Forced attention to specific applicant qualifications: Impact on physical attractiveness and sex of applicant biases.

Abstract: The effect of forced postponement of a hiring decision until after specific qualifications had been evaluated was examined as a procedure to reduce sex and physical attractiveness discrimination. Ninety six male and 148 female undergraduates evaluated the qualifications of an attractive, average, or unattractive male or female applicant. Ratings of specific qualifications preceded or followed an overall and hiring decision rating. Results indicated that the order variable influenced ratings of specific qualifications but not the overall or hiring decision. Sex of subject and attractiveness did affect the hiring decision with male and attractive applicants being preferred.

Racial and Gender Differences in Weight Status and Dietary Practices among College Students

Abstract: A questionnaire was used to assess nutritional intake, weight status, and dietary practices among 630 US college students Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using self-reported heights and weights, and nutritional status was assessed via 24-hour recall Sixty-four percent of the students had acceptable BMI levels (between 19 and 25); 16% of African-American females and 15% of African-American males had BMIs indicating obesity (30 or above) Approximately 18% of the students consumed 5 servings per day of fruits and vegetables, 7% consumed 6 or more grain products, and 53% consumed 2 or more dairy products Twenty-seven percent reported never/rarely eating fast foods Recommendations are presented for the development of culturally appropriate health education/promotion programs in order to help college students meet Healthy People 2010 objectives

24/7 Hourly Response to Electricity Real-Time Pricing with up to Eight Summers of Experience

Abstract: This paper provides hourly own and cross price elasticities for industrial customers with up to 8 years of experience on Duke Power optional real-time rates. We include the effects of customer characteristics and temperature conditions. Aggregated results show larger own elasticities than have previous studies, complementarity within the potential peak hours and substitution in the late evening. As customers gain experience with hourly pricing, they show larger load reductions during higher priced hours. As compared to a TOU rate, net benefits are $14,000 per customer per month, approximately 4% of the average customer’s bill, and much greater than metering costs.
