of business professional services. The simultaneous effect of key CS/D constructs (expectations, performance, and disconfirmation) and several variables—fairness (equity), purchase situation (novelty, importance, and complexity)—and individual-level variables (decision uncertainty and stakeholding) are examined in a causal path framework. Data were obtained from a two-stage longitudinal survey of client organizations. The results indicated substantial support for the hypothesized model. The effect of purchase situation and individual-level variables (via their indirect affects) rivals that of disconfirmation and expectations in explaining CS/D. Performance was found to affect CS/D directly but not as powerfully as disconfirmation.
