TL;DR: This study is seen as a first step leading towards a much wider study involving somatizations in a psychodiagnostic endeavor, as well as throwing more light into the problem of classification of psychiatric disorders in Nigeria.
Abstract: In a pre-study it was seen that somatization complaints formed the basis of the distress of the mentally ill in Nigeria and there was need for somatic complaints to be employed in evolving a psychodiagnostic system which would lead to a better understanding of mental illness in Nigeria. In pursuit of this goal, some 65 somatic complaints were drawn from protocols of patients treated at the Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, from 1978–1981. These complaints were administered in form of questions to 179 psychiatric patients and 349 students (normals) of the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu. Forty-six of the 65 complaints distinguished male normals from the psychiatric patients and 30 items of the 65 distinguished the female normals from the female psychiatric patients at the 0.05 level or better. In a further step each subject was rated. A positive response to each of the discriminant items was scored as one point. The mean, standard deviation and cumulative frequency percentage of both groups were calculated. These values are recommended for use in discriminating normals from the mentally ill in Nigeria. This study is seen as a first step leading towards a much wider study involving somatizations in a psychodiagnostic endeavor, as well as throwing more light into the problem of classification of psychiatric disorders in Nigeria.

TL;DR: The farming population in these villages had the highest infection rates and it is estimated that at least 100 000 of these farmers contract the disease each year, resulting in lowered agricultural productivity.
Abstract: Guinea-worm disease (dracontiasis) has been found in the north-eastern zone of Anambra State, Nigeria. Prevalence rates in rural villages were very high (50–75%), especially in those dependent on a system of artificial ponds (the ‘Okpuru’ system) for their drinking water. Two species of cyclopoid copepods, Thermocyclops nigerianus and Mcsocyclops leuckarti, widely recognized as intermediate hosts for Dracuncutus medinensis, were recovered from drinking water sources in the endemic areas. The relative copepod densities and their infection levels in the various waterbodies confirmed that the artificial ponds in the area were the significant foci of guinea-worm infections. The farming population in these villages had the highest infection rates and it is estimated that at least 100 000 of these farmers contract the disease each year, resulting in lowered agricultural productivity. The clinical manifestations of the disease followed the accepted pattern; 68·3% of the guinea-worm ulcers were secondarily infected...

TL;DR: In this article, a distant observer, who uses measuring instruments not affected by gravity, cannot detect a positive value for the acceleration of gravity, depends on the relationship between the transverse and radial Schwarzschild velocities.
Abstract: To the distant observer, who uses measuring instruments not affected by gravity, gravitational repulsion can occur anywhere in the Schwarzschild field. It depends on the relationship between the transverse and radial Schwarzschild velocities. On the other hand, local observers, whose measuring instruments are affected by gravity, cannot detect a positive value for the acceleration of gravity.

TL;DR: Field trials were carried out using carbaryl, formetanate, phosmet and carbofuran to test the relative efficiency of these insecticides for controlling the pests of leaf‐eating flea beetles at Nsukka, Nigeria.
Abstract: Leaf‐eating flea beetles, Podagrica spp., are the most destructive pests of okra at Nsukka, Nigeria. Field trials were carried out using carbaryl, formetanate, phosmet and carbofuran to test the relative efficiency of these insecticides for controlling the pests. Carbofuran, applied in the planting hole at the rate of 1.5 kg a.i./ha, reduced the numbers of Podagrica spp. but was initially phytotoxic to the young plants. Applications of the other insecticides at the rate of 0.5 kg a.i./ha also reduced pest incidence but were highly phytotoxic. Yields were highest in the carbofuran‐treated plots. The significance of the results is discussed in relation to the possibly low economic threshold of the pests.

TL;DR: An alternative to the loss-in-predictability criterion used by Baum (1979) is proposed, which has a simple operational meaning and is related to the usual F-ratio test and can be used as a formal test of the hypothesis that matching occurs.
Abstract: In a review of 103 sets of data from 23 different studies of choice, Baum (1979) concluded that whereas undermatching was most commonly observed for responses, the time measure generally conformed to the matching relation. A reexamination of the evidence presented by Baum concludes that undermatching is the most commonly observed finding for both measures. Use of the coefficient of determination by both Baum (1979) and de Villiers (1977) for assessing when matching occurs is criticized on statistical grounds. An alternative to the loss-in-predictability criterion used by Baum (1979) is proposed. This alternative statistic has a simple operational meaning and is related to the usual F-ratio test. It can therefore be used as a formal test of the hypothesis that matching occurs. Baum (1979) also suggests that slope values of between .90 and 1.11 can be considered good approximations to matching. It is argued that the establishment of a fixed interval as a criterion for determining when matching occurs, is inappropriate. A confidence interval based on the data from any given experiment is suggested as a more useful method of assessment.

TL;DR: In this article, a modified procedure for determination of lysine in maize seeds was presented, which was economical, accurate and fast and has been used to determine the available lysines in large numbers of maize grains.
Abstract: This paper reports on a modified procedure for determination of lysine in maize seeds. The modified procedure was economical, accurate and fast, and has been used to determine the available lysine in large numbers of maize grains. Protein sufficiently representative of total protein was extracted from samples ground in a water-cooled grinder. It was proposed that for samples with more than 15% protein the volume of NaOH-ETOH extractant be doubled. For maize samples with 15 ~ 30% oil content, 20 ml of acetone was used for fat extraction, as opposed to 15 ml of acetone used for samples with less than 15% oil content. The sub-sampling variation was not significant for the modified 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene-l-sulfonic acid (TNBS) procedure. The correlation coefficient between lysine values determined by the amino acid analyser and the TNBS method for 90 opaque-2 samples was high (r = 0.806). The coefficient of variation for TNBS was 6.5% against 12.6% for the microbiological assay (MBA), indicating that more vari...

TL;DR: Fresh fruit samples investigated showed that both samples retained their freshness equally, and the mineral elements present and the crude fibre showed no significant difference between samples.
Abstract: The mineral content and nutritional value of Chrysophyllum albidum fruit has been studied. Fresh fruit samples, both untreated and treated with 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, were investigated. Analyses for moisture, ash, crude fibre, oil, protein, starch, sugar, ascorbic acid, and mineral elements contents in the edible portions of each sample showed that both samples retained their freshness equally. The mineral elements present (K, P, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Al and Zn) and the crude fibre also showed no significant difference between samples. The contribution of all of these minerals to the Recommended Dietary Allowance was quite significant.

TL;DR: A total of 1030 specimens of scrapings, hair and nail clippings were examined for the presence of dermatophytes and Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated species represented, followed by T. soudanense‐79 (22.2%) isolates and T. mentagrophytes‐60 (17.1%) isolate.
Abstract: Summary: A total of 1030 specimens of scrapings, hair and nail clippings were examined for the presence of dermatophytes. Out of these, 351 specimens were found positive for dermatophytes. Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated species represented by 107 (30.2%) isolates, followed by T. soudanense-79 (22.2%) isolates and T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes-60 (17.1%) isolates. Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum audouinii were represented by 23 (6.2%) and 18 (5.5%) isolates respectively. The rarity of zoophilic dermatophytes was conspicuous. All the isolates of T. rubrum were of the ‘African variety’. T. soudanense was frequently isolated from lesions on scalp as well as from lesions on other parts of the body. Infections due to M. audouinii and T. soudanense were predominant in children, whereas those due to T. rubrum, E. floccosum and T. mentagrophytes were predominant in adults.

TL;DR: Lysolecithin, one of the hydrolytic products of phosphatidyl choline by phospholipase A was prepared and found able to hemolyse human red blood cells and ‘clear’ rat skin and muscle homogenates and the proteinase was able to digest human serum proteins.
Abstract: Properties of proteinase(s) and phospholipase A in dialyzed culture filtrate of Basidiobolus haptosporus were studied. Lysolecithin, one of the hydrolytic products of phosphatidyl choline by phospholipase A was prepared and found able to hemolyse human red blood cells and ‘clear’ rat skin and muscle homogenates. The proteinase was able to digest human serum proteins. The pathogenic mechanism employed by this fungus may involve hydrolysis of lecithin to yield lysolecithin, which destroys cell membranes thereby liberating intracellular contents. The protein components of these contents are then digested by the proteinase(s) yielding amino acids which along with other metabolites serve as nutrients for the growth of the pathogen.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanism of bubble deformation based on the dissipation of the kinetic energy of the injected gas is proposed, and the theoretical results are compared with experimental measurements of bubbles of dispersion during high-velocity injection of air and hydrogen through submerged plate orifices into water.
Abstract: When pressurised gas is injected into liquid at high velocity, the bubbles of dispersion are not exactly spherical as normally assumed in theory. High speed photographs of the dispersion show that the bubbles are spheroidal and distinctly prolate in the direction of gas flow. A mechanism of bubble deformation based on the dissipation of the kinetic energy of the injected gas is proposed in this work. The theoretical results are compared with experimental measurements of bubble deformation during high-velocity injection of air and hydrogen through submerged plate orifices into water.
