TL;DR: Results of the DPQ's statistical properties suggest that it is an externally reliable instrument as well as internally consistent, and that chronic pain patients have significantly higher DPQ scores than normals.
Abstract: The Dallas Pain Questionnaire (DPQ) was developed to assess the amount of chronic spinal pain that affects four aspects (daily and work-leisure activities, anxiety-depression, and social interest) of the patients' lives. Results of the DPQ's statistical properties suggest that the DPQ is an externally reliable instrument as well as internally consistent. Two factors emerged from factor structure analysis. Factor 1 represents functional activities and Factor 2 represents emotional capacities. A correlation analysis suggests the concurrent validity of the psychological functional factors of the DPQ. A t test demonstrated that chronic pain patients have significantly higher DPQ scores than normals. Because these findings support its statistical properties, the DPQ appears to have utility for clinical and research purposes. The findings, limitations, and implications of this study are detailed, as are suggestions for future research.

TL;DR: In this paper, covariance structure analysis is used to investigate the effects of voting, campaign activity and the outcomes of the 1984 national elections on political efficacy in the American electorate, finding that political efficacy is positively associated with electoral participation.
Abstract: Elections constitute a principal avenue of citizen involvement in political life, and knowledge of their effects on public attitudes towards the polity and the role of the individual therein has important implications for theories of democratic governance. One sucli attitude is political efficacy, ‘the feeling that individual political action does have, or can have, an impact on the political process’. Although many studies have documented that political efficacy is positively associated with electoral participation, the causal mechanisms involved are not well understood. Most researchers have simply assumed that the ‘causal arrow’ runs from efficacy to participation, i.e. from the attitude to the behaviour. Investigations of the hypothesis that the behaviour (participation) affects the attitude (efficacy) are rare. Rarer still are enquiries focusing on the impact of election outcomes on efficacy, and studies that examine both effects are virtually non-existent. In this Note covariance structure analysis is used to investigate the effects of voting, campaign activity and the outcomes of the 1984 national elections on political efficacy in the American electorate.

TL;DR: This article examined how strategic communication is linked to specific relational features and found that perceptions of a communicator's competence mediate the effects of conflict strategies on the relational outcomes measured by trust, control mutuality, intimacy, and satisfaction.
Abstract: This study examines how strategic communication is linked to specific relational features. We hypothesize that perceptions of a communicator's competence mediate the effects of conflict strategies on the relational outcomes measured by trust, control mutuality, intimacy, and satisfaction. The components of competence were specific and general appropriateness, effectiveness, and global competence; these were included in LISREL analyses to investigate How the variables conflict, competence, and relational outcomes were linked. Participants reported on their partners’ conflict strategies, their own perceptions of the partner's competence, and relational variables. The results reveal that integrative strategies were positively linked to competence, whereas distributive and avoidant strategies were negatively linked to competence. The results support the view that competence perceptions mediate the link between conflict messages and relational outcomes.

TL;DR: It is concluded that each commercially available knee laxity testing device can provide reproducible quantitative measurements of knees laxity; however, due to differences in device sensitivities and functional design, numerical results from one device cannot be generalized to another device.
Abstract: Generally, three devices (the Genucom Knee Analysis System, the MEDmetric KT-1000 Arthrometer, and the Stryker Knee Laxity Tester), which have been pre sented in the literature, may be used to assess clinically the amount of knee laxity in an objective manner. This study compared the reproducibility of the anterior and posterior knee laxity values for each and made direct comparisons of the results obtained. Thirty asympto matic subjects were given a test-retest protocol on both legs with all three devices. Devices were tested in a counterbalanced order. Repeatability of test values within devices was variable, but all were acceptable, the lowest being r = 0.74. Analysis of variance (AN- OVA), and correlational analysis revealed that device- specific anterior and posterior laxity values were pro duced. We concluded that each commercially available knee laxity testing device can provide reproducible quantitative measurements of knee laxity; however, due to differences in device sensitivities and functional...

TL;DR: A good survey of many of the deposition methods appears in the 1988 November and December issues of the MRS BULLETIN as mentioned in this paper, however, one method not included in that survey, is metalorganic deposition (MOD), a powerful method for depositing a variety of materials.
Abstract: There are many methods of depositing thin film materials: thermal evaporation, sputtering, electron or laser beam evaporation, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). A good survey of many of the deposition methods appears in the 1988 November and December issues of the MRS BULLETIN. One method not included in that survey, however, is metalorganic deposition (MOD), a powerful method for depositing a variety of materials.Metalorganic deposition is not to be confused with metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), which is a gaseous deposition method. MOD is a nonvacuum, liquid-based, spin-on method of depositing thin films. A suitable organic precursor, dissolved in solution, is dispensed onto a substrate much like photoresist. The substrate is spun at a few thousand revolutions per minute, removing the excess fluid, driving off the solvent, and uniformly coating the substrate surface with an organic film a few microns thick. The soft metalorganic film is then pyrolyzed in air, oxygen, nitrogen, or other suitable atmosphere to convert the metalorganic precursors to their constituent elements, oxides, or other compounds. Figure 1 shows a schematic of the deposition process including a prebake and annealing (if necessary).

Abstract: Three kinds of selection are reviewed with primary focus on the relations between behavioral and cultural contingencies. Operant behavior is briefly examined with regard to cultural materialist theory. The functions of verbal behavior in infrastructural and superstructural practices are suggested. Discrepancies between rules promulgated in the superstructure and the requirements of the infrastructure are viewed as potentially threatening to cultural survival as metacontingencies change. Key Words: verbal behavior, cultural practices, cultural materialism, metacontingencies, kinds of selection

TL;DR: Theory-based personal attributes models of the civil rights and liberties and economics decision making of the Canadian Supreme Court justices serving from 1949-1985 are developed from Lipset and Rokkan's (1967) approach to explain mass political behavior.
Abstract: Theory-based personal attributes models of the civil rights and liberties and economics decision making of the Canadian Supreme Court justices serving from 1949-1985 are developed from Lipset and Rokkan's (1967) approach to explaining mass political behavior. The models show both behaviors to be influenced by Quebec/non-Quebec regional origins and religious affiliation, political party, being appointed by the last laissez faire Liberal Prime Minister, King, and having judicial and political experience. The models are reasonably potent, statistically. Their most important attributes capture crucial dimensions in contemporary Canadian politics, region, and party, and also have implications for the cross-national study of judicial behavior.

TL;DR: Under hypoxic conditions, CTMs of Fundulus notatus, Notropis lutrensis and Pimephales vigilax given access to the surface were significantly higher than those of conspecifics without access tothe surface, and all species had significantly lower CTMs under Hypoxic conditions than under normoxic and hyperoxic conditions.
Abstract: Critical thermal maxima (CTM) were determined for three species of fish in hypoxic (1.2 mg l-1), normoxic (7 mg l-1) and hyperoxic (12 mg l-1) oxygen tensions. All fish were acclimated to 30°C under a regulated photoperiod of 12:12. During each CTM determination, one-half of the test fish were allowed free access to the surface (to permit aquatic surface respiration) while the remaining one-half were denied access to the surface. Under hypoxic conditions, CTMs of Fundulus notatus, Notropis lutrensis and Pimephales vigilax given access to the surface were significantly higher than those of conspecifics without access to the surface. With access to the surface, all species had significantly lower CTMs under hypoxic conditions than under normoxic and hyperoxic conditions. CTMs measured under normoxic and hyperoxic conditions were not different for any of the test species. Under all comparable oxygen tensions with surface access, F. notatus had the highest CTM, N. lutrensis intermediate and P. vigilax had the lowest CTM. The critical oxygen concentration for N. lutrensis during CTM determinations occurred between 1.2 and 2 mg l-1.

TL;DR: Results suggest that AIM is internally consistent, and is significantly correlated with hypnotizability; among high hypnotizable Ss, AIM scores assess an important aspect of hypnotic experience which is relatively unrelated to behavioral response to hypnotic suggestions.
Abstract: 20 Likert-type items were derived directly from Shor's theoretical propositions concerning the occurrence of transference-like experiences among hypnotic Ss. In 3 separate experiments, this 20-item Archaic Involvement Measure (AIM) was administered to a total of 452 Ss following termination of both group and individually administered hypnosis procedures. Results suggest that: (a) AIM is internally consistent, and is significantly correlated with hypnotizability; (b) among high hypnotizable Ss, AIM scores assess an important aspect of hypnotic experience which is relatively unrelated to behavioral response to hypnotic suggestions; (c) there is no change in AIM scores associated with the sex of the hypnotist or S; and (d) there are 3 clusters of AIM items: perceived power of the hypnotist, positive emotional bond to the hypnotist, and fear of negative appraisal. Possible validational and clinical research applications of AIM are presented, along with a plea for further empirical examination of the relational dimensions of hypnosis.

Abstract: We prove that nonnegative.so1utions to a semilinear Dirichlet problem in a ball are positive, and hence radially symmetric. In particular this answers a question in [3] where positive solutions were proven to be radially symmetric. In section 4 we provide a sufficient condition on the geometry of the .domain which ensures that nonnegative solutions are positive in the interior.

TL;DR: It is concluded that calcium antagonists alone will not be useful for treatment of the primary injury of SCI, despite in vitro studies showing that the calcium antagonists can confer direct protection on stressed parenchymal cells.
Abstract: Most investigations of calcium antagonists as treatments for experimental spinal cord injury (SCI) have not demonstrated significant reduction of tissue damage or improvement in neurologic outcome. Many of these studies were prompted by reports that these agents increase blood flow to ischemic tissues. However, in vitro studies of renal and neuronal tissues subjected to an anoxic stress have shown that the calcium antagonists can confer direct protection on stressed parenchymal cells. We have used a tissue culture model of nerve cell injury to investigate whether calcium antagonists increase the probability of survival of spinal cord neurons after a defined physical trauma. Preliminary toxicity studies determined the maximum nontoxic dosages of verapamil (80 microM), nifedipine (10 microM), and chlorpromazine (10 microM) for neurons in our cultures. Preselected neurons (100-200 per study) were subjected to amputation of one primary dendrite at a distance of 100 microns from the perikaryon. Erythrosine B tests of viability conducted 24 h after lesioning failed to demonstrate that neurons injured in the presence of any one of these agents had an increased probability of survival compared to operated control neurons. Viability evaluations conducted 2 h after injury with phase contrast microscopy showed no evidence of slowed deterioration. Correction for other lesion physical parameters (lesion diameter and the extent of proximal segment retraction) also failed to reveal any increased protection by these agents. We conclude that calcium antagonists alone will not be useful for treatment of the primary injury of SCI.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the intra-industry effects of the Penn Square bank closure and concluded that the stock market reaction represents a rational investor response to new bank-specific information.
Abstract: In this paper, we use stock market data to examine the intra-industry effects of the July 5, 1982, closure of the Penn Square bank. A sample of 54 bank stocks is divided into four portfolios: industry, money center, Texas, and upstream. The latter group consists of banks that had purchased loans directly from Penn Square. Our objective is to determine whether FDIC Chairman Isaac's decision to close, rather than merge, Penn Square had an industry-wide contagion effect or a firm-specific information effect. We conclude that the stock market reaction to the Penn Square closure represents a rational investor response to new bank-specific information.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that abnormal returns earned in one year are positively related to the abnormal returns in the next year, contrary to the over-reaction investment philosophy.
Abstract: Researchers have debated stock market efficiency for years and have found several apparent anomalies, among them the overreaction investment strategy. In a sample of virtually all AMEX and NYSE stocks over twenty-one years, it is demonstrated that abnormal returns earned in one year are positively related to the abnormal returns earned in the next year. This evidence is contrary to the overreaction investment philosophy.

Abstract: Relative measurements of ${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$-Ar angular distributions in the energy range 3--20 eV have been placed on an absolute scale by both a phase-shift analysis and relative flow normalization. The two sets of absolute differential cross sections are in excellent agreement with each other over the entire energy range. These measurements are also in agreement with previous calculations and measurements in different energy and angular ranges. Total cross sections calculated from the derived phase shifts are in excellent agreement with recent direct experimental determinations.

TL;DR: Compared to published mammalian data on immunoglobulin suppression by PCBs, the earthworm immunoassay appeared to be more sensitive.
Abstract: Research is part of an effort to develop surrogate immunoassays with the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris to assess immunotoxic potential of xenobiotics to mammals. Objective was to determine if an earthworm humoral immunoassay, secretory (S) rosette formation by coelomic leukocytes, is sensitive to a known mammalian immunotoxin, the polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) Aroclor 1254®. Results are presented in terms of PCB exposure and tissue levels during uptake/depuration. Using 5-d filter paper contact exposure, LC50 and LD50 were 300 mg/cm2 and 1,140 mg/g dry mass. Nominal PCB exposure concentration of 5.0 mg/cm2 and actual tissue levels of 76 mg/g dry mass were sufficient to suppress S-rosette formation. Suppression and return of function followed PCB levels in coelomic leukocytes, the presumed site of toxicity. Compared to published mammalian data on immunoglobulin suppression by PCBs, the earthworm immunoassay appeared to be more sensitive.

TL;DR: Enzymatic activity was shown to be bicarbonate dependent and specific for cyanate as a substrate, suggesting that cyanate utilization in this organism is facilitated by an enzyme resembling cyanase (cyanate amidohydrolase; EC 3.5.5).
Abstract: Pseudomonas fluorescens NCIB 11764 was capable of utilizing cyanate (OCN-) as a sole nitrogen source for growth. Crude cell extracts from cells grown on cyanate, but not on ammonium sulfate, were induced for an enzyme catalyzing cyanate conversion to ammonia. Enzymatic activity was shown to be bicarbonate dependent and specific for cyanate as a substrate, suggesting that cyanate utilization in this organism is facilitated by an enzyme resembling cyanase (cyanate amidohydrolase; EC 3.5.5.3), as described previously in Escherichia coli and Flavobacterium sp.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the effect of time-compressed speech on comprehensive, interpretative and short-term listening and found that a statistically significant amount of the variance in comprehensive and interpretative listening scores may be explained by the manipulated variable, timecompression.
Abstract: Contemporary definitions of human listening suggest that it is a multi-dimensional phenomenon. Short-term and interpretative listening may be viewed as important aspects of the listening process. However, research in time-compressed speech has focused on listening comprehension while not adequately treating other important types of listening. A broader view of the listening process would include all of the skills considered relevant to everyday human communication. This study examined the effect of time-compressed speech on comprehensive, interpretative and short-term listening. The Kentucky Comprehensive Listening Test was used to measure the three types of listening. Cut and splice tape editing was employed in the development of four master test tapes: a control tape presented at normal rate and tapes with test stimuli time-compressed by 30%, 45%, and 60%. Each of four randomly selected groups, 120 total subjects, was exposed to one of the four test tapes. The data from the test administrations was analyzed by analysis-of-variance and simple means tests. Results indicate that a statistically significant amount of the variance in comprehensive, interpretative and short-term listening scores may be explained by the manipulated variable, time-compression. However, the amount of variance-accounted-for is relatively low for both short-term and interpretative listening. Closer examination of the data indicates that short-term and interpretative listening test scores do not significantly decay until a high level of time-compression (60%) is reached. Conversely, in the case of comprehensive listening, a relatively linear relation exists between degree of time-compression and test scores. Significant drops in mean scores were found at more moderate levels of time-compression. The findings are discussed in light of differences between short-term and long-term memory. Comprehensive listening, which relies upon long-term memory, may suffer from a lack of adequate processing and encoding time which may be induced by time-compression. Short-term and Interpretative listening are processes which rely primarily on short-term memory and may not be adversely affected until a level of time-compression is reached which impairs intelligibility. Implications are noted for future research and for educational applications.

TL;DR: Both field and laboratory studies have documented that fish bioaccumulate selenium and declines in population densities have been observed with highSelenium body burdens in fishes from some North Carolina coot in9 reserv io rs.
Abstract: Althou9h selenium is a necessary trace element (Stadtman 1979), i t has the potential to cause sublethal and lethal effects in organisms (Adams and Johnson 1981). Anthropogenic selenium enters aquatic ecosystems from the disposal of solid wastes and from burnin9 of fossil fuels, particularly coal (Gutenmann et al. 1976). Both field and laboratory studies have documented that fish bioaccumulate selenium (Adams and Johnson 1981; Sandholm et al. 1973). Declines in population densities have been observed alon9 with high selenium body burdens in fishes from some North Carolina coot in9 reserv io rs (Cumbie and VanHorn 1978; Lemly 1985).
