Abstract: In this study, which is concerned with the varying degrees of sexual dimorphism of stature between human societies, adult male and female height measurements and male-female height ratios – the measure of sexual dimorphism – from 216 societies are statistically compared with several variables: marriage practices, protein availability, the presence of milking herds, settlement size, and climate. Our results indicate that while greater mean male height is associated with polygynous marriage, marriage practices did not exert an influence on the degree of sexual dimorphism of stature. On the other hand, the results suggest that while sexual dimorphism in height has a strong genetic component, dietary factors can influence the degree of dimorphism.

Abstract: The authors explored the overall effectiveness of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) approaches through a meta-analytic review of 52 controlled outcome studies between 1995 and 2010. Hierarchical linear modeling techniques estimated a statistically significant moderate treatment effect size (.47) for CCPT, as well as statistically significant relationships between effect size and study characteristics, including child's age, child's ethnicity, caregiver involvement, treatment integrity, publication status, and presenting issue.

Abstract: Interfacial stability of electroplated copper on a 5nm ruthenium film supported by silicon, Cu∕(5nmRu)∕Si, was investigated using Rutherford backscattering and high-resolution analytical electron microscopy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging shows that a 5nm Ru film is amorphous in contrast to the columnar microstructures of thicker films (20nm). Direct Cu plating on a 5nm Ru film yielded a homogeneous Cu film with over 90% plating efficiency. It is demonstrated that 5nm Ru can function as a directly plateable Cu diffusion barrier up to at least 300°C vacuum anneal. TEM reveals an interlayer between Ru∕Si, which expands at the expense of Ru upon annealing. Electron energy loss spectroscopy analyses show no oxygen (O) across the Cu∕(5nmRu)∕Si interfaces, thereby indicating that the interlayer is ruthenium silicide (RuxSiy). This silicidation is mainly attributed to the failure of the ultrathin Ru barrier at the higher annealing temperature.

Abstract: The site of Dmanisi in the Eurasian republic of Georgia has yielded striking hominin, faunal and archaeological material as evidence for the presence of early Homo outside Africa 1.77 million years ago, documenting an important episode in human evolution. Here we describe a beautifully preserved skull and jawbone from a Dmanisi hominin of this period who had lost all but one tooth several years before death. This specimen not only represents the earliest case of severe masticatory impairment in the hominin fossil record to be discovered so far, but also raises questions about alternative subsistence strategies in early Homo.

Abstract: We consider subshifts of finite type on the symbolic space generated by incidence matrices over a countably infinite alphabet. We extend the definition of topological pressure to this context and, as our main result, we construct a new class of Gibbs states of Holder continuous potentials on these symbol spaces. We establish some basic stochastic properties of these Gibbs states: exponential decay of correlations, central limit theorem and an a.s. invariance principle. This is accomplished via detailed studies of the associated Perron-Frobenius operator and its conjugate operator.
