TL;DR: In this paper, the Coulomb-gauge interaction was used to obtain the transition probability per unit time for nonresonant two-photon absorption from the $1s$ to the $2s$ state of atomic hydrogen.
Abstract: The transition probability per unit time for nonresonant two-photon absorption from the $1s$ to the $2s$ state of atomic hydrogen is obtained analytically using both the electric-dipole interaction $\ensuremath{-}e\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{E}}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}$ and the Coulomb-gauge interaction $\ensuremath{-}(\frac{e}{m})\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{A}}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{p}}$. The two rates are different, except in the case of resonance. In situations like this, gauge invariance can be used to show that results calculated from the $\ensuremath{-}e\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{E}}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}$ interaction are always correct.

TL;DR: The authors found that communication apprehension was significantly negatively related to both middle-school students' attitudes toward school and final grades, and that apprehension was found to influence the choice of desired others made by students and their teacher in a classroom communication network.
Abstract: Communication apprehension was found to be significantly negatively related to both middle-school students’ attitudes toward school and final grades. In addition, communication apprehension was found to influence the choice of desired others made by students and their teacher in a classroom communication network. In general, communication apprehensive students were found not to be considered desirable communication choices by their peers.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed the lyrics of 151 songs representing country, soul, and easy listening genres for conformity or nonconformity to specific stereotypical sex role traits and found that males conform to stereotypical male traits in all three genres more often than women conform to traditional female traits.
Abstract: The lyrics of 151 songs representing Country, Soul, and Easy Listening genres are content analyzed for conformity or nonconformity to specific stereotypical sex role traits. Males conform to stereotypical male traits in all three genres more often than women conform to stereotypical female traits. The variability in female traits may be due to varying interpretations of the female role by male lyricists or to actual variation in role expectations among American subcultures.

TL;DR: Foods such as wheat, corn, tomatoes, sugar, mushrooms, and dairy products were instrumental in producing behavioral disorders with this child.
Abstract: The effect of particular foods on levels of hyperactivity, uncontrolled laughter, and disruptive behaviors was studied in an 8-year-old autistic boy. The floor of the child's room was taped off into six equal-sized rectangles to measure general activity level. Frequency data were recorded on screaming, biting, scratching, and object throwing. A time-sample technique was used to record data on laughing. Data were gathered during four phases. During an initial 4-day period the child was fed a normal American diet. A 6-day fasting period followed, during which time only spring water was allowed. The third phase lasted 18 days and involved the presentation of individual foods. During the final phase of the study the child was given only foods that had not provoked a reaction in the third phase. Results showed that foods such as wheat, corn, tomatoes, sugar, mushrooms, and dairy products were instrumental in producing behavioral disorders with this child.

TL;DR: Similar capacity for AHH induction is present in fresh lung tissue, fresh PAMs, and cultured mitogen‐stimulated lymphocytes from cigarette smokers without evidence of lung cancer, but AHH values are not positively correlated with similar tissues from individual lung cancer patients.
Abstract: Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) activity was measured fluorometrically in surgically-excised fresh lung tissue, pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs), and peripheral blood lymphocytes from 14 cigarette smokers (7 with and 7 without primary lung cancer). Levels of AHH in fresh PAMs and AHH inducibility (expressed as fold-induction) in cultured, mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes from individual noncancer patients correlated well (r =0.975, p 0.25). These results indicate similar capacity for AHH induction is present in fresh lung tissue, fresh PAMs, and cultured mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes from cigarette smokers without evidence of lung cancer, but AHH values are not positively correlated with similar tissues from individual lung cancer patients.

TL;DR: The far-uv CD spectra of eight lectins are presented in this paper, where they are grouped into three classes according to their particular CD spectras: α-helix, β-pleated sheet, and aperiodic.
Abstract: The far-uv CD spectra of eight lectins are presented. These eight lectins, as well as others previously studied, are grouped into three classes according to their particular CD spectra. The eight lectins studied appeared to have secondary structure dominated by β-pleated sheet, which so far has been true of all lectins. An attempt was made to quantitate the three structural components (α-helix, β-pleated sheet, and aperiodic) in the lectins using the data for reference proteins given by Chen et al. [Biochemistry13,3350 (1974)]. For lectins in two of the classes, this method proved excellent and values for the three components are given. However, for the third class of lectins, which includes most of the lectins as well as Concanavalin A, this method of analysis proved to be unsatisfactory. This inadequacy was due to two factors: (1) the reference proteins used by Chen and (2) the unusual CD spectra of these lectins manifested by considerable ellipticity above 225 nm in a region where there are no known peptide electronic transitions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a theoretical understanding of the nonlinear, nonequilibrium optical properties of the germanium solid-state plasma and discuss the theoretical limitations of these experiments.
Abstract: Over the past half-decade measurements of the nonlinear, nonequilibrium optical properties of the germanium solid-state plasma have been carried out in several laboratories. These measurements involve, for example, the ultrafast relaxation of optically-excited electron-hole distributions in semiconductors and the photoluminescence spectrum of Ge at high excitation intensities. Here, we review our present theoretical understanding of these experiments, and we discuss the theoretical limitations. We also extend our previous model, through a simple calculation, to include carrier diffusion.

TL;DR: An algorithm based upon intersecting circles which eliminates certain types of systematic error is presented with simulation data utilized to compare the position location estimates obtained from both triangulation and circulation algorithms.
Abstract: Position location algorithms, using data from electronic surveillance systems have, for the most part, been based upon statistical analysis of the points of intersection of the lines of bearing. These triangulation ion algorithms may well minimize the effect of random measurement errors on the location estimate, but few existing algorithms account for systematic (bias) errors. An algorithm based upon intersecting circles which eliminates certain types of systematic error is presented with simulation data utilized to compare the position location estimates obtained from both triangulation and circulation algorithms.

TL;DR: Comparisons of enzyme characteristics in several tissues may be useful in lung cancer diagnosis and in assessment of lung cancer risk, but the use of a single tissue such as lymphocytes for evaluation of the relationship between aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activity and cancer susceptibility is questionable.
Abstract: The in vitro induction of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase was measured in pulmonary alveolar macrophages and peripheral blood lymphocytes from 14 cigarette smokers with primary lung cancer and 15 smokers with a variety of nonneoplastic pulmonary diseases. Enzyme levels were measured in cells cultured with or without the inducer benzanthracene. For both induced and noninduced cultures, there were no differences in mean levels of cultured macrophage or lymphocyte enzyme activity between noncancer and lung cancer patients. Absolute levels and fold induction of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase in cultured macrophages and lymphocytes from individual noncancer patients were positively correlated [noninduced ( r = 0.640, p 0.3), induced ( r = 0.306, p > 0.3), and fold induction ( r = -0.625, p < 0.02)]. Comparison of enzyme activity in macrophages freshly lavaged from the lung and benzanthracene-induced activity in cultured macrophages revealed a positive correlation for both noncancer ( r = 0.865, p < 0.005) and lung cancer ( r = 0.971; p < 0.001) patients. Similarly, comparison of enzyme activity in fresh macrophages and fold induction values in cultured macrophages was also well correlated for both groups of patients ( r = 0.876, p < 0.001 for non-cancer patients; r = 0.908, p < 0.001 for lung cancer patients). Multivariant analysis of enzyme characteristics in several tissues may be useful in lung cancer diagnosis and in assessment of lung cancer risk. However, the use of a single tissue such as lymphocytes for evaluation of the relationship between aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activity and cancer susceptibility is questionable.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of pulsed electric fields on the magnetophonon structure in the transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance of n-InSb at 77 K has been reexamined using a magnetic field modulation technique.
Abstract: The influence of pulsed electric fields on the magnetophonon structure in the transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance of n-InSb at 77 K has been reexamined using a magnetic field modulation technique. For the transverse configuration, a shift to higher magnetic fields with increasing electric field is observed for the resistance maxima up to N = 8. The amplitudes decrease monotonously and disappear at about 60V/cm for N = 3. In the longitudinal case, the extrema shift to lower magnetic fields as the electric field is increased. In contrast to the transverse case, the amplitudes increase by a factor of 1.8 up to 15V/cm, and then either decrease or become saturated, depending on the harmonic number of the extremum under consideration. These experimental results are discussed within the context of calculations based on a quantum kinetic equation approach and predictions obtained from a simplified analytical theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dependence of the optical properties of the Ge plasma on the electron-phonon coupling constant, the broadening in the plasmon-assisted recombination, and the energy band structure is discussed.
Abstract: Recently, Elci et al. developed a first principles model that accounts for the generation and transient behavior of dense electron-hole plasmas produced in germanium by picosecond optical pulses. The agreement between this model and early experiments is substantial. However, recent transmission measurements, involving optical pulses of varying width, are in disagreement with initial predictions of this model. Here, we emphasize the dependence of the optical properties of the Ge plasma on the electron-phonon coupling constant, the broadening in the plasmon-assisted recombination, and the energy band structure, and we suggest adjustments to the original model that should produce agreement with these more recent experiments. The pulsewidth dependence in the transmission is shown to be sensitive to the relative strengths of the electron-phonon relaxation and the plasmon recombination during the temporal evolution of the hot electron-hole plasma.

TL;DR: It is concluded that microtubules are not required for the response of adrenal cells to ACTH, and Halothane, which inhibits both micro Tubules and microfilaments, also decreases the response toACTH.
Abstract: 1. 1. Inhibitors of microtubules were added to Y-1 mouse adrenal tumor cells in monolayer culture to determine whether these organelles are required for the increased steroidogenesis caused by ACTH. 2. 2. Colchicine (10 −3 −10 −7 M) was without influence on this response to ACTH, although it completely disrupted tubules. 3. 3. Other inhibitors of microtubules (D 2 O, podophyllotoxin, griseofulvin and vinblastine) failed to inhibit this response except under conditions in which non-specific effects were probable. 4. 4. Halothane, which inhibits both microtubules and microfilaments, also decreases the response to ACTH. 5. 5. It is concluded that microtubules (unlike microfilaments) are not required for the response of adrenal cells to ACTH.

TL;DR: The mass spectra of a series of 2p-substituted phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolanes have been examined and compared with the mass spectrum of 2-phenyl- 1, 3, 2, 2 dioxaborols as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The mass spectra of a series of 2-p-substituted phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolanes have been examined and compared with the mass spectrum of 2-phenyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolane. Formation of the substituted ion [C7H6X]+ by electron impact induced rearrangement has been found to be influenced significantly by the presence and nature of the substituent at the para position of the phenyl ring.

TL;DR: A component capable of binding benzo(a)pyrene was measured in plasma from cigarette smokers and nonsmokers and was positively correlated with the capacity of the individual subject's lymphocytes to be induced for AHH activity in culture.
Abstract: A component capable of binding benzo(a)pyrene was measured in plasma from cigarette smokers and nonsmokers. This plasma fraction was found to have a high specificity of binding to benzo(a)pyrene, bound benzanthracene competitively with benzo(a)pyrene, and was positively correlated (r = 0.861, p less than 0.001) with the capacity of the individual subject's lymphocytes to be induced for AHH activity in culture. An inverse correlation (r = -0.957, p less than 0.001) between the presence of the plasma component in lung cancer patients and the capacity of lung cancer patients' lymphocytes to be induced in culture is unexplained at this time. A benzo(a)pyrene-binding fraction was not found in induced or uninduced cultured lymphocytes from smokers or nonsmokers, or in homogenates of lung excisional tissue from smokers with or without primary lung cancer.

TL;DR: Electrophoretic patterns for supernatant malate dehydrogenase in a common forage fish, Notropis lutrensis, were observed for several populations and thermal studies of enzyme activity revealed that cathodal isozymes of the three allozymic forms have different temperature-related optima.
Abstract: 1. 1. Electrophoretic patterns for supernatant malate dehydrogenase in a common forage fish, Notropis lutrensis , were observed for several populations. 2. 2. The patterns observed result from duplication of the supernatant MDH locus resulting in three isozymes. Genetic polymorphism results in three distinct allozymic patterns. Heterozygous combinations between any two allozymic forms results in six isozymes. 3. 3. Thermal studies of enzyme activity revealed that cathodal isozymes of the three allozymic forms have different temperature-related optima, i.e. 20, 25 and 30°C.
