TL;DR: In this article, the results of 30 vertical electrical soundings carried out in Makurdi, Benue state capital, north-central Nigeria to evaluate aquifer protective capacity and soil corrosivity of overburden units in the study area were presented.
Abstract: This paper presents result of 30 vertical electrical soundings carried out in Makurdi, Benue state capital, north–central Nigeria to evaluate aquifer protective capacity and soil corrosivity of overburden units in the study area. This was done using the Schlumberger electrode array to obtain the data and was modelled using computer iteration (Winresist software). The field data gives a resolution with 3–4 geoelectric layers and the observed frequencies in curve types include: 30% of KQ, 16.67% of QH, 6.67% of AA and K, 3.33% of HA, Q and A, 10% of H, KH and HK. Using the longitudinal unit conductance (S), the protective capacities of the study area were classified as 36.67% weak, 10% poor, 40% moderate, and 13.33% as good. The corrosivity ratings of the study area show that 10% is strongly corrosive, 23% moderately corrosive, 37% slightly corrosive, and 30% noncorrosive The results reasonably provide information on areas where industries can be sited and iron pipes can be laid in order to safeguard the hydrological setting for resident’s safety in the study area. Regions with moderate/good protective capacity are good sites for locating boreholes.

TL;DR: The OPED elicited better valid estimates of altruistic WTP than BWFU and the potential for more capable people to contribute for the poor in ITNs programmes actually exist and malaria control programmes should explore altruistic contributions as a means to increase net coverage.
Abstract: Objectives: To determine whether the binary with follow-up (BWFU) or open-ended (OPED) contingent valuation question format would yield better valid estimates of altruistic willingness to pay (WTP) and examine the feasibility of using intra-community altruistic contributions to procure insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for the poor in Nigeria. Methods: Structured questionnaires were used to elicit stated altruistic WTP from a random sub-sample of respondents that had either the OPED or BWFU used to elicit WTP in Southeast Nigeria. One month after the survey the respondents were asked to redeem their WTP pledges. Construct validity was determined using econometric analyses while phi correlation was used to determine criterion validity. Findings: More than 57% of the respondents were hypothetically willing to pay for altruism in both BWFU and OPED groups. Altruistic WTP was positively related to respondents WTP for own nets (p<0.01) and nets for other household members (p<0.05) in both groups. A total of 27.0% and 33.1% of the respondents with positive hypothetical WTP in the BWFU and OPED actually contributed. Phi correlation coefficient was 0.23 (95%CI 0.20-0.29) in BWFU and 0.49 (95%CI 0.44-0.54) in OPED. The money realized was used to buy some ITNs which were presented to poor people selected by community leaders. Conclusion: The OPED elicited better valid estimates of altruistic WTP than BWFU. The potential for more capable people to contribute for the poor in ITNs programmes actually exist and malaria control programmes should explore altruistic contributions as a means to increase net coverage. TL;DR: Results show that the aqueous methanol extract has potential use in the management of painful episodes experienced by sickle cell patients and is found to be concentration‐dependent.
Abstract: The aqueous methanol extract (3:1, v/v) of the seeds of Cajanus cajan was investigated for antisickling properties. The extract possessed significant antisickling activity and was found to be concentration-dependent. The kinetics of reversal of presickled erythrocyte (HbSS) cells using the extract at 0.5 mg/mL, 1.0 mg/mL, 1.5 mg/mL, 2.0 mg/mL and 2.5 mg/mL showed first-order kinetics with rate constants of 5.833 × 10−3 min−1, 6.143 × 10−3 min−1, 5.957 × 10−3 min−1 6.00 × 10−3 min−1 and 6.046 × 10−3 min−1, respectively, and with an average half-life 115.6 min. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of free amino acids, phenolic compounds, tannins, globulins and saponins. These results show that the extract has potential use in the management of painful episodes experienced by sickle cell patients. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: Effects of organic carbon sources on cell growth and α-tocopherol productivity in wild and chloroplast-deficient W14ZUL strains of Euglena gracilis under photoheterotrophic culture were investigated and showed the increase in cell growth was particularly high when glucose was added as the sole organic carbon source.
Abstract: Effects of organic carbon sources on cell growth and α-tocopherol productivity in wild and chloroplast-deficient W14ZUL strains of Euglena gracilis under photoheterotrophic culture were investigated. In both strains, the increase in cell growth was particularly high when glucose was added as the sole organic carbon source. On the other hand, α-tocopherol production per dry cell weight was enhanced by adding ethanol. Ethanol addition also increased the chlorophyll concentration in wild strain and mitochondria activity in W14ZUL strain. For effective α-tocopherol production, the effects of mixture of glucose and ethanol were investigated. The results showed that, when a mixture of glucose (6 g/l) and ethanol (4 g/l) was used, α-tocopherol productivity per culture broth was 3.89 × 10−2 mg l−1 h−1, which was higher than the value obtained without addition of organic carbon source (0.92 × 10−2 mg l−1 h−1). In addition, under fed-batch cultivation using an internally illuminated photobioreactor, the α-tocopherol production per culture broth was 23.43 mg/l, giving a productivity of 16.27 × 10−2 mg l−1 h−1.

TL;DR: The study shows an increasing trend in medical admissions at the UNTH, Enugu, with non-communicable diseases and male gender preponderance, while 53% of those affected are in the 30 60 years range.
Abstract: Objective: To study the pattern of medical admissions at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, with a view to determining the disease trend and providing a comparative analysis with the previous study conducted in the same centre in the preceding five-year period. Method: A review of admissions into the medical wards of the UNTH, Enugu, over the five year period between December, 1998 and November, 2003, was done using the register of admissions and discharges; as well as a review of the case file where necessary. Results: The patients admitted during the period numbered 7399, with age range of 15 to 102 years. There were 4324 (58.4%) males and 3075 (41.6%) females, with a male to female ratio of 1.4:1. Disorders of the cardiovascular system accounted for 1389 (18.8%) of the admissions, and those of the central nervous system 1178 (15.9%) while HIV-related disorders accounted for 501 (6.7%) respectively. Non-communicable diseases accounted for 4493 (60.3%) of the cases while communicable diseases accounted for 2906 (39.3%). There were more admissions in the wet season (April to September), with 56.8%, while the month of December cumulatively recorded the least admission rate. The mean hospital stay was 15.5 (±15.4) days. Conclusion: The study shows an increasing trend in medical admissions at the UNTH, Enugu, with noncommunicable diseases and male gender preponderance, while 53% of those affected are in the 30 60 years range. Serious efforts at revamping the health sector services and facilities, and particularly, national and local strategies to combat non-communicable diseases, are emphasized.
