TL;DR: This paper examined the effect of international experience on service firms' selection of foreign markets and entry modes and found that as their experience increases and becomes geographically more diversified, service firms tend to choose markets that are culturally less similar to their home country.
Abstract: The paper examines the effect of international experience on service firms' selection of foreign markets and entry modes. The investigation utilizes survey date from 151 United States-based service firms. Results on market selection suggest that, as their experience increases and becomes geographically more diversified, service firms tend to choose markets that are culturally less similar to their home country. On entry mode choice, the paper departs from traditional linear conceptualizations and hypothesizes a U-shaped relationship between experience and propensity for integrated entry modes. Results generally support the hypothesis. The paper explains these findings and describes how service firms resemble and differ from manufacturing firms in their foreign market entry behavior.

TL;DR: Compared two methods for collecting earthworm leukocytes (coelomocytes) with respect to cell yield, viability and behaviour in immunoassays, non-invasive extrusion was more efficient than puncturing the coelomic cavity.
Abstract: We have compared two methods for collecting earthworm leukocytes (coelomocytes) with respect to cell yield, viability and behaviour in immunoassays. Non-invasive extrusion was more efficient than puncturing the coelomic cavity. Extrusion does not produce trauma to earthworms maintained under long term laboratory conditions. Neither technique modified immune assays, as determined by erythrocyte and secretory rosette formation, and phagocytosis, since all 3 were functionally equivalent. After an initial extrusion, sequential leukocyte collections by extrusion are possible at intervals of 6 weeks without affecting total and differential cell counts and rosette formation.

TL;DR: It is concluded that glycolytic power peaks within the first 15 s of high power exercise; also, aerobic metabolism responds quickly during 'anaerobic' exercise and makes a significant contribution to the work performed.
Abstract: Six men performed a total of 23 modified Wingate power tests against 5.5 kp (53.9 N) resistance on a Monark 864 ergometer. Breath-by-breath VO2 was measured using a SensorMedics 4400 metabolic cart. Peak anaerobic power (highest 5 s; mean(s.e.m.)) was 819(16) W (11.1(0.6) W kg-1) and anaerobic capacity (work in 30 s; mean(s.e.m.)) was 18.2(0.2) kJ (248(11) J kg-1). Contributions of ATP-PC, glycolytic and aerobic systems each 5 s were estimated. ATP-PC power (mean(s.e.m.)) peaked at 750(14) W (10.2(0.6) W kg-1) in the first 5 s; glycolytic power (mean(s.e.m.] peaked at 497(11) W (6.8(0.7) W kg-1) between 10 and 15 s into the test; aerobic power (mean(s.e.m.)) peaked at 157(5) W (2.1(0.3) W kg-1) during the last 5 s of the test, and VO2 exceeded 90% VO2peak Over the entire 30 s, aerobic contribution was 16%, glycolytic contribution was 56%, and ATP-PC contribution was 28%. It is concluded that glycolytic power peaks within the first 15 s of high power exercise; also, aerobic metabolism responds quickly during 'anaerobic' exercise and makes a significant contribution to the work performed.

Abstract: A general notion of conformal measure is introduced and some basic properties are studied. Sufficient conditions for the existence of these measures are obtained, using a general construction principle. The geometric properties of conformal measures relate equilibrium states and Hausdorff measures. This is shown for invariant subsets of S under expanding maps.

TL;DR: In this article, the Modified Wilson equation was found to be the better two-parameter mathematical representation with deviations between experimental and back-calculated values being on the order of ± 3% or less.
Abstract: Experimental solubilities are reported for carbazole dissolved in binary mixtures containing tetrahydropyran with n-hexane, n-heptane, clyclohexane, isooctane, n-hexadecane and t-butylcyclohexane at 25°C. Results of these measurements, along with published carbazole solubilities in ten alkane + dibutyl ether mixtures, are used to test two mathematical representations based upon the combined Nearly Ideal Binary Solvent (NIBS)/Redlich-Kister equations and Modified Wilson model. For the systems studied, the Modified Wilson equation is found to be the better two-parameter mathematical representation with deviations between experimental and back-calculated values being on the order of ± 3% or less. The NIBS/Redlich-Kister representation requires up to four adjustable “curve-fit” parameters to describe the solubility data.

TL;DR: The Euro-Barometer postmaterialist-materialist value index and two of its components are very sensitive to short-term changes in economic conditions, and failure to include a statement about unemployment in the four-item values battery accounts for much of the apparent growth of post materialist values in several countries after 1980 as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: During the past two decades a four-item battery administered in biannual Euro-Barometer surveys has been used to measure changing value priorities in Western European countries. We provide evidence that the measure is seriously flawed. Pooled cross-sectional time series analyses for the 1976–86 period reveal that the Euro-Barometer postmaterialist-materialist value index and two of its components are very sensitive to short-term changes in economic conditions, and that the failure to include a statement about unemployment in the four-item values battery accounts for much of the apparent growth of postmaterialist values in several countries after 1980. The aggregate-level findings are buttressed by analyses of panel data from three countries.

TL;DR: It is argued that fractals are more error tolerant than other structures and therefore have an evolutionary advantage.
Abstract: The architecture of the mammalian lung has been shown to be correctly described using a fractal model with a complex dimension, related to a Cantor set with random errors, for four different species. Here we provide an interpretation of that model that has implications for biological evolution. We argue that fractals are more error tolerant than other structures and therefore have an evolutionary advantage.

TL;DR: In this article, a sample of 46 bank holding companies, all listed on the New York or American stock exchanges, is divided into groups of no, low and high Brazilian exposure, and the stock market reaction to the default represents a rational investor response to new bank-specific information.
Abstract: In this paper we use stocl market data to test several hypotheses regarding possible investor reaction to the February 20, 1987 Brazilian default. Both the traditional event study approach and a generalized least squares regression, using Brazilian exposure as an explanatory variable for abnormal returns, are used. A sample of 46 bank holding companies, all listed on the New York or American srock exchanges, is divided into groups of no, low and high Brazilian exposure. We find that the initial stock market reaction to the default represents a rational investor response to new bank-specific information. However, the stock market reaction also reveals that not all relevant information was contained in the disclosure announcement. Further, we find some evidence of a contagion effect related to size.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the ability of adding limestone to Portland cement clinker and gypsum and their ability to control set characteristics of the cement and their effects upon physical properties, and it appears that in cements with higher levels of the tricalcium aluminate, positive or no effects on cement quality are noted.
Abstract: Whether or not to add limestone to Portland cement clinker and gypsum is currently being debated in many countries. Upon addition of the calcium carbonate a reaction occurs between it and the tricalcium aluminate that is present in the clinker to form calcium carboaluminates. Their ability to control set characteristics of the cement and their effects upon physical properties are discussed. It appears that in cements with higher levels of the tricalcium aluminate, positive or no effects on cement quality are noted. In cements with lower amounts of tricalcium aluminate, deleterious effects upon physical properties have been noted in some instances. It may be possible to control other properties of the cement to allow limestone additions even in cements with lower levels of tricalcium aluminate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess joint influence of sexual provocativeness and prior sexual assault on perceptions of rape victims, males and females read reports presented in a factorial design that completely crossed levels of these variables.
Abstract: To assess joint influence of sexual provocativeness and prior sexual assault on perceptions of rape victims, males and females read rape reports presented in a factorial design that completely crossed levels of these variables. Multivariate analysis of variance indicated main effects for the independent variables but no interactions. Observers attributed more blame to victims whose preassault behavior was more provocative and who had a prior rape history. Relative to males, females were generally more empathic toward victims. Observers' perceptions were discussed in terms of attributions of causal and moral responsibility for assault.

TL;DR: The results suggest that there are circadian rhythms in anaerobic power and capacity, and that there is a need to investigate these rhythms more fully in order to understand their role in human physiology.
Abstract: Anaerobic power and capacity were measured in nine college-age men at four different times of day: 03.00 h, 09.00 h, 15.00 h, and 21.00 h. Modified Wingate tests were performed against a common resistance of 5.5 kg (0.074 +/- 0.004 kg per kg body mass). Peak power was defined as the highest power output during a 5-s period in the test, and anaerobic capacity was defined as the total external work during the 30-s test. Peak power tended to differ across testing times (F = 2.50, p = .10), with the mean at 21.00 h about 8% higher (p less than .05) than at 03.00 h. Anaerobic capacity differed across the times of day (F = 9.58, p less than .01), with the means at 15.00 h and 21.00 h about 5% higher (p less than .05) than at 03.00 h and 09.00 h. These results suggest that there are circadian rhythms in anaerobic power and capacity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the question of whether governments that abuse human rights are disqualified completely from US military aid programs, and they find that human rights abuse affected the allocation of military aid in two distinct samples of countries: Western hemisphere countries; and a random sample of the world's nations, micro-states excluded.
Abstract: A relationship between US military aid and the human rights practices of potential recipient countries is mandated by law. Yet the preponderance of the results obtained in past quantitative studies seems to indicate that no such relationship exists in reality. This study focuses on the question of whether governments that abuse human rights are disqualified completely from US military aid programs. When some weaknesses of previous studies are rectified, human rights abuse is then found to have affected the allocation of military aid in two distinct samples of countries: Western hemisphere countries; and a random sample of the world's nations, micro-states excluded. Human rights abuse affected US military aid allocation during both the Carter and Reagan presidencies. The appearance of a relationship during the Reagan presidency indicates the effect endured even under an administration thought generally to have de-emphasized human rights in its foreign-policy decisions.

Abstract: The utility of salespeople’s job stress, perceived fairness, job satisfaction, thoughts of quitting, job comparison, and intention to quit for differentiating individuals who remained in the job from those who left was investigated by using a discriminant model, to anlayze data from two points in time A model that employed residualized gain scores fromn=96 salespeople, was evaluated as were separate discriminant models for both data points Change in salespeoples’ intention to quit discriminated effectively between sales force leavers and stayers Intention to quit at the second time period was useful for classifying leavers and stayers While the study design may account to some extent for the findings, these findings cast doubt upon the utility ofchanges in sales job incumbents’ job stress, job satisfaction, thoughts of quitting and job comparison predictors of voluntary turnover

TL;DR: All subjects demonstrated substantial improvements in the classroom during the teacher's absence and when distracted by other students; however, transfer of social skills did not occur to the between-class setting until students were given explicit instruction to initiate self-managing procedures in this setting.
Abstract: The instruction, maintenance, and transfer of training of social skills of 3 seriously emotionally disturbed adolescents were accomplished by a self-management training and reinforcement package. During baseline sessions these students, who were covertly filmed in their classroom, averaged over 90% off-task or socially inappropriate behavior while their teacher was out of the room. They showed similar behaviors when walking between classes, unattended by their teacher. Treatment was introduced in the classroom and consisted of social skills and self-management training and reinforcement. Treatment procedures included instruction, modeling, and role playing of social skills, as well as self-assessment, self-recording, and self-reinforcement for correct approximations of these skills. After 5 weeks of training, all subjects demonstrated substantial improvements in the classroom during the teacher's absence and when distracted by other students; however, transfer of social skills did not occur to the between-class setting until students were given explicit instruction to initiate self-managing procedures in this setting.

TL;DR: In this article, three explanatory models of defensiveness in sex offenders are explored: the pathogenic model, the adaptive model, and thecriminogenic model which assumes that the sex offender is faced with a highly adversarial setting and chooses to defend itself based on its expected utility.
Abstract: Defensiveness in sex offenders (DISO), although a very common phenomenon, is poorly understood by clinicians. Three explanatory models of DISO are explored. Thepathogenic model postulates from a psychodynamic perspective massive repression and denial are operative in the service of ego functions. Thecriminogenic model associates deception with the antisocial characteristics of sex offenders. Theadaptational model assumes that the sex offender is faced with a highly adversarial setting and chooses defensiveness based on its expected utility. Models of malingering are compared and implications of DISO for clinical treatment and management are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine several event-study test statistics that can be used to detect abnormal performance during amultiperiod event window, and demonstrate that one of the most commonly used test statistics does not, under the assumptions made, have the distribution claimed (standard normal), and thus tests using it will be biased.
Abstract: We examine several event-study test statistics that can be used to detect abnormal performance during amultiperiod event window. We demonstrate that one of the most commonly used test statistics does not, under the assumptions made, have the distribution claimed (standard normal), and thus tests using it will be biased. The magnitude of that bias is shown to increase with the length of the event window and can generally be expected to lead to excessive rejection of the null hypothesis. We also compare the relative power of alternative test statistics that are normally distributed and are straightforward to apply.

TL;DR: Detailed restriction and nucleotide sequence analysis of the Pseudomonas putida TOL plasmid pDK1 xylE gene revealed significant homology with isofunctionalxylE and nahH genes from the TOL pWW0 and NAH7 plasmids, and the possibility that xylEpWW0 may represent a genetic hybrid of xyl EpDK1 and n NahH is discussed.
Abstract: Detailed restriction and nucleotide sequence analysis of the Pseudomonas putida TOL plasmid pDK1 xylE gene revealed significant homology with isofunctional xylE (81.5%) and nahH (78.0%) genes from the TOL pWW0 and NAH7 plasmids. The highest degrees of nucleotide and apparent amino acid conservation (82.2 and 86.4%, respectively) among all three genes were found to exist within a region comprising 264 nucleotides encoding the C terminus. A comparison of localized regions revealed significantly greater homology between xylEpWW0 and xylEpDK1 within the C-terminal region, whereas xylEpWW0 and nahH showed greater similarity at the N terminus. The possibility that xylEpWW0 may represent a genetic hybrid of xylEpDK1 and nahH is discussed.

TL;DR: A course taught in the College of Business and Administration at Drexel University in which students undertake real-world projects in an inner-city neighborhood, which encourages students to bring to bear a variety of traditional and nontraditional techniques from many disciplines.
Abstract: This paper describes a course taught in the College of Business and Administration at Drexel University in which students undertake real-world projects in an inner-city neighborhood. The course is an elective for students who have been exposed to the traditional techniques for problem solving in such courses as management science, operational research, statistics, organizational behavior, marketing, and economics. They address such public sector problems as people moving, traffic flow, trash removal, market promotion, and surveys. Typically, the students discover that these problems are complex and have many stakeholders with competing interests, so that they do not fit neatly into one of the problem types encountered in traditional course work. Thus, the students are encouraged to bring to bear a variety of traditional and nontraditional techniques from many disciplines. The work on large-scale problems is pursued in directed project teams that simultaneously offer the students a unique learning experience and real service to the community.

TL;DR: It is shown here that this axiom is not valid in the canonical frame for KM, answering a question first posed in the Lemmon-Scott manuscript [Lemmon, 1966], and has been of historical importance in the development of the authors' understanding of intensional model theory.
Abstract: The logic KM is the smallest normal modal logic that includes the McKinsey axiomIt is shown here that this axiom is not valid in the canonical frame for KM, answering a question first posed in the Lemmon-Scott manuscript [Lemmon, 1966].The result is not just an esoteric counterexample: apart from interest generated by the long delay in a solution being found, the problem has been of historical importance in the development of our understanding of intensional model theory, and is of some conceptual significance, as will now be explained. The relational semantics for normal modal logics first appeared in [Kripke, 1963], where a number of well-known systems were shown to be characterised by simple first-order conditions on binary relations (frames). This phenomenon was systematically investigated in [Lemmon, 1966], which introduced the technique of associating with each logic L a canonical frame which invalidates every nontheorem of L. If, in addition, each L-theorem is valid in , then L is said to be canonical. The problem of showing that L is determined by some validating condition C, meaning that the L-theorems are precisely those formulae valid in all frames satisfying C, can be solved by showing that satisfies C—in which case canonicity is also established. Numerous cases were studied, leading to the definition of a first-order condition Cφ associated with each formula φ of the formwhere Ψ is a positive modal formula.
