Abstract: Trajectories of emotion regulation processes were examined in a community sample of 269 children across the ages of 4 to 7 using hierarchical linear modeling. Maternal depressive symptomatology (Symptom Checklist-90) and children's physiological reactivity (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]) and vagal regulation (Delta RSA) were explored as predictors of individual differences in trajectories of emotion regulation and negativity (mother-reported Emotion Regulation Checklist; A. M. Shields & D. Cicchetti, 1997). In addition, the authors explored whether children's physiological regulation would moderate the effect of maternal depressive symptomatology on children's emotion regulation trajectories. Results indicated that over time, emotion regulation increased whereas negativity decreased, though considerable individual variability in the pattern of change was observed. Greater maternal depressive symptomatology was associated with less steep emotion regulation trajectories. There was a significant Maternal Depressive Symptomatology x Baseline RSA x Age interaction predicting emotion regulation trajectories. Overall, it appears that the development of emotion regulation over time is compromised when mothers report greater depressive symptomatology. There is also evidence that children's capacity for physiological regulation can buffer some of the adverse consequences associated with maternal depressive symptomatology.

Abstract: Phytochemicals are potential cancer chemopreventive agents, based partly on cellular research establishing that phytochemicals inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. To elucidate the mechanism of phytochemicals, a basic understanding is needed of what stimulates cancer cell proliferation. Cancer cells, particularly those that are highly invasive or metastatic, may require a certain level of oxidative stress to maintain a balance between undergoing either proliferation or apoptosis. They constitutively generate large but tolerable amounts of H2O2 that apparently function as signaling molecules in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway to constantly activate redox-sensitive transcription factors and responsive genes that are involved in the survival of cancer cells as well as their proliferation. With such a reliance of cancer cells on H2O2, it follows that if the excess H2O2 can be scavenged by phenolic phytochemicals having antioxidant activity, the oxidative stress-responsive genes can be suppressed and consequently cancer cell proliferation inhibited. On the other hand, phenolic phytochemicals and another group of phytochemicals known as isothiocyanates can induce the formation of H2O2 to achieve an intolerable level of high oxidative stress in cancer cells. As an early response, the stress genes are activated. However, when the critical threshold for cancer cells to cope with the induced oxidative stress has been reached, key cellular components such as DNA are damaged irreparably. In conjunction, genes involved in initiating cell cycle arrest and/or apoptosis are activated. Therefore, phytochemicals can either scavenge the constitutive H2O2 or paradoxically generate additional amounts of H2O2 to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.

Abstract: The authors investigate the effects of loyalty programs on loyalty to packaged goods brands. Findings from a series of experiments indicate that the incentive that is offered in a loyalty program is important to whether the program succeeds or fails at building brand loyalty. The data reported suggest that incentives that have overlap with brand associations, which the authors term cue-compatible incentives, can prompt rehearsal that increases the accessibility of favorable brand associations. This, in turn, helps boost postprogram loyalty. At the same time, incentives that are tangible or concrete can undermine postprogram loyalty. This seems to occur because elaboration is attracted to the incentive at the expense of the brand. Incentive associations may thus gain in accessibility and interfere with access to brand associations.

Abstract: Research Findings: Using observational data gathered in 730 kindergarten classrooms in 6 states, the present study focuses on the quality of children's learning opportunities in kindergarten classrooms. Findings show that overall, children experience moderate to low levels of quality in the areas of classroom organization and instructional support in kindergarten. Results are also presented in comparison to children's experiences in the pre-kindergarten year. These comparisons indicate that kindergarten children spend a greater proportion of the school day in language arts, math, and whole-group instruction and less time in centers than they do in pre-kindergarten. An examination of predictors of kindergarten classroom quality indicated that program characteristics (i.e., adult–child ratio, length of school day) and teacher psychological variables (i.e., beliefs and depressive symptoms) were stronger predictors of classroom quality than were teacher experience and educational background. Abstract: Research on teachers’ (personal) theories and beliefs and their (practical) knowledge derived from experience, whether held implicitly or stated explicitly as their personal practical theories (PPTs), indicates that such beliefs can influence teachers’ classroom practices and, therefore, the opportunities that their students have for learning. This study uses a content analysis of 472 self-reported PPTs collected from 94 prospective teachers to develop a model of categories of beliefs, and describes the relationship between the content and sources of teacher candidates’ beliefs, expressed as PPTs. The purpose of this study is to help teacher educators better understand beliefs that teacher candidates bring to their teacher education program as we try to influence their knowledge and practices.
