TL;DR: Conjugate preparations purified by gel filtration contained little free form of immunoglobulin G, Fab' or enzyme, and the ability of antibody to bind to antigen was well preserved in conjugates.
Abstract: Glucose oxidase from Aspergillus niger was conjugated with rabbit immunoglobulin G or its monovalent fragments (Fab'). The enzyme was treated with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of N-(4-carboxycyclohexylmethyl)-maleimide to introduce maleimide groups, which were then allowed to react with thiol groups of reduced IgG or Fab'. More than 40% of immunoglobulin G, Fab' and enzyme used could be conjugated without self-coupling. The enzyme activity decreased about 26 and 15% upon conjugation with immunoglobulin G and Fab', respectively, and the ability of antibody to bind to antigen was well preserved in conjugates. Conjugate preparations purified by gel filtration contained little free form of immunoglobulin G, Fab' or enzyme. Both the cross-link and enzyme activity in Fab' conjugate were stable at pH 6 - 7 at 4°C for at least 6 months.

TL;DR: In this article, a large class of simple differential systems which allow to study some aspects of the transition to stochasticity are presented. But these systems describe a particle, in a harmonic potential, subjected to an external force whose time derivative depends on the position of the particle only.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that for arbitrary ν > 0 and ǫ > 0, there exists a global solution in L∞[0,∞ Open image in new window (ℝ)].
Abstract: We are concerned with the global (in time) regularity properties of the Burgers MRCM equation, which arises in the theory of turbulence (with α = 1) Open image in new window where U(t,·) is of positive type and where the dissipativity α is a nonnegative real number. It is shown that for arbitrary ν > 0 and ɛ > 0, there exists a global solution in L∞[0,∞ Open image in new window (ℝ)]. If ν > 0 and α > αcr = 1/2, smoothness of initial data persists indefinitely. If 0 ν1(α), whereas for 0 < ν < ν2 (α) the second spatial derivative at the origin blows up after a finite time. It is conjectured that with a suitable choice of αcr, similar results hold for the Navier-Stokes equation.

TL;DR: Clinical, haematological and biochemical features in five patients with non‐excretory myeloma were similar to those found in excretoryMyeloma, showing differences only in relation to the absence of serum or urinary monoclonal immunoglobin.
Abstract: Summary. The clinical and laboratory features in five patients with non-excretory myeloma are described including plasma cell immunofluorescence and, in two cases, ultrastructure. Findings are compared with those in similar patients previously reported, and those in excretory disease. Clinical, haematological and biochemical features were similar to those found in excretory myeloma, showing differences only in relation to the absence of serum or urinary monoclonal immunoglobin. Cellular cytological and ultrastructural features allowed no differentiation from excretory cells. Within this non-excretory group distinction between secretory and non-secretory myeloma cells is possible on the basis of immunofluorescence. Differing patterns of intermittent excretion occurred in three of these patients.

TL;DR: The requirement of this orchid for a nitrogen source can be satisfied with casamino acids; no mineral source can play the same role, but in presence of the organic source, the addition of ammonium nitrogen is an improving factor while nitric nitrogen is unfavourable as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Summary Orchis laxiflora Lamk. grown from seeds in asymbiotic cultures has a special need for thiamine which is necessary for its development; riboflavin though it has a favourable influence on germination is unable to replace it. The requirement of this orchid for a nitrogen source can be satisfied with casamino acids; no mineral nitrogen source can play the same role, but in presence of the organic source, the addition of ammonium nitrogen is an improving factor while nitric nitrogen is unfavourable.

TL;DR: A small green flagellate living in the jelly surrounding the capsule of the radiolarian Thalassolampe margarodes is described as a new species in the genus Pedinomonas (Prasinophyceae) as anew species, P. symbiotica.
Abstract: A small green flagellate living in the jelly surrounding the capsule of the radiolarian Thalassolampe margarodes, is described here after a study of its fine structure. It occurs regularly at Villefranche-sur-Mer, on the French Mediterranean coast, constantly associated with Thalassolampe. The characteristic asymmetric body, the single flagellum, the occurrence of a second flagellum before cell-division, the bright green chloroplast and the presence of starch around the pyrenoid, allow it to be placed in the genus Pedinomonas (Prasinophyceae) as a new species, P. symbiotica.

TL;DR: It is concluded that adhesiveness to substratum controls the directionality of fibroblast locomotion as follows: cell-to-substrate adhesion is necessary to stabilize the leading edge and to promote the organization of microfilaments in bundles; the stabilization of the leading Edge and the axial organization provided by the actin cables are required for the persistence of direction of motion.

Abstract: In optical astronomy, images are highly degraded by atmospheric turbulence. The diameter of the seeing disk may vary from 0.2 arcseconds to 10 arcseconds or more according to weather conditions. A typical diameter is of the order of 2 arcseconds which is the angular resolution of a 6cm lens at the diffraction limit.

TL;DR: In this paper, a single photoelectric scanning detector is used to record the speckle pattern, and real-time data processing is achieved using a power spectrum analyser, which is in substantial agreement with Korff's log-normal assumptions.
Abstract: Lens-atmosphere modulation transfer function measurements are presented for speckle interferometry using the 193 cm telescope of the Observatoire de Haute Provence, France. A single photoelectric scanning detector is used to record the speckle pattern, and real-time data processing is achieved using a power spectrum analyser. Normal and log-normal models are used to compare theory with experiment. The results are in substantial agreement with Korff's log-normal assumptions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the behavior of Pyrus malus L. cv. and found that the embryo dormancy was deeper in the distal part of the cotyledons than the root.
Abstract: Bound abscisic acid and embryo dormancy in Pyrus malus. The first part of this work was devoted to the study of the behaviour of Pyrus malus L. cv. Golden Delicious embryos cultivated in vitro. At the beginning of the experiment, either the root (RM) or the distal part of the cotyledons (CM) was immersed in the medium. For embryos directly isolated from the fruits at harvest time, as well as for embryos submitted to a 3-month post-maturation treatment at 4°C, the dormancy was deeper in CM cultures than in RM. The use of gibberellins (GA4 or GA7) emphasized these differences. The second part of this work was devoted to the study of free and bound forms of ABA (cis and trans isomers) in embryos isolated from the fruits at harvest time and cultivated by the RM or CM procedure during 3 weeks. The biochemical data obtained indicated in both cases the existence of the following three processes: (A) Mobilization of the bound ABA with the consequent release of free ABA; this was particularly important in CM. (B) Metabolism of free ABA: the isomerization into trans-ABA only partly accounted for the decrease in the content of free ABA which was much greater in RM than in CM. (C) Transport of ABA towards the root, the result being an accumulation of free ABA in the root, much greater in CM than in RM; this would account for the deeper dormancy in CM than in RM.

TL;DR: In this paper, a systematic PCILO study of the conformation of the nucleic acid backbone was conducted, where the authors mainly studied the ω and ω phosphodiester torsion angles of the disugar triphosphate model as a simultaneous function of the sugar nature, ribose or deoxyribose, and the different combinations of sugar ring puckers.
Abstract: This paper reports a systematic PCILO study of the conformation of the nucleic acid backbone. The authors principally studied the ω′ and ω phosphodiester torsion angles of the disugar triphosphate model as a simultaneous function of (1) the sugar nature, ribose or deoxyribose, (2) the different combinations of the sugar ring puckers C(2′)-endo-C(2′)-endo, C(3′)-endo-C(3′)-endo, C(3′)-endo-C(2′)-endo, and C(2′)-endo-C(3′)-endo, and (3) the different conformations around the ψ(C4′–C5′) exocyclic bond. The dependence of the (ω′,ω) conformational energy maps upon these different factors, is discussed. The results are in very good agreement with the observed structures of ribonucleic (RNA10, RNA11, A′-RNA12, tRNAPhe) and deoxyribonucleic acids (D-DNA, C-DNA 9.3, B-DNA 10, A-DNA 11). Thus the validity of this model, the disugar triphosphate unit, is ensured. The main conclusions that can be drawn from this systematic study are the following: 1 The torsion around P-05′ (angle ω) is, as a general rule, more flexible than the torsion around P-03′ (angle ω′). 2 There is no notable difference between the ribose–triphosphate units and the deoxyribose–triphosphate units for the C(3′)-endo–C(3′)-endo and C(3′)-endo–C(2′)-endo sugar puckers. 3 The deoxyribose–triphosphate units with C(2′)-endo–C(2′)-endo and C(2′)-endo–C(3′)-endo sugar puckers show much more ω′ flexibility than the ribose–triphosphate units with the same sugar puckers and cis position for the 2′hydroxyl group. 4 The preferred values of ω′ are independent of the sugar nature (ribose or deoxyribose) and of ψ values; they are correlated with the sugar pucker of the first sugar-phosphate unit: C(3′)-endo-C(3′)-endo and C(3′)-endo-C(2′)-endo puckers ⟹ ω′ ≃ 240° (g− region) C(2′)-endo-C(2′)-endo and C(2′)-endo-C(3′)-endo puckers ⟹ ω′ 180° (t region) 5 The preferred values of ω are independent of the nature and the puckering of the sugars; they are correlated with the rotational state of the torsion angle ψ(C4′–C5′): ψ ≃ 60° (gg) ⟹ ω ≃ 300° (g−), ψ ≃ 180° (gt) or 300° (tg) ⟹ ω ≃ 60° (g+)

Abstract: Measurements of the energy spectra of infra-red images of stellar point sources were made at the Coude focus of the 3·8 m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, U.S.A. A scanning slit was used to record the irradiance distribution in the image plane. Experimental results are compared with theoretical models, assuming either a circular gaussian or a log-normal statistic for the perturbation of the complex amplitude of the incoming wavefront. In both cases the telescope central obscuration is taken into account. A good fit is obtained with the log-normal model for the highest scanning rate.

TL;DR: An algorithm which allows to find out the M-output level quantizer characteristics minimizing the distortion with respect to both the Mean-Squared- Error (MSE) and Mean-Absolute-Error (MAE) criterions is described.
Abstract: This paper describes an algorithm which allows to find out the M-output level quantizer characteristics minimizing the distortion with respect to both the Mean-Squared-Error (MSE) and Mean-Absolute-Error (MAE) criterions This algorithm can be used with any kind of signal amplitude distributions ranging from analytical probability density functions (pdf) to experimental 'density functions In the particular case of known pdf like uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian and Gamma densities, it gives results which agree or are better than those previously published /2,4,5,6/ The same type of algorithmic procedure may also be used for block-of-samples quantization; in this case the statistics average must be replaced by the time average In addition, the simplicity of the proposed algorithm allows to envisage a real-time, microprocessor based, block adaptive quantizer implementation in which the quantizer parameters are periodically updated and transmitted with each data block This technique can be used, for instance, to optimally quantize the speech coding parameters derived from the low bit rates speech compression algorithm as described in [7]

Abstract: The thermoluminescence (TL) properties of calcium hydroxyapatite obtained by hydrothermal synthesis are studied between 77 and 650 K after X-irradiation. Five out of the nine impurities added prove to be activators: Mn2+, Ce3+, Dy3+, Pb2+ and Sb3+. The influence of synthesis conditions on the TL as well as that of the annealing procedure is shown. The 132 K peak is specific of calcium hydroxyapatite and its origin is discussed. The results are compared with those obtained for a natural sample (Holly Springs).
