TL;DR: V. vulnificus is a ubiquitous organism, both geographically and in a variety of environmental sources, although it occurs in relatively low numbers, and the public health significance of this organism and of the other unidentified lactose-fermenting Vibrio species is discussed.
Abstract: During the summer of 1981, 3,887 sucrose-negative vibrios were isolated from seawater, sediment, plankton, and animal samples taken from 80 sites from Miami, Fla., to Portland, Maine. Of these, 4.2% were able to ferment lactose. The lactose-positive strains isolated from the various samples correlated positively with pH and turbidity of the water, vibrios in the sediment and oysters, and total bacterial counts in oysters. Negative correlations were obtained for water salinity. Numerical taxonomy was performed on 95 of the lactose-fermenting environmental isolates and 23 reference strains. Five clusters resulted, with the major cluster containing 33 of the environmental isolates and all of the Vibrio vulnificus reference strains. The 33 isolates, which produced an acid reaction in lactose broth within hours of initial inoculation, represented 20% of all lactose-fermenting vibrios studied. These isolates were nearly identical phenotypically to clinical strains of V. vulnificus studied by the Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, Ga., and by our laboratory, and their identification was confirmed by DNA-DNA hybridization studies. V. vulnificus was isolated from all sample types and from Miami to Cape Cod, Mass., and comparison of the environmental parameters of the eight subsites yielding this species with those of all 80 subsites revealed no significant differences. The majority of the isolates were obtained from animals, with clams providing most (84%) of these. On injection into mice, 82% of the V. vulnificus isolates resulted in death. Members of the remaining four clusters contained strains which differed from V. vulnificus in such phenotypic traits as luminescence and in urease or H2S production. None of the other reference cultures, including nine other Vibrio species, were contained in the remaining clusters, and these isolates could not be identified. Most of these were also lethal for mice. Phenotypic differences, potential pathogenicity, and geographic distribution of the five clusters were examined. It is concluded that V. vulnificus is a ubiquitous organism, both geographically and in a variety of environmental sources, although it occurs in relatively low numbers. The public health significance of this organism and of the other unidentified lactose-fermenting Vibrio species is discussed.

TL;DR: In the present study the spatial location of picture and word stimuli was varied across four quadrants of photographic slides and recognition memory for items and memory for spatial location were tested.
Abstract: In the present study the spatial location of picture and word stimuli was varied across four quadrants of photographic slides. Young and old people received either pictures or words to study and were told to remember either just the item or the item and its location. Recognition memory for items and memory for spatial location were tested. A pictorial superiority effect occurred for both old and young people's item recognition. Additionally, instructions to study position decreased item memory and facilitated position memory in both age groups. Spatial memory was markedly superior for pictures compared with matched words for old and young adults. The results are interpreted within the Hasher and Zacks framework of automatic processing. The implications of the data for designing mnemonic aids for elderly persons are considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Grief Experience Inventory and MMPI were administered on both occasions and responses were separated into three groups according to the mode of death; sudden death, long-term chronic illness (N = 27), and short term chronic illness death (N= 26).
Abstract: Eighty-six bereaved participants were interviewed shortly after the death of a close family member and again eighteen months later. The Grief Experience Inventory and MMPI were administered on both occasions. Responses were separated into three groups according to the mode of death; sudden death (N = 33), long-term chronic illness (N = 27), and short-term chronic illness death (N = 26). Analysis of data yielded no statistically significant differences among groups but indicated some important trends. The short-term chronic illness group made the most favorable adjustment to bereavement. While the sudden death and long-term chronic illness death groups sustained higher intensities of bereavement at eighteen months, there appeared to be both qualitative and quantitative differences between the reactions of these two groups. The sudden death group indicated an internalized emotional response described as an “anger-in” or intropunitive response causing them to sustain prolonged physical stress. The long-term ...

TL;DR: The Gold Coast (modern Ghana) was severely attacked by the influenza pandemic of 1918-19 as mentioned in this paper, which was introduced by shipping along the southern coast and overland across the northern frontier.
Abstract: The Gold Coast (modern Ghana) was severely attacked by the influenza pandemic of 1918–19. The disease was introduced by shipping along the southern coast and overland across the northern frontier. As was true elsewhere on the continent, the spread of influenza was greatly facilitated by the new colonial transportation network. Quarantines and other preventive measures were futile and therapy, African or British, could do no more than alleviate symptoms. Influenza struck the majority of the population, but mortality rates varied regionally and, to some extent, by occupation. Deaths were especially numerous in the far north. The influenza epidemic killed 100,000 or more people in less than six months and was almost certainly the worst short-term demographic disaster in the history of Ghana.

TL;DR: The results suggest that women who experience pain with menstruation differ from women who do not differ in their perception of pain across the menstrual cycle.
Abstract: Reactions to radiant heat stimuli were measured in dysmenorrheic and nondysmenorrheic women across a 4-week period. (Dysmenorrhea is a condition in which pain accompanies menstruation.) Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve parameters were computed for each of the phases of the menstrual cycle. When painful stimuli were used, a group × phase interaction was found in the analysis on the d’e scores. Nondysmenorrheic women were found to vary cyclically in their ability to discriminate painful from nonpainful stimuli, whereas dysmenorrheic women showed consistent pain reactions throughout the whole cycle. Cyclic effects were not apparent in the analyses on the response criteria or in those on reactions to thermal stimuli. The results suggest that women who experience pain with menstruation differ from women who do not differ in their perception of pain across the menstrual cycle. The sensory differences between the groups of women were not characteristic of responses to thermal stimuli and were not accompanied by shifts in willingness to report pain. Biochemical differences between dysmenorrheic and nondysmenorrheic women are believed to be the cause of the differences in pain reactions across phase.

TL;DR: Significant differences exist between the mean failure temperature differentials, ΔT, for the composite opaque-body porcelain discs and body porcelains tested.
Abstract: Thermal shock testing of opaque porcelain-body porcelain discs and body porcelain discs was performed on three porcelain products. Significant differences exist between the mean failure temperature differentials, delta T, for the composite opaque-body porcelain discs. The residual tensile stress and the transient tensile stress distribution are more severe for one of the three porcelains tested.

TL;DR: Self-perceived age changes in sex role self concept reported by three groups of adults produced strikingly similar patterns, and both men and women evidenced high masculine self descriptions related to middle age followed by decreases in masculinity in later life.
Abstract: A prospective/retrospective study of sex role self concept was conducted in order to explore the hypothesis that adult men and women experience a convergence of sex roles in later life. Young (age seventeen to twenty-nine), middle aged (age thirty to fifty-nine), and older (age sixty to eighty-five) adults (twenty-one male, forty-one female in each group) rated themselves on Bern Sex Role Inventory items, first describing themselves at age twenty, next at age forty-five, and finally at age seventy. Self-perceived age changes in sex role self concept reported by these three groups of adults produced strikingly similar patterns. In each case, both men and women evidenced high masculine self descriptions related to middle age (projected age forty-five) followed by decreases in masculinity in later life (projected age seventy). Only the projections of middle aged respondents displayed even marginally significant evidence in favor of sex role convergence.

TL;DR: The authors examined the immediate responses to the headwater flooding of two structurally homogeneous neighborhoods in Charlotte, North Carolina, one predominantly black and the other predominantly white, and found that the distress and disruption caused by noncatastrophic floods are a genuine neighborhood issue, even in neighborhoods with other serious problems like crime, lack of parks and recreation areas, speeding traffic, and unemployment.
Abstract: This article examines the immediate responses to the headwater flooding of two structurally homogeneous neighborhoods in Charlotte, North Carolina, one predominantly black and the other predominantly white. The results of the research suggest that the distress and disruption caused by noncatastrophic floods are a genuine neighborhood issue, even in neighborhoods with other serious problems like crime, lack of parks and recreation areas, speeding traffic, and unemployment. Faced with frequent flood damage, a significant number of property owners were willing to assume some monetary costs for protecting their homes and safety, but residents of the white neighborhood were not amenable to remedial measures that would necessitate relocation out of their neighborhood. Respondents in both neighborhoods appeared to possess a realistic understanding of the causes of flooding and its financial impact on property values. However, a significant subgroup of blacks viewed flooding as an uncontrollable natural event and...

TL;DR: This study indicates that the previously reported high degree of correlation between dilatometry-derived compatibility index values and ΔT values may be related to porcelain tensile strengths and defect density.
Abstract: An analysis of the stresses which develop during air cooling and shock testing of a simulated porcelain-metal crown is presented. Strain gauges were used to experimentally determine porcelain surface stresses during shock testing. The finite element method was used to calculate stress patterns throughout the simulated crown. This study indicates that the previously reported high degree of correlation between dilatometry-derived compatibility index values and ΔT values may be related to porcelain tensile strengths and defect density.

TL;DR: The responses indicated that children have clear sex-typed expectations concerning occupational competence and that children's perceptions of these occupations reflect an evaluative bias and not simply a recognition of adult stereotypes or actual rates of employment in the positions.
Abstract: Children ranging in age from 5 1/2 to 9 years old selected either a male or a female doll in response to questions about who would be “better” at an occupation. The occupations were selected so that half were female and half were male sex-typed occupations. The responses indicated that children have clear sex-typed expectations concerning occupational competence. While the differences between the “female” and “male” occupations were significant at each age level, the interaction revealed an increasing adherence to the stereotypes with increasing age. A sex of child main effect was produced by the tendency of female children to select the female doll more often than did male children. The results are interpreted as demonstrating that children's perceptions of these occupations reflect an evaluative bias and not simply a recognition of adult stereotypes or actual rates of employment in the positions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the X-ray powder diffraction data of the product obtained at 700 °C were indexed in the monoclinic system using earlier data from single-crystal measurements.
Abstract: Gadolinium ultraphosphate (GdP5O14) was prepared for the first time by the solid state reaction of Gd2O3 with (NH4)2HPO4. The X-ray powder diffraction data of the product obtained at 700 °C were indexed in the monoclinic system using earlier data from single-crystal measurements. The orthorhombic form of GdP5O14 was observed at 900 °C. The lattice parameters for GdP5O14 are a = 8.734(3) A , b = 8.887(2) A ,c = 12.926(4) A and β = 90.60(3)° for the monoclinic form and a = 8.733(4) A , b = 8.885(1) A and c = 12.929(2) A for the orthorhombic form. The IR spectrum of the 700 °C form is slightly different from that of the 900 °C form. This corresponds to a minor structural difference between the monoclinic and orthorhombic forms; this difference was also apparent in the X-ray diffraction data.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that unanimous cases should not have been included, for the votes in these cases reflect both legal and attitudinal variables, and plot Douglas's support for civil liberties in non-unanimous cases.
Abstract: Ulmer claimed, contrary to the common wisdom, that Justice Douglas's support for civil liberties during his tenure on the Supreme Court conformed to a parabolic curve. Ulmer's conclusion is based on both unanimous and nonunanimous cases. We argue that unanimous cases should not have been included, for the votes in these cases reflect both legal and attitudinal variables. When we plot Douglas's support for civil liberties in nonunanimous cases we discover that he was a consistent civil libertarian from the beginning of the Warren Court until the end of his career.

TL;DR: Pavlov never gave up the expectation that American behaviorism would accept his conditional reflex theory and saw in Hunter's 1932 statements a support of his assumptions.
Abstract: Pavlov's development of the conditional reflex theory coincided with the rise of American behaviorism. Substituting an objective physiology for a subjective psychology, Pavlov saw in the rise of American behaviorism a clear confirmation of his method and theory. But in the early 1930s, Lashley attacked Pavlov's theory of specific cerebral localization of function, proposing instead the concept of an internal cerebral organization; Guthrie objected to Pavlov's centralist interpretation of conditioning, proposing instead a peripheralist interpretation; while Hull challenged Pavlov's theory of sleep and hypnosis as the manifestations of inhibition. Pavlov replied with critiques of Lashley's, Guthrie's, and Hull's views, and, convinced that Lashley and Guthrie misunderstood his position, repeated his method's and theory's basic propositions. Yet, Pavlov never gave up the expectation that American behaviorism would accept his conditional reflex theory and saw in Hunter's 1932 statements a support of his assumptions.

TL;DR: In this article, a random differential equation arises in stream pollution models when the initial conditions are stochastic and the stream velocity is distance dependent, and the mean squared solution gives the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and the dissolved oxygen (DO) at any distance downstream from the pollution source.
Abstract: A random differential equation arises in stream pollution models when the initial conditions are stochastic and the stream velocity is distance dependent. The mean squared solution gives the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and the dissolved oxygen (DO) at any distance downstream from the pollution source. The probability density function and some of the moments of the BOD and DO are obtained, thus completely characterizing the BOD and DO process. An example illustrates the results and compares them with previous ones.
