TL;DR: Undercompensation, observed in the group acclimated at 5°C, suggests there is a metabolic “shut-down” associated with the winter torpor observed in D. ochrophaeus, which would enable the salamander to remain active during early spring and fall when temperatures temporarily fall below 10°C.

TL;DR: In this paper, a semantic differential was developed to measure attitude toward mathematics, which was compared with a Likert type attitude instrument constructed by Aiken and Dreger (1, 2).
Abstract: A semantic differential was developed to measure attitude toward mathematics. This instrument was contrasted with a Likert type attitude instrument constructed by Aiken and Dreger (1, 2). There were 68 male and female subjects, all of whom were non-mathematics majors enrolled in a required doctoral level statistics class in the College of Education of a large state university in the southwest. The correlation between the two instruments was r = .90. It was concluded that the semantic differential constructed for this study was as effective a measure of attitude toward mathematics as the Likert type instrument. Analysis of the data also indicated that people possessing favorable and unfavorable attitudes toward mathematics differed to the greatest extent on the evaluative scales of the semantic differential, thus lending construct validity to the semantic differential.

TL;DR: Marbut places this other industry in perspective in his historical survey of reporting from the nation s capital as mentioned in this paper. But his analysis of the stresses and strains in reporting which have taken place in the last quarter-century, giving rise to such incidents as the U-2 and the Bay of Pigs news imbroglios is not discussed.
Abstract: On January 17, 1969, Eric Sevareid referred to news as the other industry in Washington. On other broadcasts he has said that politics and news were the capital s two businesses. His remarks reflect the fact that news and its related fields of public relations and lobbying have grown to mammoth proportions.Mr. Marbut places this other industry in perspective in his historical survey of reporting from the nation s capital. Of particular interest in this timely book is his analysis of the stresses and strains in reporting which have taken place in the last quarter-century, giving rise to such incidents as the U-2 and the Bay of Pigs news imbroglios."

TL;DR: The germination of "normal" cysts is often preceded by enlargement to the giant form and division of the central body to produce cysts with multiple central bodies, which have been reported only when yeast extract was added to the encystment medium.
Abstract: Cyst germination in Azotobacter vinelandii ATCC 12837 was studied by using phase contrast and electron microscopy. Germination in this organism was accompanied by the formation of large cyst forms of two different types: giant cysts and cysts containing multiple central bodies. Previously, these two types have been reported only when yeast extract was added to the encystment medium. In this study, we observed giant cysts and cysts with multiple central bodies in nitrogen-free liquid medium. The germination of “normal” cysts is often preceded by enlargement to the giant form and division of the central body to produce cysts with multiple central bodies. Structures similar in appearance to ribosomal aggregates were observed only in cysts undergoing pregermination transformations.

TL;DR: The relative importance of aquatic and terrestrial beetles as passive overland dispersal vehicles for viable algae and protozoans is elucidated.
Abstract: The relative importance of aquatic and terrestrial beetles as passive overland dispersal vehicles for viable algae and protozoans is elucidated. Twenty-three species of aquatic beetles, representing the families Haliplidae, Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, and Hydrophylidae, collected aseptically during overland flights, carried 101 different genera of algae, 20 protozoans, 1 rotifer, and unidentified fungal spores and/or mycelia. Of the 204 inoculae (“washings”) made with these beetles, 193 developed populations of algae and/or protozoans. Six of the remainder contained only fungi; only 5 were negative. Sixteen species of terrestrial beetles, representing the families Cicindelidae, Carabidae, Cebrionidae, Meloidae, Scarabaeidae, Trogidae, Cerambycidae, and Curculionidae carried 50 different genera of algae, 15 protozoans, and unidentified rotifers, nematodes, and fungi. Seventy-six of the 93 inoculae developed populations represented by combinations of these organisms. Fifteen inoculae contained only fungi; 2 were negative. The average number of genera of algae and protozoans per individual for all 23 aquatic beetle species was 5.8. The 16 species of terrestrial beetles carried an average of 3.0 genera of algae and protozoa.

TL;DR: In this article, the cycloaddition of dichloroketene with several simple ketones to produce 2-oxetanones is described, and the ketene is generated in situ by the zine dehalogenation method and the zinc/zinc chloride activates the carbonyl group of the ketone.

TL;DR: The presence, of crosswalls which develop by progressive ingrowth from peripheral walls was demonstrated in S. major and cellular septation is not consistent with the generally accepted characters of the genus Spirulina, a taxonomic shift may be indicated.
Abstract: SUMMARY Spirulina major Kutz. was observed with the electron microscope and compared at the ultrastructural level with a species of Arthrospira. The presence, of crosswalls which develop by progressive ingrowth from peripheral walls was demonstrated in S. major. Since cellular septation is not consistent with the generally accepted characters of the genus Spirulina, a taxonomic shift may be indicated.

TL;DR: In this article, a modified form of the Delphi Technique was used within the School of Education at the University of Northern Colorado to formulate a definition of effective college teaching, which contained five major categories.
Abstract: A modified form of the Delphi Technique was used within the School of Education at the University of Northern Colorado to formulate a definition of effective college teaching. The resulting definition contained five major categories. These results were used to develop twenty-five profiles of fictitious faculty members. Participants were asked to separate these twenty-five profiles into five sets according to those most deserving of a promotion. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze these judgments to determine the priority placed on each of the major categories of the definition of effective teaching.

TL;DR: A spirit of self-confidence and optimism animated Wellington, for he thought Metternich agreed completely with the cardinal points of Britain's policy toward Spain: the observance of strict neutrality and the maintenance of diplomatic relations as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: At the opening of the Congress, a spirit of self-confidence and optimism animated Wellington, for he thought Metternich agreed completely with the cardinal points of Britain’s policy toward Spain: the observance of strict neutrality and the maintenance of diplomatic relations. The duke’s health improved and likewise his humor, as a host of adoring young ladies immediately surrounded him. To his Grace, “the political sky seemed bright and the war clouds rolled away.”2 He assured Canning that “all notion of what is called a European army, or any offensive operation against Spain, is at an end.”3 His optimism soon was shattered, however, as much by the clash of personalities as by conflict of policy. Metternich, he learned, had deliberately deceived him in order to retain his support in restraining the tsar.
