TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis, structure, and redox and photophysical properties of (Ru(bpy)/sub n/(BL)/sub 3-n/)/sup 2 +/, where n = 0-2, bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, and BL is 2.3-bis(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline, are described.
Abstract: The synthesis, structure, and redox and photophysical properties of (Ru(bpy)/sub n/(BL)/sub 3-n/)/sup 2 +/, where n = 0-2, bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, and BL is 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline, are described. The (Ru(bpy)/sub 2/(BL))(PF/sub 6/)/sub 2/ complex crystallized in the monoclinic space group P2/sub 1//a and the cell parameters are repeated. All non-H atoms were refined anisotropically to an R value of 0.0672 for 5766 reflections with I > sigma(I). The ruthenium to nitrogen bond distances were Ru-N(pyridine) = 2.06 A (average) and Ru-N(pyrazine) = 2.096 (4) A. Absorption spectra contained bands (250-300 nm) in the ultraviolet region that were assignable to ligand ..pi.. ..-->.. ..pi..* transitions and visible bands (517-300 nm) that were assignable to d..pi.. ..-->.. ..pi..* MLCT transitions. Reduction potentials for the Ru/sup 3+/2+/ couples varied from about 1.40 to 1.70 V vs SSCE. Three reductions were observed and assigned to the one-electron reduction of each bidentate ligand. Weak luminescence was observed, and corrected emission energy maxima were located at 766 +/- 4 nm. Excited-state reduction potentials were estimated from the difference between emission energy maxima and ground-state reduction potentials. Excited-state lifetimes at room temperature in 4:1 EtOH-MeOH ranged from 167 to < 70 ns. Temperature-dependent-lifetime (90-298 K) data gave evidencemore » for ..delta..E' values of 1100 +/- 300 cm/sup -1/. The temperature dependence was attributed to either the third MLCT state according to the localized-orbital model or the presence of a fourth CT state for (Ru(BL)/sub 2/(bpy))/sup 2 +/, since little photochemistry was found for it, and to the third and/or the fourth CT state and the dd state for both (Ru(BL)/sub 2/(bpy))/sup 2 +/ and (Ru(BL)/sub 3/)/sup 2 +/. 54 references, 7 figures, 6 tables.« less

TL;DR: Cellobiose-polymyxin B-colistin agar demonstrated a significant advantage over other media designed for the isolation or differentiation of vibrios: of both the 136 strains representing 19 Vibrio species and the marine isolates of the genera Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, and Photobacteria, only V. cholerae and V. vulnificus were able to grow.
Abstract: Thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar has been routinely used for the isolation of pathogenic vibrios, although its selectivity for Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus is inadequate. Therefore, a new plating medium, cellobiose-polymyxin B-colistin agar, was developed for the isolation of these two species. Cellobiose-polymyxin B-colistin agar demonstrated a significant advantage over other media designed for the isolation or differentiation of vibrios: of both the 136 strains representing 19 Vibrio species and the marine isolates of the genera Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium, and Photobacterium, only V. vulnificus and V. cholerae were able to grow. Furthermore, the fermentation of cellobiose by V. vulnificus allowed for the easy differentiation of these two species. This medium offers significant potential as a selective and differential medium for these two pathogenic vibrios.

TL;DR: In this paper, isotopic compositions of tholeiitic basalts collected over an area of less than 100 km2 near the Oceanographer transform fault have been interpreted as mixing between three chemically distinct mantle sources.
Abstract: Tholeiitic basalts collected over an area of less than 100 km2 near the Oceanographer transform fault have isotopic compositions interpreted as mixing between three chemically distinct mantle sources. Of the two enriched sources, one has an isotopic composition not previously observed in basalts from the North Atlantic. Its characteristics suggest a model whereby portions of the mantle currently beneath 35° N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge contain detached fragments of old sub-continental mantle.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of exposure to and interaction with gay persons on heterosexual self-reported attitudes of comfort with homosexuality has been investigated in a study at a southeastern metropolitan university during 1983.
Abstract: This investigation focused on the influence of exposure to and interaction with gay persons on heterosexual self-reported attitudes of comfort with homosexuality. A group-administered questionnaire, including a 25-item scale by Hudson and Ricketts to measure the perceived degree of dread or discomfort of contact with homosexuals, was used in human sexuality classes at a southeastern metropolitan university during 1983. Findings taking into account the total scale scores, as well as the 25 individual item scores. suggested that exposure to and interaction with homosexuals results in a self-reported attitude of reduction in discomfort with homosexuals.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the study of corporate transgression by transnational corporations can legitimately embrace not only violations of law, but also violations of international codes and other injurious actions that are analogous in severity and source to violations of these codes.
Abstract: During the last two decades transnational corporations (TNCs) have significantly expanded their operations in the Third World. However, in many developing nations legal controls over injurious corporate activities have not grown commensurately. As a result, TNCs operating in developing host nations have engaged legally in a variety of injurious actions that would have been violations of criminal, regulatory, or civil law in their home countries. The differences in the laws of home and host nations, and the ability of TNCs to influence the legal climate in host countries, renders the laws derived at the level of nation-states an unsatisfactory basis for determining the scope of criminological research on TNCs. Attempts within the United Nations to redefine the meaning of corporate crime by creating codes of conduct for international business, and efforts by U.S. business interests to limit these codes, are examined as a specific case in the current debate over what constitutes corporate transgressions. Utilizing the concept of critical reflexivity, we argue that the study of corporate transgression by TNCs can legitimately embrace not only violations of law, but also violations of international codes and other injurious actions that are analogous in severity and source to violations of these codes.

TL;DR: The proposed model can facilitate knowledge representation and approximate reasoning for object/concept relation modeling especially in an environment containing imprecision, ambiguity, and/or uncertainty, which is often the case faced by knowledge engineers in building decision support systems.
Abstract: :POOL—A Semantic Model for Approximate Reasoning—is based on the theory of linguistic fuzzy relations (lfr) and linguistic similarity relations (lsr). The proposed model combines the advantages of linguistic representation and numerical computation. Hence, it can facilitate knowledge representation and approximate reasoning for object/concept relation modeling especially in an environment containing imprecision, ambiguity, and/or uncertainty, which is often the case faced by knowledge engineers in building decision support systems.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the ability to make use of available host iron is an important determinant for pathogenicity of V. vulnificus.
Abstract: 16 Vibrio vulnificus strains isolated from clinical and environmental sources were studied. 6 strains (4 clinical and 2 environmental) were virulent in both an infant mouse intragastric inoculation model and an iron-loaded adult mouse model; there was a close correlation between results in the two models. Virulence was not associated with increased in vitro production of extracellular cytotoxin-hemolysin or protease. There was some correlation between virulence and the ability of a strain to grow in an iron-limited medium, with a significant association observed between virulence and utilization of transferrin as an iron source. Our results suggest that the ability to make use of available host iron is an important determinant for pathogenicity of V. vulnificus.

Abstract: The research presented in this paper was directed at understanding the dynamic interaction between demand, service rate, and policy alternatives in a typical urban taxi system. The general nature of such systems is discussed and a SLAM II simulation model of the system introduced. A series of experiments with the model indicate that customer waiting time is relatively insensitive to changes in demand but highly sensitive to changes in the number of taxi cabs.

TL;DR: For example, the authors found that those who described the supervisors who they wished to have working for them valued masculine traits significantly more than those who describe the supervisor they would like to work for.
Abstract: Previous research has indicated that stereotypically masculine behaviors characterize leadership and that stereotypically feminine traits are devalued. However, this research may be questioned on the basis that the sex stereotype measures employed were not appropriate for the managerial role and that the rating task was not clearly defined. The present study attempts to deal with these concerns by asking groups to rate two different managers: the one they would wish to work for or the one they would wish to have working for them. As hypothesized, those who described the supervisors who they wished to have working for them valued masculine traits significantly more than those who described the supervisor they would like to work for. In all cases, however, stereotypically sexneutral traits were most highly valued.

TL;DR: The ability of virulent and avirulent strains ofVibrio vulnificus to overcome iron limitations by using iron bound to iron-binding proteins was examined and growth was enhanced by the iron-saturated form of these proteins.
Abstract: The ability of virulent and avirulent strains ofVibrio vulnificus to overcome iron limitations by using iron bound to iron-binding proteins was examined. While no strains were able to obtain iron from lactoferrin or ferritin when these proteins were not fully saturated with iron, growth was enhanced by the iron-saturated form of these proteins. None of the strains was able to scavange iron from 30% saturated transferrin, but there were strain differences in the ability to obtain iron from the saturated form. The virulent strains were able to compete more efficiently with transferrin when it was fully saturated with iron than were the avirulent strains.

TL;DR: The embryonic origin of the nervous system in Phialidium gregarium was investigated and entoderm-free planulae were found to be devoid of interstitial cells and their derivatives, the nematocytes and ganglion cells.
Abstract: Summary The embryonic origin of the nervous system in Phialidium gregarium was investigated. Entoderm-free planulae, surgically produced by bisection at mid-gastrulation, and normal planulae were examined by light and electron microscopy to determine their cellular composition. The cell types that occur in the epidermis of the normal planula were described. The entoderm-free planulae were found to be devoid of interstitial cells and their derivatives, the nematocytes and ganglion cells. Neurosensory cells were present, however, indicating that they are derivatives of the ectodermal epithelium. The role of nerve elements in the initiation of metamorphosis was also examined. Normal and entoderm-free planulae treated for four hours with 0.4% colchicine at two, three, or four days of development fail to undergo cesium-induced metamorphosis. Since such treatment in other hydrozoans eliminates interstitial cells and their derivatives [1-3], it might be argued that ganglion cells are necessary to initiate metamo...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors interviewed 160 residents in eight scattered-site public housing projects in Charlotte, North Carolina and found that the neighborhood characteristics creating the greatest dissatisfaction and the greatest differences between the individual scattered site projects were access to public transportation, shopping and jobs.
Abstract: In the 1950s and 1960s public housing was built in big central projects. Since 1976 it has been dispersed. The change to smaller projects scattered throughout a city has raised questions about the satisfaction of the residents who have been separated from former neighborhoods of friends, relatives, and often jobs. This study interviewed 160 residents in eight scattered-site public housing projects in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite relocation, the occupants clearly were satisfied. Their satisfaction was related to an improvement over previous residence, the quality of the dwelling unit, feeling at home in the neighborhood, shortness of time in residence, and overall satisfaction with life. Characteristics of the neighborhood in which residents expressed a high level of satisfaction were the size of the project, access to schools, and presence of “good” people. The neighborhood characteristics creating the greatest dissatisfaction and the greatest differences between the individual scattered-site projects were access to public transportation, shopping and jobs.

TL;DR: In this paper, a framework for investigating management involvement in decision support systems (dss) is proposed and a report is provided of findings of how, when, and why management involvement is required.
Abstract: :Managerial involvement in information systems has often been suggested. Decision support systems (dss) may well represent the information system category most demanding of management’s time. In this paper the author proposes a framework for investigating management involvement in dss. Next, a report is provided of findings of how, when, and why management involvement in dss is required. These findings are based upon an examination of eighteen dss cases and of the existing literature. Last, the framework is compared with the “conventional wisdom’’ in the existing literature.

TL;DR: Planula larvae of the marine hydroids Halocordyle disticha and Hydractinia echinata were treated with the catecholamines epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, as well as with certain of their precursors and agonists, and none of the compounds was effective in inducing metamorphosis.
Abstract: Planula larvae of the marine hydroids Halocordyle disticha and Hydractinia echinata were treated with the catecholamines epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, as well as with certain of their precursors and agonists. Norepinephrine, l-dopa, dopamine and the dopamine agonist ADTN at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 0.001 mM induced metamorphosis within 24 h in Halocordyle disticha, with no observable morphogenetic abnormalities. Epinephrine, the adrenergic agonists phenylephrine, isoproterenol and methoxyamine, and the catecholamine precursors phenylalanine and tyrosine were found not to induce metamorphosis at the concentrations employed. None of the compounds was effective in inducing metamorphosis in Hydractinia echinata. A model is presented for neural control of metamorphosis in Halocordyle disticha

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify a number of dimensions which highlight the diversity of the so-called senior citizen market, including age, health, income, education, retirement, information processing, selfconcept, reference groups, and cohort membership.
Abstract: For decades, organizations have based their marketing efforts to the 65 and older market on traditional stereotypes. This is surprising given the size, growth, and spending power of this market. It is also inconsistent with the marketing concept. This article identifies a number of dimensions which highlight the diversity of the so‐called senior citizen market. The diversity of this market involves a complex set of factors involving age, health, income, education, retirement, information processing, the self‐concept, reference groups, and cohort membership. The marketing implications of these dimensions are illustrated through examples of current marketing practice.

TL;DR: Pavlov's theory of higher nervous activity encompassed overt behavior, neural processes, and the conscious experience, and it was proposed that although all learning involves the formation of associations, the organism's adaptation to the environment is established through conditioning, but the accumulation of knowledge is established by trial and error.
Abstract: American psychologists are informed on Pavlov's work on conditional reflexes but not on the full development of his theory of higher nervous activity This article shows that Pavlov's theory of higher nervous activity dealt with concepts that concerned contemporary psychologists Pavlov used the conditioning of the salivary reflex for methodological purposes Pavlov's theory of higher nervous activity encompassed overt behavior, neural processes, and the conscious experience The strong Darwinian element of Pavlov's theory, with its stress on the higher organisms' adaptation, is described With regard to learning, Pavlov, at the end of his scholarly career, proposed that although all learning involves the formation of associations, the organism's adaptation to the environment is established through conditioning, but the accumulation of knowledge is established by trial and error

TL;DR: In this article, three groups of college students (25 naturally menstruating women, 26 women using oral contraceptives, and 27 men) kept a daily record of each occurrence of headache for eight weeks.
Abstract: SYNOPSIS Headache is one of many symptoms associated with menstrual phase. Three groups of college students (25 naturally menstruating women, 26 women using oral contraceptives, and 27 men) kept a daily record of each occurrence of headache for eight weeks. The rating scale data was analyzed to test for effects of group and menstrual phase. Naturally menstruating women reported more headaches than women using oral contraceptives, and in addition, women in both groups experienced variability across menstrual phase in reported headaches. Headache pain was found to rise premenstrually reaching a peak during the menstrual phase.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that older persons engage in active cognitive elaboration of pictorial stimuli when those stimuli are presented in such a way as to encourage elaboration.
Abstract: This experiment investigated the effects of perceptual elaboration on the memory performance of 15 older (M = 70.4 years) and 15 younger adults (M = 25.2 years). Participants were presented tachistoscopically with line drawings that varied in contour completeness. As predicted, both old and young persons' identification response times for those drawings increased with decreases in contour completeness, indicating increased elaborative processing (Kunen et al., 1979). Moreover, a moderate decrease in contour completeness was associated with increased recall of the drawings for both age groups, although older persons identified the drawings more slowly and recalled fewer drawings than did younger persons. These findings complement those of Park et al. (1986) and demonstrate that older persons engage in active cognitive elaboration of pictorial stimuli when those stimuli are presented in such a way as to encourage elaboration.

TL;DR: It is argued that, in addition to biomechanics and heritage, diet may affect allometric relationships and that an inherent plasticity or malleability of the growth process may be characteristic of nonhuman as well as human primates.
Abstract: Although secular trends toward increasing body size are apparent in many human populations, little is known about their occurrence in nonhuman primates. The Cayo Santiago skeletal collection of Macaca mulatta includes 101 adult animals (greater than or equal to 10 years of age) born at different times in the past 3 1/2 decades, so that variation in size may be examined relative to birth year. No secular trends in orbital height were observed in this sample, but in both sexes lengths of adult long bones increased significantly over time, while cranial dimensions and length of the second molar in female also showed significant variation with birth year. These changes were consistent with the history of provisioning of the animals and with fluctuations in population size. Low-order correlations were observed between birth year and body proportions, especially the crural index in males, a pattern that has also been observed in human populations. These findings argue that, in addition to biomechanics and heritage, diet may affect allometric relationships and that an inherent plasticity or malleability of the growth process may be characteristic of nonhuman as well as human primates.
