Abstract: Testes from 37 Holstein bulls, 38-99 mo of age, were used to investigate the relationship of Sertoli cell number, Sertoli cell-germ cell ratios and other related factors to daily sperm production (DSP). DSP was assessed by enumeration of spermatids in testicular homogenates, whereas Sertoli cell and germ cell ratios were based on direct counts in 20 round Stage VIII seminiferous tubular cross sections per bull. Numbers of Sertoli cells were calculated as (total homogenization resistant spermatids:spermatid:Sertoli cell ratio)/0.394; the factor of 0.394 adjusted for the presence of homogenization resistant spermatids during only 39.4% of the spermatogenic cycle. Data were subjected to simple linear and second-order regression analyses. Positive linear relationships were observed between DSP and testicular parenchymal weight (p less than 0.005, R = +0.71), DSP per gram (p less than 0.005, R = +0.79), total Sertoli cells (p less than 0.005, R = +0.83), Sertoli cells per gram (p less than 0.01, R = +0.47) and the yield of Step 8 spermatids per Type A spermatogonium (p less than 0.05, R = +0.34). DSP was not related (p greater than 0.10) to the number of germ cells supported per Sertoli cell. Testicular parenchymal weight and DSP per gram were unrelated to each other (p greater than 0.10), but both were related (p less than 0.005) to the total Sertoli cell number (R = +0.61 and +0.62, respectively). Total number of Sertoli cells accounted for more of the variation in DSP between bulls (R2 = 68.2%) than did any other factor examined. It was suggested that total Sertoli cell number may be an important determinant of a bull's spermatogenic potential.

Abstract: To assess the delays and define the causes of delay in presentation and treatment of breast cancer patients inEnugu,Nigeria. Across-sectional survey of breast cancer patients using a semi structured questionnaire. SurgicalOncology unit,University ofNigeriaTeachingHospitalEnugu, (UNTH-E),Nigeria. 164 consecutively presenting breast cancer patients seen between June 1999 andMay 2005. Most of the patients (82.3%) reported for initial evaluation at a modern health facility while 17.5% reported first toAlternative practitioners. Forty six patients (26.4%) presented within a month of noticing the symptoms while 72 (45.3%) delayed more than 3 months. In contrast, 18 (17%) were seen at the site of definitive treatment within one month of seeking help at the initial hospital while 73.4% had a delay of more than 3months after the initial hospital contact. Institutional or physician induced delayswere present in 46.2% of the caseswhile patient related delayswere present in 79.2% of cases.Only use of alternative practitioners for initial treatmentwas significantly related to delays ofmore than threemonths before presentation (p= 0.017). Abstract: Background: The parasitic skin disease tungiasis (caused by the flea Tunga penetrans) affects resource-poor communities in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. Prevalences in endemic areas are high, and severe pathology occurs commonly. However, risk factors for infestation have never been assessed in Africa. Methods and Findings: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Erekiti, a rural community in Lagos State (Nigeria), where tungiasis is endemic. Individuals were examined clinically for the presence of tungiasis, and a questionnaire was applied. Data from 643 individuals (86.6% of the target population) were analyzed; 252 (42.5%) were infested with T. penetrans .I n the multivariate logistic regression analysis, presence of pigs on the compounds (adjusted odds ratio=17.98; 95% confidence interval: 5.55–58.23), sand or clay floor inside houses (9.33; 5.06–17.19), and having the common resting place outside the house (7.14; 4.0–14.29) were the most important risk factors identified. The regular use of closed footwear (0.34; 0.18–0.62) and the use of insecticides indoors (0.2; 0.05–0.83) were protective against infestation. The population attributable fractions associated with tungiasis were: sand or clay floor inside the house (73.7%), resting usually outside the house (65.5%), no regular use of closed footwear (51.1%), and pigs on the compound (37.9%). Conclusion: The presence of tungiasis in Erekiti is determined to an important extent by a limited number of modifiable variables. Effective and sustainable intervention measures addressing these factors need to be implemented in this and other West African communities with high disease burden.

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of the study was to formulate and evaluate surface-modified solid lipid nanoparticles sustained delivery system of timolol hydrogen maleate, a prototype ocular drug using a human cornea construct. Materials and Methods: Surface-modified solid lipid nanoparticles containing timolol with and without phospholipid were formulated by melt emulsification with high-pressure homogenization and characterized by particle size, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, encapsulation efficiency, and in vitro drug release. Drug transport studies through cornea bioengineered from human donor cornea cells were carried out using a modified Franz diffusion cell and drug concentration analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Results show that surface-modified solid lipid nanoparticles possessed very small particles (42.9 ± 0.3 nm, 47.2 ± 0.3 nm, 42.7 ± 0.7 nm, and 37.7 ± 0.3 nm, respectively for SM-SLN 1, SM-SLN 2, SM-SLN 3, and SM-SLN 4) with low polydispersity indices, increased encapsulation eff...
